Beth Hall – Mom
By: Kelly Kearney
Q) Season 7 of the wildly popular CBS show “Mom” is about to kick off. Without spoiling anything, what can we expect from Wendy this season?
A) We’re only at the beginning of the season, but I can say that we will find out a little bit more about Wendy this season.
Q) Wendy went from teary eyed and emotional, to sort of sassy with a big helping of dark humor. How did you feel about your character’s growth and was it challenging to step into “new Wendy’s” shoes?
A) I like the progression the writers have taken with Wendy. Crying every episode is not easy. She’s getting more confident with her friendships with the women. I always love to take on new challenges with acting, so I’m up for whatever they choose for Wendy.
Q) “Mom” is a comedy about a mother and daughter overcoming their differences and addictions. The show has tackled some important topics like abortion, domestic violence, homelessness, foster care, and of course, various addictions. What are some timely and thought-provoking topics the show will cover this coming season?
A) Well, we’ve pretty much just gotten started and they never tell us ahead of time what’s going to happen, but we are definitely dealing with Bonnie’s new marriage and what that means to her and everyone around her. We also deal with having financial issues.
Q) You play opposite Allison Janney and Anna Faris. Are there any similarities between you and your character?
A) The similarities between Wendy and I are that we both want to be liked. Also, I do cry easily!
Q) Bonnie, played by Janney, is always so sarcastic and rough on your character. What do think it will take to finally cut Wendy some slack?
A) I actually hope Bonnie doesn’t cut Wendy any slack because I love those interactions!
Q) All sarcasm aside, what’s it like working with the hilarious and endlessly talented Allison Janney?
A) As I am sure anyone who has ever worked with Allison will tell you, there is no one better to work with as an actress and as a person. She’s just a wonderful person and puts on a clinic every week for the rest of us to enjoy.
Q) What’s been your favorite Wendy moment to date?
A) I think when I pushed the barrel into the car in the maple syrup episode and ran off to find a Denny’s to go pee. I love doing physical comedy, so when I get a chance to do that, I’m happy.
Q) What do you think it is about the show “Mom” that continues to make it such a fan favorite series?
A) It’s the characters. People can relate to these women and realize they are not alone. So many people have come up to me and said how they wished they had friends like us. Each character is unique and flawed and relatable.
Q) Besides “Mom,” are you working on any other projects the fans can look out for?
A) I just appeared on the new game show “25 Words or Less,” which was a lot of fun. I love playing all sorts of games, but especially love word games!
Q) Outside of acting you’re also a keen poker player, even playing in celebrity tournaments. What is it about poker that you love?
A) I can sit and play poker for many hours at a time. It relaxes me, believe it or not. I love that every hand is a new opportunity for something exciting to happen. I particularly like tournaments because it adds more strategy to your play.
