Younger – A Book Fair to Remember
By: Taylor Gates
Liza (Sutton Foster) packs for the Hamptons, stressing about her relationship with Josh (Nico Tortorella). She feels like she has to end it, as he wants kids and she doesn’t. Maggie (Debi Mazar) tells her to clear her head during the trip and leave her drama in the city.
When Liza and Kelsey (Hilary Duff) arrive, they make a game plan. They need to focus on their social media game and make the most out of being at the book fair. Liza runs into Emily (Fiona Robert), who is covering the fair for EW. However, she’s also shopping around her own novel—a self-help book from the point of view of her dog, Pearl.
Colin (Jay Wilkison) talks to Kelsey after one of his many panels. He asks her to join him at his party the next night. Kelsey has to decline the invitation, as it’s the same time as Millennial’s celebration. Pippa (Lindsey Broad) is anxious to give away Kelsey’s spot since his event is hot ticket, but Colin tells her to hold off.
Liza and Diana (Miriam Shor) walk around the fair. Diana criticizes a photography book that claims to be full of “real women over 40.” Models aren’t real, she says: cellulite is. The photographer, Amy (Susan Blackwell), assures her that everyone in that book is her friend, and some have even had children.
Liza and Charles (Peter Hermann) run into each other outside the hotel. Liza is in a bikini heading to the beach; Charles is casually dressed in shorts going to play golf. Liza joins Kelsey who is already on her third frozen rosé of the day. She admits the day drinking has to do with the stress of Random House’s party being at the same time as theirs. With Colin’s book, their party is going to be more popular.
Emily flops onto a beach chair next to them. Liza invites her to their party, and she accepts the invitation. Emily apologizes if the EW article made things complicated with Colin; she wanted to write more about Millennial, but Liza didn’t have much of an internet presence to go off. Kelsey and Liza agree she doesn’t do much social media, but Emily ominously says she does if one were to look really, really hard. Liza announces she wants a rosé after all. Kelsey goes to fetch her one, leaving Liza and Emily alone. Emily tells Liza she knows her secret, but she tells her not to worry. She won’t expose her to anyone or write about her in EW—if Millennial publishes her book, that is.
Charles meets Liza and Kelsey in the hotel lobby, announcing John Irving—an old friend of his dad’s—is going to stop by the Millennial party that night. Kelsey agrees that Irving is amazing, but he’s not sure an appearance by him is on-brand for their imprint. Liza agrees, taking the opportunity to tell her about Emily’s Labradoodle book. Kelsey laughs at the thought, turning it down despite Liza’s pleading.
Richard (Mather Zickel) sexts Diana as she’s getting ready for bed and Diana panics, not knowing how to handle it. The next day, she pays a visit to Amy asking if she does commissions.
Josh and Maggie grab coffee. Josh asks Maggie if Liza knows how much he loves her. Maggie tells her she does, but she also admits that Liza knows having a family is going to be important to Josh. Josh says he thinks Liza is the one; he doesn’t want to lose her.
Amy leads Diana out to a beach, telling her to get nude for the pictures. She says Diana shouldn’t do it for Richard—she should do it for herself. The beach is always secluded, and in twenty years she’s going to look back and wish she still had her body. Amy goes to get some salt water for Diana’s hair and two kids looking for Pokemon walk up to a naked Diana. Amy returns and shoos them away, but the wind blows Diana’s dress into the ocean.
Liza asks Kelsey if she got her email with all the dog facts. Kelsey confirms she did, but she’s still not keen on publishing Emily’s book. Kelsey is upset that Colin’s party is blowing up on social media; she hates feeling like she’s competing with him.
Colin sneaks out of his party to visit Kelsey and Liza tells them to go spend some time together. She uses this opportunity to announce to everyone that Emily Burns is Millennial’s newest author.
Liza and Charles run into each other outside an ice cream shop. Charles informs her he used to scoop ice cream there, but Liza can’t picture him as a kid. Charles says he used to sneak into the bar across the street through the backdoor. Liza spies a sign outside that says Berlin is playing there. She loves the band and Charles does too so they decide to go to the concert together.
Diana video chats with Richard, telling him about her crazy photo shoot. Richard says he cut himself trying to shave a certain personal area, as he wanted to send her a picture too. Diana says their love wasn’t made for modern technology and her choice of words surprises him.
Charles and Liza have a great time at the concert. They even slow dance during “Take My Breath Away” and exchange memories about the song. Charles walks her back to her room and they start making out. Josh comes out from Liza’s room and sees them, sadly and wordlessly slipping away before Liza realizes he’s there. Liza tells Charles kissing him feels good, but she needs to figure things out with Josh first. Liza walks into her room and sees the words “Marry Me” spelled out with red rose petals on her bed.
