WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

House Party is a thought-provoking new drama about a friendship group forced to address their trust issues, betrayals and unresolved tension after one of their friend’s is murdered at an annual New Year’s Eve party. The story switches from present day interrogations to what happened before the party and everything in between. Each episode reveals new secrets along with the lies they’re willing to tell in order to protect themselves. And no one is completely innocent…

The victim, Malachi (Emmanuel Okeowo), is never shown in any sort of positive light and comes off as somewhat of manipulator, making every one of his friends a potential suspect. As the series goes on it’s impossible to pinpoint who the killer might be and I found myself going back and forth on my own guesses. In fact, up until the final moment I still had no clue. The ending was definitely a shock, but a satisfying one. The series as a whole was full of twists I never saw coming and kept me entertained through every episode.

The surprise at the end of the second episode “Let’s Talk About This” actually made me gasp, as I wasn’t expecting it at all. The way they revealed it was extremely effective, choosing to expose the secret with a visual rather than simply throw it in the dialogue. There’s also an amazing scene in the finale where an argument between the five friends breaks out at the top of the stairs. For a second, I thought whoever killed Malachi was going to do so then and they were all in cahoots to cover it up, but the actual person behind it is much more surprising than that. The finale leaves you with more questions than answers and I’m impatiently awaiting a season two, so I get to know more.

Each episode is accompanied by a behind the scenes video, cleverly titled “The After Party,” where the cast and crew share their thoughts on the episode and their characters. I thought that was a unique touch and makes the whole thing feel more personal. It was also a great way to learn more about the series and those involved in its creation. I’d recommend giving these short videos a watch too, either after each respective episode or once you finish the series.

If you’re a fan of mysteries, drama in general or you just love a good web series, I absolutely recommend House Party. The ensemble cast (Derek Oppong, Sharon Oji, Tomi Sunmonu and Chae-Jamal McFarlane) was perfect and by the end of it all you’ll definitely be wishing there were more.
