WHAT? Poor Us

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Poor Us is a brand new LGBTQ web series that follows two fraternal brothers, Tanner (Jeremy Dozier) and Max (Matthew Bunker), as they try to rebuild their lives after being cut off by their father. Described as “Broad City meets Schitt’s Creek, but gayer,” I went into the series excited to see what it had to offer. And I wasn’t disappointed. The comparison is so spot on as the series is ridiculous, hilarious, and leaves you wanting more.

Dozier created the series out of need for representation in Hollywood. As a plus sized actor he wasn’t getting any opportunities to play confident or powerful roles because they just weren’t out there for people like him. Bigger characters are typically relegated to no name bit parts or their roles center around their weight and their weight alone and Dozier longed for something more. Tanner is a role he can really sink his teeth into, pushing boundaries by being unapologetically sexy, seen and maybe a little bit arrogant. He’s so bad that he’s good. His character is the highlight of the series and the back and forth between him and Bunker make Tanner shine that much brighter.

The dark comedy Poor Us comedy is definitely worth the watch. There’s something there for everyone and those who want representation, just like Dozier, get it tenfold. Each episode is under ten minutes long, making it a perfect candidate for a binge watch. The only downside to Poor Us is there wasn’t enough. The seventh episode of the series was recently released and episodes come out weekly on Tuesdays. Dozier’s made a forever fan in me and likely any and everyone who gives this series a chance.
