Younger – Pigeons, Parrots and Storks
By: Taylor Gates
Liza (Sutton Foster) and Josh (Nico Tortorella) attend a Paris Review party with Kelsey (Hilary Duff) and Colin (Jay Wilkison). Now that Colin has sold his book for over a million dollars, they finally want to publish one of his short stories. Colin introduces Kelsey to his editor, Pippa (Lindsey Broad), who Kelsey used to intern with. Pippa invites Kelsey on a lunch date.
Colin feels a little overwhelmed with all the attention he’s getting and changes the subject to Liza’s recent tattoo. Another guy at the party yells at Colin—Random House isn’t buying any more fiction that year since they spent all their money on him. Josh tries to diffuse the situation, but punches start flying anyway. Liza cleans up Josh’s scratches and he reminisces that he hasn’t been in a fight since high school. Liza teases him saying she weighs more than his opponent did. This turns into a make out session and the two exchange “I love you’s.”
Liza panics when Maggie (Debi Mazar) gets back from the gym the next morning. Thinking it was a rubber band, she has been using Liza’s NuvaRing as a hair tie for the past week, meaning Liza and Josh haven’t had any protection for awhile. Josh goes out to get a pregnancy test while Liza stresses to Maggie—she can’t handle the clock resetting to zero and she really doesn’t want to raise another kid. Josh returns with a fancy digital test where the results are sent to your phone. The three of them pass the time by watching cute puppy and kitten videos and Liza is relieved to find out she’s not pregnant. Josh, however, is a little disappointed.
Liza Facetimes Caitlin (Tessa Albertson), reminding her to have safe sex. Maggie yells that she’s happy to provide more condoms, but Caitlin promises she’s covered. Once Caitlin is off video chat, she pulls down the covers and keeps cuddling with the boy hiding in her bed.
Diana (Miriam Shor) and Richard (Mather Zickel) have a nice breakfast, but Diana is still uncomfortable lending him her house key for the day.
Kelsey asks Charles (Peter Hermann) for Millennial’s permission to appear at more book fairs and literary festivals, as they need to make their presence known. Charles harshly reminds them of their mistake with Colin’s book, saying he doesn’t think they need a weekend of partying and overpriced hotels.
Diana invites everyone to bring a date to the latest event honoring P is for Pigeon. She also tells Charles she regrettably won’t be able to accompany him to this event as she has a new boyfriend. Charles says he looks forward to meeting her new beau, replying that he too will be bringing a plus one. At the function, Diana vocally judges everyone, which Richard takes as a sign of keeping people at arm’s length. Kelsey shows Liza and Josh an article on Page Six about the Paris Review party.
Charles and Diana introduce their dates to each other. Charles has brought his daughter, Nicole (Delphina Belle), who is an avid bird watcher. Diana tries to bond with her to impress Richard, but Nicole immediately runs to Liza instead.
Josh draws a bird tattoo onto a delighted Nicole’s arm. Colin calls Kelsey, frantically telling her how many notes his editor has given him on his novel. He doubts himself, thinking he should return the advance, and Kelsey rushes to calm him down.
Richard comments on how good Josh is with children and Diana tells him not to put idea into his and Liza’s head—she finally found a decent assistant. Richard agrees, saying that since they’re young they have all the time in the world to start a family.
Colin freaks out, wondering if his book is actually garbage. Kelsey tells him every talented writer feels the same way, explaining that no editor actually expects an author to make every single change they suggest. She helps him read the comments and work through everything.
The P is for Pigeon author gives Diana a thank you gift of a live parrot. In her speech, she also thanks her husband for pushing her to think outside the box.
Diana calls the parrot rescue to pick up her new pet. She knows how much of a commitment a pet is and she doesn’t want that kind of work. Richard doesn’t understand, as they could raise the parrot together. Richard says Diana is a beautiful, talented woman who has put up a wall around herself.
At work, Diana hands Liza her house key, telling her to make a copy for Richard and start making appointments with her closet decorators. Richard is officially moving in.
Pippa and Kelsey have lunch and Pippa rips into Kelsey for helping Colin so much with his book draft. She’s the editor, not Kelsey—her job is hard enough without other people’s opinions clouding the book. Pippa apologizes for her bluntness, but felt like she had to get things off her chest before the Hampton book fair. She already booked Colin for a few panels and assumed Millennial would be there too.
Kelsey storms into Charles’ office, announcing she’s going to the Hamptons whether the company pays for it or not. It’s not about the partying; it’s about visibility. Charles easily agrees to let her go, telling her to show everyone Empirical is still in the game.
Josh walks Liza home, bringing up the possibility of having kids again. He hasn’t been able to stop thinking about how good they would be as parents and it’s not unusual for older women to have babies anymore. Liza; however, is still hesitant.
A crowd is gathering around to watch the sun go down, as it is a rare evening where the sunset lines up exactly with the skyscrapers. Josh tells Liza it’s a sign—they met at the perfect time and can have everything they want. Liza agrees that it is beautiful.
