WHAT? Hit the Ground, Running

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Hit the Ground Running is a brand-new comedy web series about the trials and tribulations of paying your dues to reach your dreams. The Australian series follows two aspiring filmmakers, Judd (Carlo Ritchie) and Mia (Ruby Blinkhorn), who take jobs as “runners” on a set with the goal of working their way up the industry. While being on a real film set is extremely exciting, they quickly learn how unglamorous life is at the bottom rung of the ladder.

For those who don’t know, a “runner” is the lowest ranking position in a film crew. It’s incredibly demanding and runners are usually responsible for all the things no one else wants to do. It’s the equivalent to a Production Assistant. Their duties tend to be time-consuming and thankless and, much to Judd and Mia’s dismay, not always as easy as they seem.

The latest episode of the series, “The Security Door,” has Mia and Judd acting as human doorstops, tasked with simply holding the door open and waiting for the actors to arrive. Hit the Ground, Running gets stronger with each episode and “The Security Door” doesn’t disappoint. Mia’s frustration is all too real and her speech about wanting to bust on set and finally pitch something is extremely relatable. Then, there’s Judd with an idea he’s so dedicated to that he doesn’t realize he’s regurgitating Bonnie and Clyde in different ways. As someone whose subconscious has betrayed her when it came to coming up with new ideas, I could relate.

Hit the Ground, Running is a great balance of humor and heart with short and sweet episodes enjoyable the whole way through. It’s no surprise the web series made its rounds on the festival circuit, racking up multiple nominations and a handful of best series awards.

There are currently three episodes available on their Vimeo page and if you’re a comedy fan or have any connection to the entertainment industry, you’ll definitely enjoy this series. And an extra little bit of fun, their socials feature some on-set experiences submitted by viewers, highlighting how truly crazy filmmaking can sometimes be. I’m hoping to see more Hit the Ground, Running episodes released soon!
