What? That’s My DJ

Who? Created and directed by DW Waterson. Starring: Emily Piggford, Jade Hassouné, Kelly McCormack, Jacob Neayem, Kyle Mac, Dayle McLeod and Kristian Bruun.

Why Should I Watch? Epic house music and an inside look at Toronto’s nightlife is what you’ll get from this series. Created by DW Waterson AKA hey! dw, one of Toronto’s most in-demand DJs, the series currently has two season, each following the lead character in their respective nightlife roles.

The first season follows Simon (Jacob Neayem) and his struggle to work his way from the bottom of the totem pole to the top. Along the way he meets Meagan (Emily Piggford) who he, of course, falls for because how could you not? He gets sucked into the popularity of it all and by the end is featured doing his own set at a big beach party at the end.

The second season follows Meagan from the first season, her life as an event planner who in an effort to start promoting her own events sets out to throw her own party with the help of her friend Sam (Jade Hassouné). As if the idea of throwing a killer party couldn’t get any better, throw in a hot DJ named Hannah and the plot thickens. Also, shout out to Kristian Bruun who plays Donnie Hendrix on Orphan Black for special guest appearances in the second season!

Spoiler alert: Hannah and Meagan totally have heart eyes for each other, but it’s not that simple and as their story unfolds, so does Meagan’s emotions. Personally, the way their relationship is portrayed is such a beautiful disaster. The acting from Piggford rocks you as you watch her fight back the emotions she’s struggling so hard to suppress. Her pain becomes yours and you feel for her. Hannah will frustrate you but at the same time you’ll understand her temptress ways and quite possibly the internal battle she’s struggling with.

The directing is superb as each season’s first episode is a short episode introducing you to the main character but from their point of view. You can see Simon and Meagan greeting others, taking drinks and more, which really makes you feel like you’re one with the character or sitting nearby watching the story unfold. I love the way that the two seasons are intertwined. You meet Meagan in season one and you can spot a Simon cameo in the first episode of the seconds season as well! One of the best episodes of the second season that stands out is episode three, in which the episode takes place via video chat between Meagan and Sam, while Meagan is totally Facebook creeping on Hannah. The addition of social media and alternative ways of telling the story are such a great added layer that it really makes the audience feel like they’re part of the story.

Where Can I Watch? The first season is eight-episodes and available on Vimeo. The eight-episode, second season is always available now on the Night is Y’s YouTube channel. Immerse yourself into the electric nightlife and fall in love with Meagan just as hard as I have. Follow the series on social media and keep an eye out for some exclusive interviews coming your way from netTVnow!
