“A piece of cake” is a simple phrase that means something is not overly challenging. It’s a common everyday used saying when confronted with a task. With the film A Piece of Cake a task, as simple as it may be, can actually become the ultimate challenge. The movie showcases these thoughts with humor and brilliant writing while emphasizing the bond between a father and daughter and the lengths a parent will go to just to make sure their child happy and know they are loved. A Piece of Cake is truly a must watch for anyone who loves family comedies.

Written and directed by Austin Bragg and Meredith Bragg, A Piece of Cake is the story of Jim (Rich Sommer), a desperate father who has just made a birthday promise to his daughter Cora (Riona O’Donnell). He spends a lot of time tracking down the request for specific decorations only to find out his daughter’s favorite cake decoration is illegal. He, therefore, descends into a confectionery black market. Jim, feeling down about having to break his daughter’s heart, is then given another opportunity where he faces the ultimate question – whether to break this birthday promise to his daughter or break the law.

Cora, who is played by the lovely and talented Riona O’Donnell, steals the film. She is able to set the tone and the main reason for the movie in a matter of minutes. The scenes between O’Donnell and Sommer make this movie the masterpiece that is sure to be. Watching these two on the screen makes your heart melt as you feel for both of their characters. These two actors are brilliant together and you will see their connection even when they aren’t in the same scene together. But I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how amazing of a performance Natalie Britton gave as Claire, Jim’s wife and the mother of Cora. The comedic timing from both Sommer and Britton was one of the main things that pushed the movie through. Each actor bringing their own flare and special touch made this movie a fantastic watch.

The vision of this film was nothing without the teamwork of The Bragg Brothers who directed this film with such heart and humor that leaves you laughing through some of the serious moments as well. Also, the work of cinematographer Adam Lee helps create the world that is brought to life. Each person brilliantly uses their talents to create a film that envisions the struggles that Jim faces throughout. Crafted with contrasting light vs dark, A Piece of Cake is a film that can be seen through the eyes of tone and direction.

I loved every second of A Piece of Cake from start to finish as I was left laughing. However, it was the tender notes of the family that really drove into the heart of me, watching a father battling moral conflicts because of the love he has for his daughter in such a different way than I was used to seeing in other films. I believe that The Bragg Brothers outdid themselves with this film, but it’s unlike anything viewers have seen and I highly recommend stopping and watching this film. The battle of right, wrong and love are what makes this movie a must see.
