Web Series Wednesday – It’s Complicated
By: Michelle Rose Micor
What? It’s Complicated.
Who? Written and directed by Cheska Bacaltos. Starring: Devin Drain, Jordan Mitchell Love and Samantha Gabrielsen.
Why Should I Watch? Two childhood best friends, turned lovers, turned ex’s, still living together. Sound complicated enough? Well it gets even better.
The series starts with Skye, played by the amazing Devin Drain, coming home after a one-night stand with her coworker Alex (Samantha Gabrielsen). Filled with confusion and a little fear, Skye turns to her best friend/ex, Lance (Jordan Mitchell Love) for advice. At first, he gives her the run-of-the-mill, “Wait for him to reach out,” shpeal, but when Skye reveals that her one-night stand was with a girl, Lance turns on his feet and redirects his attention to his BFF.
We don’t want to spoil too much, but Lance basically gives Skye the best reaction she could have possibly hoped for. While most would have probably fixated on the fact that Alex is a girl, Lance simply brushes it off and ask the more important question, “Did you like it?”
Drain and Love bring an amazing rapport to screen as childhood best friends. You can see the history between Skye and Lance and how easily Bacalto’s words are brought to life through them. Fun fact, Love and Drain are actually good friends in real life!
The writing from Bacalto is nothing short of what makes up a great web series. It’s quick, lighthearted and funny, but serious when it needs to be. Plus, she uses Harry Potter and Star Wars references when discussing private parts!
What really makes the series worth watching though is the way Skye is written, in her journey to finding who she is and where she falls on the Kinsey scale. She’s clearly uptight and way too put together for someone in her 20’s (she labels the orange juices in the fridge), while her roommate is a bit more easy-going, especially when it comes to labels. As Lance best put it, “Fuck labels, get laid.”
The stars of the series are adorable and absolutely relatable. Lance is the sometimes annoying but super supportive best friend, Skye reminds us of a young Spencer Carlin from South of Nowhere and her one-night stand Alex? She’s cute, she’s smart and clearly has a thing for Skye.
