WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Wingmen is a brand-new spinoff of BET’s original web show “Situationships.” While the series’ sister show focuses on the relationships of its largely female cast, Wingmen highlights the male perspective of millennial dating.

The series stars writer and creator Kar Logan as the resident playboy and quintessential wingman Theo, who often gives his friends unsolicited and occasionally horrible dating advice. Sometimes he elicits eyerolls and other times he’s surprisingly sweet, but he has enough smarmy charm to make you root for him. Theo is also humanized by a handful of fun and relatable characters in the show, most notably married man Jason (Darius Churchman) and bartender Fatima (Keanna Swindell) – two of the standouts in the series.

Wingmen’s six-episode first season is a joy to watch, with each episode being better than the last. Each relationship obstacle is discussed in a believable way, being both humorous and accurate to real world dating. The fifth episode, “King of Cups,” was especially poignant. Theo and Jason come to the rescue of a young woman, Jay (Eve Newman), being assaulted by her boyfriend and take her to their regular hang out spot. When it’s revealed she’s a trans woman a raw discussion about the mistreatment of women, transphobia and accountability follows and the bar patrons end up tapping into feelings in a way they hadn’t in the previous episodes. It’s a very important discussion you don’t often see and Newman’s character leading the talk was a welcomed choice.

It’s a true sitcom where most of the action takes place at the character’s local bar and the episodes are full of both laughs and love. Comedy fans, millennials in the dating world and especially fellow black creators will have a lot to like in this one. They’ve already teased a Season Two coming soon, so now’s the perfect time to get into this series.
