Black Lightning – The Book of the Apocalypse: Chapter Two: The Omega
By: Jessica Wolff
Peter Gambi (James Remar) rushes to Jennifer Pierce (China Anne McClain) with special gloves. LaLa (William Catlett) shoots at him, asking if he’s with Tobias Whale (Marvin ‘Krondon’ Jones III). Gambi assures him he’s not, and Lala lowers his gun. Gambi tries to cool Jennifer down as he reports what’s happening to Black Lightning (Cress Williams) and Thunder (Nafessa Williams).
Jennifer sees a manifestation of Perenna (Erika Alexander), who tells her to get out of her current state. Perenna talks her through it, telling her to flex her powers to figure out how to control them. Jennifer is able to cool herself down, but Gambi is knocked out by the heat. She shakes him, begging him to wake up.
Black Lightning and Thunder arrive, and Black Lightning determines that Gambi still has a pulse. He reports the situation to Lynn Pierce (Christine Adams), arguing that taking him to a doctor would raise suspicions. Thunder suggests that Gambi would only need a shot for the pain, and Black Lightning tells her to take Gambi and Jennifer to the sanctum before deciding to check the building for evidence.
Tobias criticizes Giselle Cutter (Kearran Giovanni) for not taking care of LaLa before he chased them out of the building. Cutter tells him he needs to have a plan when dealing with a metahuman, and Tobias laments the fact that Black Lightning keeps coming back and ruining things for him.
Cutter reports that the police officers that shot Cape Guy won’t be charged, and Tobias sees it as an opportunity to cause chaos in the city and take control of it. Tobias theorizes that Black Lightning gets power from the city’s power grid and resolves to take his powers from him before killing him for good.
Black Lightning looks around the building and finds the pods inside as Anissa and Jennifer take Gambi back to the sanctum to tend to him. As Black Lightning reports the pods’ location to Lynn, Jennifer rants that she blames Tobias for Gambi’s condition as well. Anissa calms her down, and they discuss her ‘Black Bird’ alter ego.
Jennifer reminds her of Jefferson’s code, but Anissa insists ‘Black Bird’ is still needed. Jennifer suggests that she go out with her, and Anissa declares that they have to get Gambi’s temperature down quickly. As Tobias talks to his painting of Tori, Cutter reports that she’s strategically started violence in Freeland. She urges him to get some sleep, but Tobias refuses.
Dr. Helga Jace (Jennifer Riker) points a gun at Black Lightning, but Lynn knocks the gun down before beating her to the ground. Jace begs them not to turn her over to the ASA, and Black Lightning points out that she just tried to shoot him. She offers information on a plan to release metahumans in exchange for police protection. Black Lightning promises to see what he can do, and Jace deduces that he has a contact at the police office.
Bill Henderson (Damon Gupton) takes Jace into police custody. Agent Percy Odell (Bill Duke) visits and surprises Lynn as she works on the pods, and she reports the pods are stable. He recommends they transfer the pods before the Markovians can get them, but Lynn argues the move will destabilize them. Odell argues that destabilization is better than the pods falling into Markovian hands.
Anissa reports that Gambi’s vitals are stabilizing as Jennifer watches news footage of the riots. Jennifer questions how rioting helps, but Anissa argues that most people want to get the attention of people in power to affect change. Henderson brings Jace to the police station and the power in Freeland goes out.
Gambi’s backup power comes on and Anissa declares she needs to get out there as she watches the intensity of the riots build. Gambi walks out and Jennifer and Anissa embrace him. He asks Jennifer if she’s okay, and Jennifer tells him he shouldn’t have gotten so close to her. Gambi tells her they’re his family and makes contact with Black Lightning. Jefferson is relieved to hear he’s okay, and Gambi reports the power in his suit is low. However, Jefferson refuses to come in and cuts off communication.
Anissa offers to go to him and tells Jennifer she can’t go with her. Gambi tells her that he’s going to get the power back on, and Jennifer tells him she’s going with him. He argues against it, but she tells him to trust her. Gambi tells her she needs to control her emotions, and she agrees. He reminds her she’s had no training, but she promises to do whatever he tells her. Jennifer argues she’ll follow him no matter what, and Gambi lets her go with him.
Instant (Tosin Morohunfola) shoots his way through the police station to get to Jace’s cell. He teleports into the cell and tells her she’s wanted in Markovia. Jace identifies him as a bounty hunter and offers to give him more than the Markovians, but he tells her he doesn’t negotiate before teleporting her out of the cell. Tobias enjoys the sight of Freeland burning to the ground, declaring he’s going to rebuild the city the way he’s always wanted.
Rebecca Jones (Brooke Ence) freezes the feet of several agents to the ground. Black Lightning lands in front of her and Joe (Esteban Cueto) as Thunder arrives and blows the ice away with her powers. Black Lightning and Thunder prepare to fight the two, as Reverend Jeremiah Holt (Clifton Powell) stands up in front of his church, declaring that the church will be a sanctuary during the riots.
Black Lightning and Thunder fight the two metahumans, but Marcus Bishop (Hosea Chanchez) stops them with his abilities as he and Darryl Robinson (Derrick Lewis) join the fight. Black Lighting and Thunder continue fighting, and Joe engulfs Black Lightning in flames. Joe is shot before he can shoot more flames and LaLa lowers his gun, explaining that his feud with Black Lightning is over. LaLa declares his only focus is killing Tobias and walks away as Thunder is trapped in a ball of water.
Black Lightning is frozen in place before he can help Thunder and Gambi shoots his way into the power plant. Gambi and Jennifer find the primary generator frozen. He asks Jennifer if she can create small blasts of power, and she expresses confidence. Gambi gives her instructions and Jennifer is able to unfreeze the generator with three blasts of energy.
Gambi restores the power and Black Lightning powers back up. He breaks free of the ice and frees Anissa before they work together to take out the three remaining Masters of Disaster. Tobias is angry that his plan is failing, and curses Black Lightning. Cutter stops him from unleashing more metahumans, and Tobias chokes her. She breaks free of his grasp and pulls out a blade. Tobias asks if she’s going to cut him, but she decides to leave him instead.
Lynn attempts to administer the serum into the pods, but the process is interrupted. The kids break out of the pods, and Lynn orders the ASA agents to not touch them. Odell tells them to stand down and pod kids walk away in a daze. Black Lightning and Thunder arrive, and Lynn explains the situation as the pod kids walk past them and out of the building.
Gambi tells them they need to stop the ASA from claiming the pod kids, and Lynn suggests she can trace the signal of where the briefcase is with the information Jace gave them. Lynn traces the location and Jennifer recognizes the location. Gambi tells her not to go, but Jennifer believes she has the ability to fly. Jennifer focuses her energy and flies out of the van.
Tobias talks to the painting, and LaLa comments on it as he enters his loft. LaLa shoots Tobias, but the bullet has no effect on him. Tobias laughs, and says a Latin phrase that causes the gun to drop out of LaLa’s hand. LaLa hits Tobias repeatedly, but Tobias laughs as he falls to the ground. Tobias explains that he brainwashed him to control him as the faces of everyone LaLa has killed manifest on his body all at once. LaLa screams in pain, and Tobias orders him to sleep, calling him Tattoo Man.
As Tobias laughs at LaLa’s efforts, Jennifer bursts into his loft. She tells him to call her Lightning and declares that this is payback as she engulfs him in her lightning. Black Lightning arrives and orders her to stop, but Jennifer declares Tobias deserves it. Black Lightning is unable to stop her powers with his own, begging her not to become a killer. He is hurt in the attempt and falls to the ground, causing Lightning to release Tobias.
Lightning checks on Black Lightning, and he relives Tobias’ murder of his father. Tobias tries to shoot them, but the gun is empty. Black Lightning and Lightning work together to raise Tobias up with their lightning and slam him to the ground. Black Lightning declares Tobias is his and fights him as Jennifer cheers him on. A kick sends Tobias across the room and knocks him out.
Holt gives a sermon about how he survived a coma due to God’s love and how they should praise God for giving them Black Lightning and Thunder. Black Lightning and Thunder put out the fires of Freeland as Holt declares that Freeland will rise again as love will stop the evil. Odell looks at the three pods in his possession containing Issa Williams (Myles Truitt), Wendy (Madison Bailey), and Khalil Payne (Jordan Calloway).
Tobias is led to an underground prison in handcuffs as the guard captain (Derek Russo) welcomes him to the pit. He explains the collar around his neck nullifies Tobias’ power, but Tobias declares they can’t keep him there. Tobias asks for a lawyer, but the captain tells him he doesn’t get one and locks him in the black site.
As they prepare dinner, Jennifer tells Lynn she’s proud of her, but Lynn is confused about the compliment. Jefferson tells her to take the compliment, and Anissa arrives with cobbler. Lynn asks if the cobbler is her recipe or Jefferson’s, and the rest of the family makes fun of Jefferson’s cobbler recipe.
Jefferson starts crying and they assure him they were joking. They ask what’s wrong and he tells them he’s happy. He explains that he’s always worried about them when they’re out and that he’s happy they’re all together and safe. Jefferson admits that he sometimes thinks of quitting and taking them away from Freeland, but he can’t due to the life they have there. He declares that he shouldn’t have to hold his breath until they return home but reiterates that he’s happy they’re all home.
The family moment is ruined by Odell walking into the house. He tells them he knows who and what they are, and Lynn tells him to leave. Odell tells them that the Markovians have a stockpile of metahumans and Jefferson tells him to leave. However, Odell refuses, telling them the Markovians have Jace. He explains the amount of metahumans in Freeland makes it the greatest threat to Markovia. Odell declares the Markovian war is coming and Freeland is ground zero.
