WHAT? Stay Indie

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Stay Indie is a mockumentary sitcom about a struggling actor desperate to make a name for himself. Indie Andy (Bryce Taylor) is a complete nobody, but he has big dreams of becoming a huge star and decides to take matters into his own hands to try and reach his goal. After he fails to find success in mainstream film and commercial work, Andy decides to go the independent route and pave his own way to fame and fortune. Turning his own life into a documentary series isn’t as easy as it seems, and Andy ends up getting himself in some real messes along the way.

I knew I was going to be a fan of this series from the first episode when they cleverly slipped a not-so-subtle N’sync and Backstreet Boys reference into conversation. When Andy mistook a jar labeled with an “R” thinking it was a rainy-day fund rather than the rent payment, I was sold. Stay Indie has the perfect amount of pop culture references mixed with film industry realness, and ridiculousness all the way through.

Taylor does an amazing job of making Andy extremely likable. He’s a total doofus and it’s a miracle his roommate Kyle (Rob Merritt) doesn’t kill him, but it’s hard not to root for him. The two make quite the pair, polar opposites in every way, and the actors play off each other perfectly. Kyle is the practical and responsible one while Andy constantly has his head in the clouds. Andy’s manager Jeff (Emille Lacsa) is nearly as out there as Andy, with sprinklings of Tom Haverford charm. He eats noodles out of wine glasses, because he’s classy like that and manages to be somewhat competent in his job. At the very least, he gets Andy some work.

This brand-new comedy can appeal to that little part in all of us who would secretly love to be famous. Andy reminds me of so many performers I’ve met in my personal life, in the best way. He’s a dreamer who isn’t afraid to go after what he wants, no matter how misguided his plans are. Any budding artist or fans of realistic portrayals of celebrity hopefuls will definitely enjoy giving Indie Andy a watch. And if you just like comedies, give this sweet Iowa based series a look.
