Interviews
Aisha Noel – Sign Your Name
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) It’s a mixture of pop, Soca and sometimes Dancehall flavors. It’s very Caribbean with upbeat tempos.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Machel Montano, Rihanna, Beyoncé.
Q) How did attending many calypso songwriting camps when you were young help shape you as an artist and songwriter?
A) Well, I think it gave me some of the skills I needed at the time to help me better understand what I was already doing on my own. It helped me get practice and confidence which I needed. I took those lessons with me as a foundation that I build on all the time as I continue to write.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Sign Your Name.”
A) “Sign Your Name” was written by myself and Daryl Gervais and produced by Jhay C. It’s a story of being bold in love and proclaiming how you feel for someone. I wanted to make a song like that where I’m making myself a bit more vulnerable and saying exactly what I wanted. So, this song is a reflection of my feelings at the time.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) The message in the lyrics. It’s very relatable and a lot of them would’ve felt that way before, wanting someone to be upfront with them about how they felt. I think even if you’re in the other position and you’re scared to let the person know, hearing a song like mine might just give you the confidence to do something about it.
Q) How did you come to work with MusicTT to have “Sign Your Name” featured on his Project Spotlight album?
A) I was a part of the third cohort of Music TT’s Spotlight program, which is an artist development program and as part of the program we released an album with all the artists having featured songs on it.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) A lot of the time I have a beat that I’m writing to, and I create a song based on the vibe that I’m getting. But I don’t need to have backing track before I can create a song. When I first started writing songs and for a long time they were strictly pulling melodies off the top of my head. It’s still like that sometimes when a nice phrase comes to mind and I think, “Maybe I should develop this.”
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I wouldn’t call myself a producer, but I’ve been learning a few things. There are a couple great producers in my country that I enjoy working with on my songs.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) I definitely see an EP and album in the future. I’ve been making so much music, some that hasn’t been released yet so I’m quite optimistic. That’s been something I’ve been wanting to do for a while.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) Jean Pierre Stadium Trinidad because the woman it’s named after is a relative of mine and Bogota Colombia because Colombia really helped set me on my path.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) There are so many, but I’d say Koffee
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Right now, it’s been Major Lazer. He would also be someone I’d love to work with. I enjoy all his releases and I love that he embraces artists with various styles.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) Everyone is on Facebook and Instagram these days. It’s where we post and chat and that way we’re always communicating. We can’t always see each other face to face, so being able to share on social media gives us that chance to interact with each other. I get to share news, my lifestyle and new music. I also get to show my appreciation for their support.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you!! Your support means the world and I love you all!
