WHY SHOULD I WATCH?
I’ve covered dozens of web series for “Web Series Wednesday,” but I’ve yet to find many animated shows that entertain me as much as their live action counterparts. At least that was the case, before I came across Multiplex 10: The Web Series. The series picks up where an animated short of the same name leaves off, following pseudo friends and co-workers Jason (Gordon McAlpin) and Kurt (Tom Brazelton) as they try to stay sane while working at the local movie theater. Jason is a film snob who hates remakes, clichés and won’t even torrent films as it takes away from the intended viewing experience. Kurt is a horror buff who probably has a DVR full of sci-fi movies just waiting to be enjoyed. Their tastes clash, but they find a way to reach common ground…sometimes.
As an avid movie watcher myself, the back and forth between the Multiplex staff and the occasional customer is spot on and hilarious. The unwritten rules of when it’s appropriate to discuss spoilers, ranging from when the movie is out of the theater to literally never, made “Don’t Spoil the Endgame” one of the best episodes of the series. Spoilers are such a huge part of the movie watching experience these days, especially with the way fans go wild with theories and analysis after the fact on social media, that I loved seeing Kurt and Jason struggle to find a place where they could discuss the movie in peace. Enough with the Last Jedi shone just as bright for similar reasons! In the same vein as spoiler discussion, movie lovers can go too far when it comes to their hot takes and overall reviews. Jason couldn’t bear to hear another word about the Star Wars film and I never related more; after about the first month seeing anyone still discussing blockbusters in great length, the constant debates get old fast.
Multiplex 10: The Web Series also boasts an accompanying movie review series, “Multiplex 10: Movie Minutes,” typically from Jason and Kurt and spoiler free. And the web series was originally a comic strip, which can be found on the series’ website. The Multiplex 10 universe is clearly McAlpin’s baby and his continued passion for the project is what makes it so widely successful. From the full animated short to the upcoming episodes currently being produced, Multiplex 10: The Web Series is absolutely worth checking out in its entirety.
