Interviews
Alexandra Beaton – The Cheerleader Escort
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) I just finished up filming Season 7 of the hit show The Next Step. You can catch it on Universal in the USA, Family in Canada, and Disney pretty much everywhere else!
Q) Please tell us the premise for the film The Cheerleader Escort.
A) The Cheerleader Escort, to me, is about a young girl trying to find her feet in a new, and complex, situation. Cassie, my character, is kinda thrust into a world of money, romance and what she thinks is sisterhood. Luckily, she has a strong moral code and a great mother to help her through.
Q) What made you want to be a part of the movie?
A) What made me want to be part of this movie was Cassie! She is such a great character to play. She is naive but not dumb, optimistic but tentative and, in her heart, a really brave girl. Combine that with cheerleading, Lifetime’s amazing level of intrigue and a wonderful director and I knew it was going to be a great project.
Q) How was your character Cassie Talbot originally described to you?
A) She was described as strong, but also naive and gentle at the same time – which rang true to me.
Q) Was there anything you added to her that wasn’t in the initial character breakdown?
A) I think I brought to Cassie a certain level of humor. Plus, I wanted her to strap on her detective hat at a certain point in the film and I think that really comes through.
Q) What kind of prep went into your portrayal of a cheerleader?
A) Luckily for me I have a background in dance, so I can do a few moves if I have to and am comfortable with choreography in general. So, really it was just learning the cheers themselves and making sure that I was being cheerleader not dancer because there really is quite a difference.
Q) Talk about working with costar Damon Runyan
A) Damon was such a blessing to work with. He constantly made sure I was comfortable and I tried to do the same for him. It was so much fun bringing these characters to life.
Q) What were some of your most challenging scenes to film?
A) Some of my most challenging scenes contain spoilers! My last scene with Gabby (Keara Graves) will always stick out or me, as well as the hospital scene with my mum. They were just difficult because I love those two women so much. It was amazing to get to work with them.
Q) What advice did director Alexandre Carriere offer that you took to heart while shooting?
A) Alexandre constantly told me to have fun. He gave me so much freedom to play and explore. I knew I was in such good hands with him so it made letting myself go and just feel so easy.
Q) How did you shake off a long day of filming?
A) I love to cook so after a long day it was nice to head back to my place, put on some music and make a meal.
Q) What do you think it is about this movie that will make it a fast Lifetime thriller fan favorite?
A) Oh gosh! I hope it becomes a fan favorite. I think it’s the characters who people will connect with the most. Everyone in this movie had different motives and reasonings for their actions and it makes so a cool dynamic for the viewer.
Q) You are a part of social media. Are you looking forward to the fan feedback you will receive to the movie?
A) Yes, I am! I am @albeaton on Instagram if anyone is looking! I’m excited to hear what people think about the film and to see if people resonate with Cassie.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and the work you do?
A) Thank you so much! I love my job, but I also know it would not be possible if no one watched. So, thank you for watching and I hope you like it.
