Blindspot – Clamorous Night
By: Jessica Wolff
Roman (Luke Mitchell) assigns five different assassins a different member of the team, and tells Kira Evans (Gloria Reuben) that the FBI is taken care of. She warns him that they can’t have any of this lead back to Crawford, but Roman assures her that it won’t. He pours them drinks and she tells him about how her predecessor was banished for putting Crawford in jeopardy. She warns him to stay clean, as Crawford will move on from him.
Patterson (Ashley Johnson) briefs the team on Crawford’s flight pattern. Edgar Reade (Rob Brown) wants to know if they have something on the land deal, but Tasha Zapata (Audrey Esparza) tells him they have nothing. Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) is frustrated, and Rich Dotcom (Ennis Esmer) arrives with several boxes of pizza. The team ignores him and Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander) insists that there must be something in the tattoos they can still use.
Rich reminds them that the tattoos will be nearly impossible to solve without Roman’s guidance. Weller asks how long Roman has been posing as Tom Jakeman, and Patterson remarks that he’s been good at covering his tracks. Reade urges the team to get some rest and they’ll try to get some answers tomorrow. Weller asks Jane what she wants for dinner, but Jane is too worried about Roman. He reminds her that she has to eat, and Rich asks them when the last time they went out was as he approaches them. He books them a table at a restaurant, and tells them that Weller’s credit card will be charged if they try to cancel.
At the restaurant, Jane and Weller toast to their relationship, but find that they hate the drinks served to them. Weller questions why they took advice from Rich, but Jane admits that Rich was right about the cases taking over their lives. She declares that she should have brought Roman in two years ago so that none of this would have happened. Weller reminds her that Crawford and Hirst would still be threats if it wasn’t for Roman, and that the new tattoos brought them back together.
Jane spots a mystery woman (Jenel Stevens) watching them, and remembers seeing her outside their apartment that morning. She comments that she can’t have a normal night without being suspicious of someone, and Weller replies that he loves that about her. Weller suggests that they pursue the woman as she leaves and decide to split up. Outside, Jane investigates a noise and a man grabs her from behind. She tries to fight him off but the mystery woman tazes her. She wakes up in a van with Roman talking to her via webcam, telling her that the assassins will kill Weller and her friends.
During the briefing at FBI headquarters, Reade notices Millicent Van Der Waal (Lauren Stamile) conducting another interview. He tells everyone to get some rest, and Rich later warns him that Millicent might be cleaning house in the FBI. Reade insists that the interviews are all about him, and Rich decides to do some snooping in her files. When Reade tells him not to, Rich says he won’t but makes a gesture indicating that he still will. Reade continues to order him not to, but Rich continues to act like he’s going to.
Reade visits Millicent, and tells her that her making people nervous is starting to interfere with FBI work. He tells her to talk to him already, but she promises she’ll get to him. She brings up his meetings with Jonathan West, and promises to get to the bottom of it. Later, Reade and Millicent call a cab at the same time and Reade tells her she can have it. She tells him they’re going in the same direction and suggest they share it.
In the cab, Millicent tells Reade that she’s just doing her job and wants to weed out corruption. Reade accuses her of using him as a scapegoat for their failure to fully investigate Hirst, and she gets out of the cab. Reade leaves a message for Megan and hears the buzzer. Millicent tells Reade that she left her purse in the cab and asks to come inside. Reade lets her in and lets her stay until the locksmith arrives, and she admits that she doesn’t mean to make people uncomfortable.
However, she tells him that she can’t drop the investigation and suggests he resign. Reade refuses and she tells him that she has a letter on her desk recommending his suspension and a criminal investigation. He gets angry that she’s making the decision without interviewing him, and questions whether she has any concrete evidence against him. He reminds her that a criminal investigation would end his career, and asks for her to sit down and have an unbiased interview with him.
Reade points out his bathroom and gets a call informing him of a distress call from Zapata at a church shooting. As he tells Millicent he has an emergency, he hears sounds of a struggle in the bathroom. He opens the door and an assassin charges at him with a knife. As the assassin puts a knife to Reade’s throat, Reade looks over at Millicent’s body.
At the initial meeting, Zapata notices Reade looking at Millicent before he orders everyone to rest. She tries to talk to him as he walks away, but Rich stops her and warns her that people are still upset about the Borden lie. Zapata tries to protest, but Rich tells her about he ruined his own friendships and how he’s been at the FBI ever since. She is not in the mood for his advice, but he advises her to give things time to return to normal.
Zapata attends the memorial for her friend Ricky, and runs into his sister, Alexis Parkin (Coral Peña). Alexis tells her about her police training, and that she looks up to her. At the end of the service, Alexis asks if anyone else wants to share their memories of Ricky, and Zapata gets up. Zapata tells a story about her relationship with Ricky. She explains that their romantic relationship became platonic and breaks down as she apologizes for giving up on him. Zapata admits that she knows what it feels like, and it’s not good.
Alexis gives Zapata the picture of her with Ricky, and Zapata admits that she doesn’t recognize herself in the picture. Alexis asks for advice as a rookie cop, and Zapata tells her to join for the right reasons. Before she can elaborate, Zapata spots the assassin and pulls Alexis down with her to dodge gunfire. Zapata uses Alexis’ communication device on her uniform to call for help, identifying herself as FBI. She tells Alexis to shoot the assassin from underneath the balcony as she distracts him. Zapata shoots at the assassin as Alexis shoots at the floor of the balcony until she kills the assassin and he falls off the balcony.
As Zapata calls Reade, he fights off his assassin and stabs him in the struggle. He answers the phone and they determine that the rest of the team could be in danger as well. Reade tells Zapata Patterson’s location and she decides to go and check on her. When she arrives, she sees people running out of the building as it explodes.
At the initial meeting, Patterson gets a message from Jack Izenberg (Bryce Pinkham) asking if their date is still on. As Patterson prepares for her date in the locker room, Rich approaches her and tells her she looks nice for once. She tells him she has a date, and he asks whom it’s with. Patterson tells him to get him to stop asking, and Rich gets excited. She tells him to relax, and he tells her to take even the first date seriously.
Patterson meets with Jack, who asks if she’s ready for the scientific ice cream making. She says she is, and he tells her that he booked the Groupon when he was with his ex and tells her that she is Diane for the night. The date is boring and the conversation is awkward. As Chef Clayton (Kevin R. Free) gives them instructions, Jack causes their concoction to explode over Patterson’s dress.
Patterson leaves to clean up, and Jack apologizes. She insists it’s okay, and hears the sound of her Wizardville app from Jack’s phone. He confirms that he has Wizardville, but that he downloaded the app illegally for free. She tells him he’s horrible, but decides that they should start the date over. An assassin throws a smoke canister into the hallway and shoots at them. They duck behind cover and Patterson shoots at him with her gun.
Pulling Jack into a nearby room, Patterson barricades the door and questions why Jack didn’t bring his service weapon. Patterson asks Jack to help her create an explosion, and is surprised that he vapes. Zapata arrives as Patterson sets off the explosion as the assassin steps into the room. Patterson and Jack step out of the fridge they hid in, and Zapata kills the assassin before he can shoot Patterson. Zapata fills her in on the situation, and reports that they can’t reach Jane and Weller.
At the restaurant, Jane and Weller split up while pursuing the woman. Weller bumps into a man on his way, who then follows him. He spots the assassin as he approaches him and they struggle as the assassin attempts to stick a needle in his neck. Weller hits the assassin with a frying pan, grabs the needle, and injects it into the assassin. He runs outside and can’t find Jane. Weller answers his phone and tells Reade what happened.
As Jane is trapped in the back of a truck, Roman taunts Jane about the deaths of Weller and her friends. She reminds him that he was helping them, and calls him out for turning so quickly. He tells her he’s in the market for a new family, and has no choice but to kill them. Jane asks why she’s still alive, and Roman states that he wants her to watch everyone else die first.
As they regroup at headquarters, Weller asks about the woman, but Patterson tells him that she can’t get a good view of her on the camera. Rich spots a man on the camera taking a selfie next to her, and hacks into the restaurant to determine the man’s name. He then goes to his Instagram account to pull up the selfie with the woman’s face clearly in view, allowing Afreen (Ami Sheth) to run facial recognition software.
As Weller determines that finding the truck will lead to Jane, Jane accuses Roman of being unable to kill her. She admits that she was the same, and warns him that she hopes they never meet again. Jane tells Roman he should have done this himself, and destroys the truck’s electrical system by smashing the monitor’s power supply. She unties her feet and attacks her captors when they open the door. She fights them off, but the woman aims her gun at Jane. Before she can fire, Weller shoots her as he approaches the truck.
Weller informs Jane that everyone is okay, and warns everyone that they now have to be careful with how they deal with Crawford. Alexis visits Zapata at headquarters and gives her the photo, before asking her to finish the advice she was going to give before they were shot. Zapata admits that she was unable to escape her past at the NYPD, and that she has to keep moving forward. Alexis compliments Zapata’s speech at the memorial, but tells her that she never gave up on Ricky.
Reade tells Rich that there’s nothing to talk about concerning Millicent’s death, despite him pointing out that her death dissolves her investigation of him. He tells him about the letter, and Rich tells him that he didn’t find the letter during his search of Millicent’s office. As he leaves the office, Rich pulls the letter out of his pocket and shreds it.
Patterson tells Jack they aren’t a good match. She gets on the elevator with Zapata and thanks her for saving her life. Zapata downplays it, and asks about Jack. Patterson tells her that it’s not a good fit, and rejects Zapata’s offer to talk about it. Weller asks Jane about what Roman told her in the truck. She tells him she realized that Roman isn’t going to get away from her again, even if she has to kill him. Roman packs and declares that he’s going to do the job himself. Kira warns him that he’s too close to Crawford to pull it off, and advises that they start working on Crawford’s objective instead.
