Web Series Wednesday – The Filth

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?
The Filth is a brand-new LGBT web show that’s real, raw and absolutely worth the watch. The series follows two best friends, emotionally unavailable Stella (Paige Hoffman) and hopeless romantic Max (Jake Delaney), through the trials and tribulations of life as artists in Los Angeles. Between their career goals and their love lives, nothing ever comes easy, but at least they have each other to lean on. They’re messy, they’re filthy and they’re trying their best.
The Filth is one of the most diverse web series I’ve had the pleasure of watching with multiple queer identifying characters, as well as characters of different racial backgrounds and body types. It’s a true representation of the city and every single person is someone you could see running into in real life. They’re weird, they’re dramatic, they’re artsy and every second of it is believable. Stella and Max are the perfect mix of ridiculous and obnoxious – exactly the way two best friends should be. When Stella had to clear up Max’s confusion about the possible demise of JLo I couldn’t stop laughing. The script lends itself well to these hilarious bits, adding an amazing element of comedy to a show that’s so honest and tells stories you don’t see very often. Sometimes web shows make an attempt at humor and it falls flat. That’s not the case here at all. The writers have serious experience with comedy and it shows as they’ve got the timing and the material down easy.
There are five episodes in the series’ first season, each coming in at about twenty-five minutes long, but I honestly needed more. The stories are so rich and the characters are so engaging that I didn’t want the season to end. The production value is outstanding, it’s shot beautifully and the entire cast and crew should be proud of what they’ve created. It’s phenomenal. And so relatable. In fact, I consider myself a Max, having periodic breakdowns about my future in the most dramatic way possible, usually while singing.
The performances from Hoffman, Delaney and the rest of the ensemble cast (Katrina Kemp, Lauren Holt, Jay Lee, Nican Robinson and Alexandria McGaughey) are absolutely amazing. And there are iconic guest starring performances, most notably Cassie Scerbo preparing for an audition and Max Adler letting his emotions get the best of him.
I’ve tried to narrow down the thing that stands out the most, but it’s so strong all around that I can’t pick out just one thing. This is a series that everybody should be watching.
