WHAT? This Is Taylor

BY: UnsolicitedProject and The Gay Women Channel. Directed by Sarah Rotella and written by Adrianna DiLonardo and Sarah Rotella.

WHO?

This series follows the journey of self-discovery of a college female, Taylor (played by Justine Nelson), as she learns more about her own sexual identity and the lesbian dating world at large.

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

If you have ever gone through your own struggle to come to terms with your sexual identity, then this series will serve as a walk down memory lane. It certainly did for me. An innocent game of “Would You Rather” awakens Taylor to realize that she is attracted to women and wants to date them. I say “them” because for much of the series Taylor is waffling between dating Madison (the always beguiling and never disappointing Gwenlyn Cumyn) or playing the field.  Through it all Taylor has her roommate and best friend Kelsey (played by Felicia Simone) by her side.

Kelsey’s support and acceptance of Taylor is unwavering and a non-issue throughout the series. This series was originally released on SnapChat, which is fitting because the story is also told through the use of SnapChats. By integrating the social mediums of Facebook messenger and SnapChats in the storytelling process, Adrianna DiLonardo and Sarah Rotella provide a fresh take on modern day storytelling.

In the words of Shakespeare, “The course of true love never did run smoothly,” and Taylor’s love life is no exception. Once I started watching this series I couldn’t stop. It was midnight and I had work early in the morning yet still I had to keep watching to find out what happened next. Hopefully, This Is Taylor will be back for a second season. It was such a joy to watch Justine Nelson, Felicia Simone, Gwenlyn Cumyn and Winny Clarke bring these characters to life. I loved the chemistry between everyone. I loved being able to identify with the quandary of “am I on a date or am I just hanging out with a friend” and the urgency to buy a new outfit for the next time you see the girl of your affection and still not knowing if it is a friend outing or a date. The writers and actors executed these hilarious and realistic moments perfectly.
