Bex Taylor-Klaus – Dumplin’

Q) What are the recent projects you are working on?

A) I just finished shooting Blackbird in London, and that was insane! I’ve got a top-secret project coming down the pipeline that I’m really excited about but other than that I’m all wrapped up for the year and eager to hit 2019 running!

Q) Please tell us the premise for the movie Dumplin’.

A) Dumplin’ is about a young girl named Willowdean (Danielle Macdonald) who feels like an outcast who signs up for a local beauty pageant to the shock of her whole town. Things get kind of crazy, when a Dolly Parton inspired drag queen takes Willow and her friends under his wing and inspires them to see things in a totally new way. It’s a really inspiring, fun story. Plus, drag queens!

Q) How was your character Hannah originally described to you?

A) Hannah was described to me as a rebel and an outcast. She’s really tough on the outside, but she’s a sweet girl and a really great friend to those who can get close enough to see it!

Q) Did you get a chance to read the book the film is based on before shooting?

A) I did! Julie Murphy is a genius.

Q) Were there any special skills you had to learn for the role of Hannah?

A) Hannah does a martial arts kata for her talent. I do Krav Maga (and a little Jiu Jitsu), but it’s been YEARS since I’ve had to memorize forms and katas like that! I also had to learn how to speak through prosthetic teeth.

Q) Hannah is constantly teased about her teeth. What was the process like for getting your prosthetic?

A) It was really cool! I went to a prosthetic studio out in California and got molds taken of my teeth.

Q) Talk about working with Jennifer Aniston.

A) Jennife rAniston was very kind and warm to all of us. Her mere existence made Maddie[Baillio] cry.

Q) What were some of your most memorable moments from filming Dumplin’?

A) JenniferAniston’s existence making Maddie Baillio cry. No, seriously, any and all moments where Danielle, Maddie and I were on set together. There was one night in particular where we caught the giggles and there were tears streaming down our faces.

Q) What makes Netflix the perfect fit for this film?

A) Netflix is the perfect platform for the underdog story.

Q) With your characters, we see them push boundaries and turn pain into power at times. What is it about these fierce but flawed characters we relate to and need to see more of on screen?

A) They’re honest and realistic. There is not a human among us worth a grain of salt who isn’t in some way flawed and trying to overcome it. Media has a responsibility to reflect the reality of the world. People consume media and it truly shapes their opinions of the world. We need to harness that power for good.

Q) We have seen you take on some really dramatic and diverse roles that really showcase your range. There is a balance of vulnerability and complexity, as well as being innately compelling. What connects you with these characters?

A) First of all, thank you for the kind words. It means a lot. I wish I could say this without being conceited, but oh well … the thing is, the vulnerability and complexity is something I’ve always had myself. I see it in these characters and as I fall in love with them, I want so desperately to be able to bring them to life.

Q) When talking about inclusivity and diversity, how can we work on expanding perspectives and amplifying LGBTQI voices so that we see a broader spectrum of representation on screen?

A) I feel like bringing in queer voices of color is a huge necessity.

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) It’s easily accessible! I wish I had a more thoughtful or deep answer than that. I just really like the ease.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and the work that you do?

A) Thank you. I truly would not be able to continue doing what I do without your support. It means the world.
