Blindspot – Everlasting
By: Jessica Wolff
Patterson (Ashley Johnson) yells at the person playing the trumpet next door before her alarm goes off. She steps into the elevator, and talks to Jack Izenberg (Bryce Pinkham), who asks if she’s coming to his talk. Patterson tells him she’s well versed in the subject, and he compliments her research. Tasha Zapata (Audrey Esparza) walks in, and Jack asks her to come to his talk. He then asks her to get coffee, but she turns him down as she and Zapata get off on their floor.
Zapata asks what she’s doing, telling her she needs to get back on the horse. Patterson reminds her she has reasons to be cautious, blaming herself for David’s (Joe Dinicol) death and for trusting Dr. Robert Borden (Ukweli Roach). Edgar Reade (Rob Brown) invites them into his office, and announces his engagement. They congratulate him, and Reade asks Zapata to be his best man. Outside, Patterson suggests that Zapata tell Reade how she really feels about him. Zapata replies that she had her chance, telling her about the time she rejected Reade when he kissed her.
Afreen (Ami Sheth) tells Patterson that she’s cracked one of Jane Doe’s (Jaimie Alexander) tattoos. She shows her that multiplying numbers on the tattoo by pi lead to a military autopsy report. Patterson compliments her work and tells her to keep digging. She overhears Jane and Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) arguing, and they tell her that it’s over what to do with the Intel that Avery’s father was involved in Crawford’s shady business. Jane admits that she doesn’t question the Intel, but is hesitant to tell Avery until they have confirmation.
Patterson promises to investigate and tells the team about Afreen’s work on the case. Afreen jokes that it was as easy as pi, and Reade jokes about it being open mic night. Patterson shows them three separate military autopsy reports that show evidence of doctoring. She tells them that the bodies were all cremated, but that there’s experimental technology that allows autopsies to be done on remains. Reade refuses when finding out that Patterson isn’t acquainted with the technology, but agrees when Zapata suggests involving Jack.
Col. Sara Ferguson (Linda Powell) argues with Reade, insisting that there’s nothing wrong with the original reports. Gen. Peter Mahoney (Dominic Fumusa) comes in and offers his help with the investigation. Patterson, Jack, and Afreen set up the machine and start the test. Later, Patterson hears rumbling from the machine, which explodes when she investigates. Patterson wakes up in the same way she did the previous morning. She goes to the elevator, and comments that Jack was in her dream last night. Jack has the same conversation and Patterson starts to notice that something is off. Zapata asks her about turning him down, and Patterson comments on having déjà vu.
Reade calls them into his office, and Patterson blurts out the news of the proposal. He asks if Megan called her, and Patterson is shocked that Zapata doesn’t remember this conversation from yesterday. Reade gets mad at her for ruining the surprise and asks Zapata to be his best man. Patterson leaves the office and Afreen talks to her about the tattoo. Patterson finishes solving the rest of the tattoo for her, declaring that her déjà vu is over. However, the briefing starts the same way and Weller asks a question about the case, causing Patterson snaps that he already knows the answer. Jane asks if she’s okay, and Afreen takes over the briefing. Patterson asks them if any of this seems familiar, and Reade replies that she briefs them every day.
Patterson makes an excuse to leave, and talks to herself in the bathroom, convincing herself that she’s not in the Matrix. She rationalizes her déjà vu and insists that she’s fine. Patterson steps out to see the machines being rolled in, and Zapata introduces her to Ferguson and Mahoney. Patterson mutters that it’s nice to meet them again, and Zapata asks if she’s okay. Patterson hears the machine rumbling and determines that somebody tampered with the machine on purpose.
Patterson wakes up again and asks what’s going on while her actual self is rolled into the ER. Patterson goes into the elevator, declaring to Jack that she’s not going out with him. However, she finds David inside the elevator and asks what he’s doing. She follows him out, explaining that she’s reliving the same day. He suggests that something went wrong on that day and advises her to fix it. She tells him that she wishes she could prevent his death, but David advises her to worry about today and break the loop.
Zapata tells Patterson that she should pursue David, but she reminds her that he’s dead. Reade calls them into his office, and Patterson attempts to break the loop by blurting out that Zapata is in love with him. She yells at him not to get married and to make things work before leaving. Patterson sees Stuart (Jordan Johnson-Hinds) and embraces him. She apologizes for not listening to him, and he tells her that he solved a tattoo. Patterson insists she already solved it, but then suggests that she’s stuck here because she hasn’t and asks for his help.
Patterson attempts to stop the test, announcing that somebody sabotaged it. The group starts arguing, and Patterson insists that they interrogate everyone. The team interrogates Ferguson, Mahoney, Jack, and Afreen as Patterson yells questions and accusations from the other room. Zapata tells Patterson that they began the test and she gets caught in the explosion again.
Patterson wakes up again, throwing her alarm clock across the room. She finds a naked Roman (Luke Mitchell) waiting for her in the elevator. Patterson asks why he’s naked, and he replies that he’s the bad boy she’s always had a crush on. She doesn’t argue with the insinuation, but forces herself to look away. He asks if she wants to get coffee, and says yes before correcting herself. Roman asks what’s wrong and Patterson concludes that him replacing Jack indicates that Jack is the culprit behind the explosion. Roman continues to flirt with her, and she nearly kisses him before hearing Zapata speaking over the loudspeaker.
Zapata updates the team on the case as Patterson lies in the hospital in a coma. Weller admits they should have never run the test, and Reade blames himself for authorizing it. Jane comments that it was an accident, while dream Patterson yells that it wasn’t an accident. Patterson tries to talk to Reade about the case, but he and Zapata inform her that they are engaged. Patterson is thrilled about the loop breaking, and rushes to solve the case. Jane and Weller check on her, but she sees that they are dressed as each other. Jane and Weller start talking like the other, and Weller replies that he is Jane.
Jane as Weller orders a psych evaluation and Patterson finds herself in Borden’s old room. She tries to run but Borden greets her as real Patterson’s heart rate goes up. Weller calls for a doctor, and the Female ER Doctor (Malikha Mallette) determines that she’s hemorrhaging. As Patterson is wheeled into surgery, Reade reports that the coroners who submitted the tampered reports committed suicide after filing. Jane concludes they were silenced, and Reade and Zapata leave to investigate.
As the doctor sticks a needle into Patterson’s arm, dream Patterson is hit with a tranquilizer dart as she tries to run. Patterson refuses to speak to Borden as he attempts to have a therapy session with her, and he detects that’s she’s angry. She talks about his betrayal and how she has trust issues because of it. Borden asks Jack, who has materialized next to Patterson, how he feels about it and he admits that he wishes Patterson would give him a chance.
Patterson refuses to talk any further, but David appears on her other side and attempts to convince her to move on with Jack. Borden suggests that Patterson believes that she is fated to lose anyone she loves. Patterson replies that she just wants it to be tomorrow, but Borden warns her that she’ll never have a future until she makes peace with the past. Patterson replies that she needs to stop the machine from blowing up, and determines that she won’t go to it this time. However, she finds herself back in the lab as it blows up.
Patterson wakes up again, but finds Jack teaching a high school classroom as she steps out of the elevator. The team is dressed up as Breakfast Club characters, and Zapata teases Patterson about her crush on Jack. Patterson recognizes the formula on the chalkboard and works out that the dead Marines were poisoned as she puts together the last pieces of Roman’s clues. Patterson demonstrates her findings on the projector, Roman, dressed as Bender, comments how good he is.
Patterson exits the classroom and admits that she doesn’t understand how the three cases are connected. David tells her to think, and helps her figure out that the three were on a covert mission together. He tells her to break the loop and the computer screens all turn to crossword puzzles. She steps into a matrix where she works out the details of the mission and that Mahoney is behind everything.
Patterson confronts Mahoney, but he denies the accusations. Weller arrests him, but he warns her that he’s going to regret this. She questions how she didn’t see it sooner, and Jane reminds her that she’s in a coma undergoing surgery. The machine starts rumbling and Patterson asks if she’s going to make it. She wakes up again, and panics as she insists she broke the loop. The doctor advises Jane and Weller to call Patterson’s family.
Patterson steps out of the elevator in hospital clothes and finds nobody in the building. She finds FBI Director Pellington (Dylan Baker) in the blown-up lab and asks what he’s doing there. Patterson insists she’s broken the loop, but Stuart appears and tells her that she merely solved the case. David tells her that there’s more to life than work, and the three of them point out that Patterson blamed herself for all of their deaths. David tells her that she needs to forgive herself to break the loop.
Patterson admits that she’s tired, and they tell her to let go. Patterson refuses, and David tries to convince her to go with him. She nearly takes his hand, but stops when she hears beeping. Patterson goes to the elevator and finds David, Stuart, and Pellington waiting for her, telling her it’s time to go up. Borden appears behind her and tells her not to let his betrayal keep her from the people she loves. He tells her all she has to do is step inside, but she declares she isn’t ready.
Mahoney attacks her, throws her, and drags her around. Patterson grabs the pole attached to her IV and wields it as a staff. She fights back, but Mahoney throws her on a table and strangles her as the doctors rush to revive her before she flat lines. The doctors defibrillate her as Patterson fights Mahoney off. As she throws him into glass, David and Stuart say goodbye to her as the elevator closes. Patterson wakes up and the team surrounds her. She finds that she can’t talk, but Reade gives her a pen and writes down that Mahoney is guilty. Jane and Weller bring him into custody and Zapata shows him the evidence against him.
Two days later, Jane and Weller tell Patterson that Mahoney confessed and bring her a crossword book. She tells them that they should tell Avery the truth about her father, telling them to break the loop of dishonesty. Zapata visits Patterson and comments on the flowers by her bedside. Patterson tells her they’re from Jack and that she agreed to go on a date that night. Zapata tells Patterson that she agreed to be Reade’s best man.
Zapata joins her on the bed, and Patterson tells her to tell Reade how she feels. She explains that she realized that they were all repeating the same mistakes, and they laugh about the dream. Patterson admits that the dream gave her the impression that Borden might still be alive. Zapata doesn’t believe it’s possible, but Borden tends to a Towering Man (Patrick Cooley), who tells him the attack is almost ready.
