Will Gittens – Missin You
By: Karen Steinberg
Q) Your music is often described as “R&B,” but how would you describe it?
A) My music is a combination of my experiences. It’s versatile, so just labeling it as R&B doesn’t do justice to the type of artist I am. It’s multifaceted, with elements of acoustic pop and Afro Island, among other sounds.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Prince, Stevie Wonder, John Mayer and John Legend.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Missin You.”
A) A love interest and I decided not to pursue each other anymore. After a few weeks, I found myself missing her, so I wrote the song.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) The hypnotizing melody in the hook and the relatability of the lyrics.
Q) You have a visualizer for the song out now. Are you able to tease if there will be a full video coming out soon and what the imagery will provoke?
A) We just wanted to create aesthetically pleasing visuals to accompany the song instead of creating a traditional music video for this track.
Q) What is your songwriting process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) No, I usually start a song acoustically, just me and my guitar.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I’m generally involved in the composition of all my music, but I lightly contribute to the actual production. My brother is my main producer and we’ve developed a seamless chemistry over the years. It’s so locked in that it’s like I’m doing it myself.
Q) With “Missin You” out now, is this a prelude to a full album or an EP in the near future?
A) Yes, it’s a single from an upcoming album, Afro Island 2 (a follow up to Afro Island that’s out now) dropping later this year.
Q) You are headed to the Music Bash Tulum. What can attendees expect from a live Will Gittens performance?
A) Soulful vocals, sensual acoustic vibes and a good time.
Q) At the event, you will be sharing a stage with Eric Bellinger, Sevyn Streeter, DJ Whoo Kid, Marc E. Bassy, and Natalie LaROSE. Are you looking forward to meeting anyone in particular?
A) I already know Eric and Sevyn personally, but I’m looking forward to meeting everyone else.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) No one in particular right now.
Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to, and why do you dig them?
A) Mostly, I listen to the music created by my production company. My brother JR is dropping a fire project soon, and I’ve been listening to his newest single, “Don’t Facetime Me Crying,” a lot lately.
Q) You are active on social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It’s always been a great tool to help me grow into the artist I’ve always wanted to be independently.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you for continuing to support me. I have my best music ahead of me, and I’m really excited about everything I’m creating, so stay tuned.
