Web Series Wednesday – Another Castle

“Sometimes all we have is our art to change the hearts and minds of those who’s opinions differ from our own, especially in spaces that are aggressively male-dominated.” – Popcorn & Wine Productions
WHAT? Another Castle. Where does this come from? Ever played Super Mario Bros.? If so you should, be aware of the statement “sorry your princess is in another castle.”

Popcorn & Wine Productions is founded by Ruby Goldin and Samantha Sutliff. If these names look familiar, they should. Both Ruby and Sutliff were recurring characters during Season One of The Leslie Series.

“To create funny and compelling content created, written, directed, produced and starring women. To promote intersectional feminism and positive representation of the LGBTQ+ community. To break stereotypes and shatter glass ceilings. To see women portrayed in new, different, exciting and truthful ways. We seek to represent women of all backgrounds, orientations, ethnicities, and beliefs in a more honest, realistic and favorable light than what we currently see on (and off) screen.”
P.S. Anyway I can get this exact statement on a T-Shirt? I wear a large, just saying….
WHAT IS ANOTHER CASTLE ABOUT?
Another Castle is an original web series, created by Samantha Sutliff; written by Samantha Sutliff and Kate Johnson (writer and creator of The Leslie Series) that follows the lives of two best geek friends TJ (Valerie Yu) and Barrett (Samantha Sutliff) as they pursue their passions in nerdom. The story alternates between the worlds of fantasy, comic books and the real world.
TJ is a play along channel superstar who has just gotten her first opportunity to take her gamer profile to the next level with the help of Barrett. Barrett is a struggling artist who is trying to find herself through her work. “Through quick wit and a plethora of geek-filled references, we follow the girls through love and loss, career challenges and successes, and the many challenges women face in a male-dominated subculture.”
Oh, and the two main characters are also two original female super heroes (Felicia and Thunder Jane)! Did I forget to mention that?
WHY SHOULD I WATCH?
If I am being honest, the first aspect of this project that attracted me, were the two founders of the production company Popcorn & Wine Productions. Ruby and Samantha were amazing in the first season of The Leslie Series, and frankly I just wanted more of them. What made me fall in love with this project was the Mission Statement (see above) and these compelling words from the Production company:
“Now, more than ever, we need to be telling these types of stories. We are on the cusp of historical change that could be detrimental to all women everywhere, and diverse female voices in art are essential to bringing about change. Sometimes all we have is our art to change the hearts and minds of those who’s opinions differ from our own, especially in spaces that are aggressively male-dominated (emphasis added). And along with said art, comedy and satire are arguably even more crucial during times of political upheaval. Popcorn & Wine Productions is looking to create stories and content that can be a reflection of, and reaction to, the darkness of society today. Plus, we really want to see some badass chicks winning at life and beating down the bad guys, don’t you?”
