Bexley – Far From Home

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) Grungy, melodic, distortion-driven rock.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Wolf Alice, Queens of the Stone Age, Soundgarden, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) Usually, a song starts with the music for us. Sometimes I (Amanda) will write down phrases that I think of or hear somewhere, and they often lead to parts in a song or even inspire us to create a song with that feeling. But usually, we have a riff to start us off.

Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) All the hands. We write, produce and record all of our music. Steve [Costello] and I are the main “producers.” I think that there’s this myth that a producer is 100% necessary when creating a record, but really it isn’t, especially when you’re surrounded by your bandmates who all have wonderful ideas to grow the song. We’re proud of it. That being said, I’d love to work with certain people in the future, Josh Homme recently produced a Royal Blood song that I absolutely love.

Q) What are some themes you explore on your debut LP?

A) Really the whole record is an expression of multiple emotions. It takes you on a sort of mental roller coaster ride going from sad to angry to melancholic to hopeful and everything in between.

Q) What tracks on the LP hold a special place in your heart and what makes them so significant?

A) Far From Home holds a special place in my heart. I well up sometimes when we play it. For me, friendship is so sacred. And feeling alone is so difficult for so many, especially right now. I think the song helps me feel connected to the things, people, memories, etc. that make me feel at home.

Q) Will you be heading out on tour for the LP or are you more focused on live streams for now?

A) We hope to tour in 2022. The world is an unsteady place right now so fingers crossed.

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations stand out to you?

A) Seattle will always be one of my favorite places to play. I grew up playing everywhere you can in that town and there is so much music history in the venues where many of my favorites have played.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) Desert Sessions would be a dream come true.

Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) I’ve been playing Blue Weekend by Wolf Alice on repeat. It’s such an incredible album. They’ve completely outdone themselves and grown into a mature band. So many layers and beautiful harmonies. It really has a good mix of heartfelt lyrics and total punk rock chaos.

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) I despise social media. But at the same time, I am grateful for social media allowing me to connect with people I never would have without it. It makes everyone more accessible. That part of it is important I think because without it nobody would hear about anything you do except by word of mouth. A necessary evil I suppose. Plus, the memes are great.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) THANK YOU! For taking the time to listen to an independent band and being receptive to what we come up with in our heads. New music is coming in 2022.
