Blindspot – The Big Reveal

Two years ago, Dr. Nora Lee Roga (Patricia Richardson) confronts Christian Kearns (Allen McCullough) about sales records of the zip drug after the drug proved fatal. Kearns promises that the unauthorized sellers have been taken care of and that she has nothing to worry about. Once Roga leaves, Kearns takes a call and tells them that Roga needs to be taken care of.

In the present, Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) checks on Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander) and Jane tells him she’s still getting headaches. She refuses to go home, insisting she needs to make up for the things Remi did. Jane compares having all of Remi’s memories to having a nightmare where she is watching herself do terrible things to the people she cares about. She questions why she should get special treatment over Tasha Zapata (Audrey Esparza), and Weller tells her that Zapata made her own choices.

Patterson (Ashley Johnson) asks Edgar Reade (Rob Brown) how things are going with Zapata, but Reade tells her and Rich Dotcom (Ennis Esmer) that Zapata hasn’t said anything. Patterson asks Reade how he’s doing, and he brushes the question off. Jane and Weller arrive and Patterson reports that the procedure worked, but that she’s stuck with Remi’s memories as well.

Reade tells her he’s glad to have her back, and Jane thanks all of them before apologizing for her actions as Remi. Patterson assures her that it wasn’t her fault, but Jane questions if Weitz will demand accountability. Reade tells her that he will want the situation to be over with, and Patterson reminds Jane that the zip poisoning is still killing her. Jane remembers Shepherd mentioning research by a doctor named Calisto, and Patterson promises to look into it.

Reade interrogates Zapata, listing her crimes, but Zapata doesn’t speak. He reminds her that she’s well aware of how these interrogations go, and that he will eventually get what he wants. Reade advises her to tell him everything, but she continues to remain silent. As Reade walks away, Zapata requests to talk to Jake Keaton (Chad Donella) and Reade questions why she would want to talk to him after he fired her. Zapata doesn’t answer, and Reade informs her he is in a coma. She accuses him of lying, but he tells her that he’s the only one she’ll be able to talk to. However, she still refuses to talk.

Patterson tells Rich that they need to solve the mystery of Calisto, and Rich suggests they approach using the Greek mythology angle. They use the story to find the clue on Roman’s data cache. After entering a password, they find they need a secondary password and solve it to reveal Roga’s file. Patterson and Rich inform Jane and Weller that they’ve identified the doctor, but that she died two years ago.

The team looks into Roga and finds that she has a son, Clay Roga (Evan Todd). Weller decides to talk to Clay while Reade decides to talk to Kearns Pharmaceuticals. Reade finds Sabrina Larren (Jen Richards) in his office and accuses him of holding Zapata at the FBI. Reade tells her that Zapata is part of an investigation, and Larren questions why he’s still working at the FBI while suspended. He tells her he was reinstated, and Larren promises to be back to retrieve Zapata.

Clay asks if he’s in trouble, and Jane explains that they’re looking into Roga’s research. He denies knowing anything about her work, but that he’s working to follow in her footsteps. Jane has another headache, and Patterson takes issue with Clay’s comment about his mother. After seeing Patterson’s information, Weller asks Clay about the large inheritance he earned from Roga’s death. Patterson and Rich show him proof of the inheritance, and Weller demands to know the truth.

After Weller threatens to investigate every portion of Clay’s life, Jane pulls him outside and reminds him this isn’t an interrogation. Jane tells him she understands his desperation, but that they’re not going to get answers unless he calms down. Rich reports that Reade’s search into Kearn’s pharmaceuticals has turned up empty, and Weller concludes that Clay is their only way to get answers.

Reade takes Zapata to see Keaton, explaining how he was shot. Zapata takes his hand, and Reade tells her that he’s the only person standing between her and the CIA. Patterson connects Roga’s work to a bank known for shady dealings and shows Rich that Clay’s inheritance was established the day after Roga died. She pulls up security footage of Roga walking into a bank that day, and they determine that she’s still alive.

Jane questions why Roga would fake her own death, and Weller believes that Clay knows more that he’s telling. They show Clay the security footage, and Clay cries as he questions whether Roga is still alive. Weller asks for his help finding her, but Clay insists he didn’t know she was alive. Jane suggests that Roga might need help, and Clay agrees to help find her. Patterson puts up Roman’s picture, but Clay doesn’t recognize him.

Rich pulls up Clay’s phone records and argues that Clay gave his permission for him to search them. Rich shows a series of calls at regular intervals, and Clay tells them that nobody was there when he answered. Jane suggests that calls may have been from Roga, and Weller tells Rich and Patterson to trace the calls.

Reade orders Zapata to talk, and she tells him she has somewhere she needs to be or something terrible will happen. He tells her that she needs to give information in order for him to help her. She confesses that she’s been deep undercover with the CIA the whole time. A flashback shows Keaton handing Zapata a top-secret case, telling her that nobody can know about the operation, including the rest of the CIA. Zapata agrees to the operation and Keaton burns the file.

Zapata explains to Reade that Keaton wanted someone on the inside of Crawford’s company to stop the next leader and the company’s operation entirely. She explains that she got in by gaining Blake Crawford’s (Tori Anderson) trust. In a flashback, Zapata turns off her communication to the team, telling Blake that Crawford and Roman will be arrested that day and urging her to trust her.

Reade asks Zapata about Keaton yelling at her in front of the team and firing her, and Zapata explains that they needed it to look like she was going rogue. In a flashback, Keaton compliments Zapata on her performance and tells her that they can’t bring the rest of the team in on the operation. Reade reminds her that it was the night they slept together, and Zapata admits that she didn’t know when she would see him again, assuring him that her feelings were real.

Zapata insists her story is real, but Reade tells her that she should have told the team the truth. She tells him she wanted to tell them but couldn’t. Zapata explains she knew she was in over her head when Madeline killed Blake and took over the company. A flashback reveals that Zapata asked Keaton to bring the team in, but he refused.

Reade confronts her about her break-in to his apartment, and Zapata insists she was trying to prevent Claudia Murphy (Britne Oldford) from killing him. Reade tells her that Claudia was MI6, and Zapata questions how he knows that. She tells him that she and Claudia agreed to sacrifice one of them in order for the other to prove their loyalty to Madeleine. A flashback shows that Zapata killing Claudia was faked, as Claudia climbs out of the car unscathed. Zapata insists that she’s telling the truth, and that she needs to be somewhere tomorrow or the whole operation falls apart.

Reade suggests sending the team, but Zapata insists she needs to go alone. He calls her out for not wanting the team involved despite her previous insistence, but she tells him that she’s scared of Madeline finding out. Zapata asks him to call MI6 to verify her story, but he tells her that they didn’t say anything when they called. Reade leaves, and Zapata tells him she’s running out of time.

Patterson and Rich tell Clay that they were able to trace Roga’s calls, but Jane tells him that he won’t be able to see her until they investigate the location. Reggie (Erik McKay) plays a recording of Clay telling his fiancée that Roga is alive for Kearns, and Kearns declares that Roga needs to die by the end of the day.

As they go to investigate the location, Jane confirms she wants to stay in the van and Weller tells her that it doesn’t matter where she is as long as he has his partner back. Weller and Patterson knock on the door, but Roga comes around the side of the house pointing a gun at them. Weller insists they’re not there to hurt her, and Jane asks if he needs help from the van. Patterson and Weller explain to Roga that they want to protect her in exchange for her research into a cure.

Rich comments that Jane seems eager to return into the field and asks what it’s like to be de-eviled. Jane admits that she’s struggling with Remi’s memories, and Rich admits that there are some things from his past he’s still struggling with. Jane asks if he feels like he’s changed since he’s joined the team, and Rich tells her he has no doubts. He comments that it’s easier to make good choices when surrounded by good people.

Weller shows Roga Roman’s picture, and Roga asks if he’s okay. He informs her of Roman’s death. She tells him and Patterson about her research and how her assistant was killed when she found out Kearns lied about shutting down the project. Roga explains that Roman approached her, and that he helped her fake her death, fund her research, and fund Clay’s inheritance. She tells him that she’s developed a cure but has been waiting for Roman to return. Weller tells her this it’s not too late to save Roman’s sister, and she agrees to help.

Reade tells Zapata that MI6 hasn’t confirmed her story and they’re running out of time. She tells him that she’s supposed to be recruiting Del Toro in Toronto, and Reade tells her he needs to know everything. Zapata tells him Madeline’s plan, and Reade gets notification from MI6 that Claudia has been missing for weeks. She points out that MI6 wouldn’t confirm the story, as Claudia was also supposed to be deep undercover.

Zapata insists she’s telling the truth and apologizes for what she put him through. She tells him that her work will be destroyed if she can’t arrive on time, begging him to trust his gut. Reade tells her that he’s her handler now, but any relationship otherwise is done. He tells her he’ll never forgive her for this, but that she is there best shot at taking down Madeleine. Reade tells her that she could have just told him, and that he will take her down if she is lying about anything.

As Roga prepares the cure for transport, she explains that this is the only batch that exists. Two cars pull up in Roga’s driveway and Jane informs Weller and Patterson. Reggie and his team enter the house, and Rich urges Jane to get out there and Jane exits the van. Reggie and his team shoot at the lab, and Roga is shot. Jane and Weller take out Reggie’s team, but the lab catches fire and the machine preparing the cure malfunctions. Weller tries to retrieve the cure, but Jane tells him it’s too late.

As Roga and Clay are reunited, Jane assures Weller that he did the best he could. Weller believes he could have gotten the cure in time, but Jane tells him she prefers him alive. Patterson promises they’ll keep looking for a cure, and Clay thanks them for getting Roga back. Roga questions if it’ll be safe, and Reade tells her that Kearns has been arrested. Roga thanks the team and tells Jane that Roman was looking into another batch of cells for a second cure. She tells Jane that Roman loved her and promises to create the cure once they find the cells.

Larren criticizes Reade for letting Zapata go, but Reade insists he believes Zapata’s story. She tells him that he made a mistake and Zapata’s actions will be on him now. Jane assures Weller they’ll find the cells and tells him that she learned that she is best off in the field and that she has a man who will walk through fire for her. He tells her he’ll never give up on her, and Claudia video chats with Reade to confirm Zapata’s story. She apologizes for her actions in his apartment and tells him Zapata cares about him. In Toronto, Zapata reports she’s ready to meet Del Toro but is kidnapped by the CIA first.
