Interviews
Zoe Ko – Kiss My (Ah)
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Raw, unapologetic, c*nty and in your face! The songs are covered in guitar riffs, drums you could strut to and catchy 2000’s melodies.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Pretty much every female rock and pop star from the 2000’s!! Gwen Stefani is a huge inspiration to me. And other icons like Lady Gaga and Britney Spears but other genres and influences always called to me too like Indie Sleaze and LCD Soundsystem.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Kiss My (Ah).”
A) I briefly talked about the tea in my high school growing up in my song “Baby Teeth,” but never fully said my final piece on the situation. So, going into writing this song I knew with the attitude growing up in New York City instilled in me and saying my final piece to my mean girl “Kiss My (Ah)” was the right phrase and sass and clap back.
Q) This song is such a banger! What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) It’s fun and confident and is a reminder to be the baddie that you are. Life’s too short to not be a baddie.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) I wanted the music video to embody the energy and mindset the song has! I always knew it had to have the “Kiss My (Ah)” underwear reveal! But I have to say my fav scene was on the school bus. It felt like lil Zoe was taking back her power back at school.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) I’ve always written acapella! I go into the studio and session with a concept and often some idea of melody and lyrics. And then in the room we just go from there! For this song I had the idea and main chorus in my head already. So, this one was a quick write!
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I’m not the one touching the board or playing the instruments, but damn do I have a lot of opinions! [laughs] I’m always there sitting next to my producer shouting out ideas or edits I hear. Honestly, I really should just start learning how to produce!
Q) You have “Kiss My (Ah),” “EAT” and “Dirt” out now. Is there a full album or EP in the works?
A) *insert mischievous face* OMG YES!! I have so much in the works. And a few more singles until I can fully speak on the matter.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) Truly, I don’t have one favorite place. I’ve toured so much this year and, on each tour, different cities go harder than others! I’m always surprised. But if I had to choose one NYC because it’s a pretty perfect excuse to go home and be a city girl again for a sec. And as for venues, girl, I don’t care where I perform as long as the stage has enough strutting room I’m happy.
Q) You’ve previously teamed up with Sophie Powers and Emi Grace. Who is someone(s) you would like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Literally so manyyyy people!! I really love Fcukers. I’d love to do a remix or collab with them.
Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Fcukers!! They are the perfect combo of catchy melodies and lyrics with a DJ dance track driving it. They are also in NYC, so I feel connected to them automatically. But like usual, I can’t stop listening to my 2000’s icon girlies like Rihanna, Britney, etc.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Literally just thank you so much. This has always been my dream. I can’t imagine spending my life any other way, so thank you for making it POSSIBLE b*tch!!!! ❤️❤️
