Albert Tsai – Coop and Cami Ask the World
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) What are the recent projects you are working on?
A) I am about to start filming Season 2 of “Coop and Cami Ask the World.” I also just finished recording my new DreamWorks animation movie Abominable, which will be in theaters on September 27, 2019.
Q) Please tell us the premise for your show “Coop and Cami Ask the World.”
A) “Coop and Cami Ask the World” is about a brother-sister duo who have a “Would You Rather” livestream channel where they make their decisions by crowdsourcing opinions from their fans.
Q) What made you want to be a part of the series?
A) I have watched Disney Channel since I was a little kid, so I was very excited to join the Disney Channel family and that’s what made me want to be a part of this series.
Q) How was your character Fred originally described to you?
A) Fred was originally described to me as Cooper’s (Dakota Lotus) best friend. They told me Fred hangs out with Coop and Cami (Ruby Rose Turner) a lot and helps their livestream channel. His personality was also described as quirky and fun, with lots of “interesting” hobbies.
Q) Were you familiar with any of your costars before working with them on the show?
A) No, I wasn’t familiar with any of my costars before starting “Coop & Cami.” But we quickly became good friends after working on the show!
Q) You have great comedic timing. Is it something that has come naturally to you or have you had to work at it?
A) I’ve always loved comedy and making people laugh, so you can say that comedic timing comes naturally to me.
Q) What have been some of your most memorable moments from filming the series?
A) One of my most memorable moments from Season 1 of the show has been filming the Christmas episode. We filmed it in the middle of summer in Los Angeles while the scenes required us to wear giant snow jackets in the “cold winter of Minnesota,” which was pretty ironic and hot! The other memorable moment for me was filming the spy-themed episode, as there were lots of action-packed scenes that I liked to shoot.
Q) What do you think it is about this show that has made it such a fan favorite?
A) I think “Coop & Cami Ask the World” is really fun and relatable to the audience, as it’s about live-streaming and making your decisions online, which a lot of people do nowadays. The show is also about how family and friends’ support helps teens navigate their lives and resolve real world problems. It’s a good reminder that there’s no substitute for IRL time with loved ones.
Q) We’ve loved you on shows like “Fresh Off the Boat” and “Dr. Ken.” What has it meant to you have Asian actors as leads of these shows?
A) I think it is very important to have representation on TV and I am grateful to be in both of these shows that portray Asian-American families from different perspectives.
Q) What advice would you give to up and coming actors and actresses?
A) My advice to the up and coming actors and actresses is to always believe in yourself, do what you love and never give up. Be persistent and follow your passion!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I want to say thank you to all my fans for their love and support and I can’t wait to share more!! Follow me on Instagram and Twitter @alberttsai and on Facebook @OfficialAlbertTsai to stay tuned for more.
