YARLIE – Stupid with a Sore Heart
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Pop music made for cry dancing, wrapped inside of analogue synthesizers and pounding 808’s.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I like to find inspiration from a wide range of genres and artists, everything between Bessie Smith and Danny L Harle. The last couple of months I’ve listened to a lot of 90s pop music, Atomic Kitten, Melanie C and S Club 7 to mention a few.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “OK.”
A) “OK” started out as a text message to my ex, saying “Don’t let me think we’re broken if we’re OK,” which ended up being the theme of the whole song as well as the lyrics for the chorus.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I do believe the lyrics to be easy to relate and connect to, we’ve all been there at some point. “Talking ’bout the things we swore we’d never ever so,” promising each other forever but in the end not being able to keep that promise.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes the lyrics comes to me first, and from that I start working with the production. Sometimes I find chords that just speaks to me, and the production and the lyrics gets born out of those chords. And sometimes I start with the production, maybe find some synthesizers preset I like and let that be the start.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I’ve produced all of my songs together with my co-producer Zakarias Lekberg and it’s really a 50/50 teamwork.
Q) What are some themes you explore on your new EP Stupid with a Sore Heart?
A) Heartbreak, sexuality and identity.
Q) What tracks on the EP hold a special place in your heart and what makes them standout to you?
A) Oh, I must say all of them. They all have a special place in my sore lil’ heart.
One track I am extra happy about being a part of the EP is “thinking_no_im_not_demo_1.4” since I created it one day before the entire EP was supposed to go through mastering. I didn’t create it for the EP, but when I listened to it, I just realized it needed to be a part of the EP, even though it was still just a demo. I needed it to be a part of the EP because in the end it became a summary of all of the other tracks.
Q) What songs challenged you the most creatively?
A) The biggest, and most creative, challenges for the EP was finding the right soundscapes for “Blush” and “OK.”
Q) How did you shake off a long day in the studio when recording the EP?
A) Actually, I tend to shake of my long days by going to the studio. Me and my co-producer has a really nice workflow, so you never really feel the need of shaking those days off. Sometimes we’ve been in need of some more hours of sleep, but other than that creating the EP was an absolute blast.
Q) What do you hope listeners take away from Stupid with a Sore Heart?
A) That it’s ok and important to feel all feelings, to be a crybaby every now and then, and to know that we’ve all been there. Whatever it is you’re going through – it will hurt, it will be a struggle. But you will rise again.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) For me, right now, my favorite place to perform is in my hometown, Luleå, in the North of Sweden. I cannot describe the feeling of feeling home at stage and feeling home at place at the very same time. With that being said, I can’t wait to when I’ll be able to go overseas to perform.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Francis and the Lights, Danny L Harle or Robyn.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I really appreciate being able to expand your vision and your ID from not only being about the music but also the visual expression through pictures and videos.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) ILY 💖💘☁️☁️
