Blindspot – The Gang Gets Gone
By: Jessica Wolff
Rich Dotcom (Ennis Esmer) tells Matthew Weitz (Aaron Abrams) that this is the worst blackout in history and sees that it’s spreading. Patterson (Ashley Johnson) tells Rich that Kathy Gustafson (Heather Burns) is involved, showing him Dominic Masters’ (Chaske Spencer) phone.
In the locker room, Edgar Reade (Rob Brown) confronts Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) and Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander) over what Hirst told him. Weller argues that he was protecting all of them but shoves Reade when he calls Jane a terrorist. Tasha Zapata (Audrey Esparza) and Jane attempt to break up the fight and Weitz demands to know why they’re fighting.
Reade lies that they’re blowing off steam and the team gets a group text requesting one billion in bitcoin to undo the attack. Weitz stops Weller and asks if they’re good. Weller tells him his secret is safe and joins the rest of the team. Rich suggests they pay the ransom, and Weitz asks for another plan.
Patterson suggests they reach out to Kathy using the phone number she gave them when they last saw her. Reade is upset that Patterson lied to him and she argues they have a way to track Kathy. They start arguing and Weitz orders them to stop. Zapata points out it would suspicious if they called her right after the attack and Jane suggests another option.
Kathy answers a call from Dominic and a glitched video chat appears. She tells him she was worried about him, and Rich explains to Reade that they’re simulating a glitchy video chat using his software. Patterson tracks Kathy’s phone to an Iceland museum and Rich tells them he’s heard rumors of an undercover cryptocurrency mining operation below the building.
Patterson argues she’s the only person who can stop the attack and Weller argues that their win would be his win. Weitz agrees to let them go, but that it needs to be unsanctioned and stops Rich from going with them. Weitz asks Madeline Burke (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) to tell him about the attack, but Madeline continues to maintain her innocence. Madeline comments that things haven’t changed in fifty years, declaring that the FBI needs to end.
As the team flies to Iceland, Patterson tries to break up the tense silence. Zapata tells Reade that Weller kept Weitz’s secret out of love, but Reade replies that’s the problem and Weitz asks Rich to look into Madeline’s father. Richard Shirley (Raoul Bhaneja) tells Weitz that he’s brought along two members of the Department of Justice and the new Director of National Intelligence, Lucas Nash (Dennis Boutsikaris).
Shirley brings everyone to the conference room and Nash explains that complaints have been made against the team that arrested Madeline and turns on an audio recorder. He asks Weitz where the team is and Weitz replies that they’re out doing their jobs. Nash asks if Rich is in the building, and Shirley suggests that he’s in Iceland with the rest of the team.
Nash gets Weitz on record saying the team’s mission is unsanctioned and Madeline is brought into the conference room in civilian clothes. Reade tells Weller he’s going after Weitz after the mission and Weller argues that Jane getting exposed would bring them all down. Reade points out they’ve already been compromised for a long time.
Madeline tells the room that she is innocent and was framed by the FBI. She blames the attack on the team, calling them rogue agents. She tells the room that the team committed all the crimes she’s accused of. Madeline insists that the team attempted to get a false confession to their crimes with coercion.
Reade tells Jane she’s not real FBI and Jane counters that she’s saved his life several times. He argues that the rest of them broke their oath by the company they keep. Madeline explains that the team works with a known criminal as Patterson argues that Rich isn’t there to defend himself.
Reade confronts Patterson about Three Blind Mice as Madeline discusses Patterson and Rich’s cyber-crimes. Reade reminds Patterson that Kathy is involved in the cyber-attack because they didn’t arrest her, and Patterson sarcastically tells him she’s glad he’s done looking the other way.
Zapata tells them to stop, promising that they’ll stop Kathy as a team. Madeline lists all of the other indiscretions the team has committed and Reade questions why Zapata would talk about the team after what she did. Zapata declares she knew he could never forgive her, and he gets mad at her for helping cover up Madeline’s murders.
Zapata reminds him how she covered for him as the rest of the team questions what she’s talking about. Madeline questions whether Weller chose to stay in the field because he likes killing people. A flashback reveals that Briana stole Weller’s bullets from his safe and Dominic used them to carry out his plan.
Reade comments that they’re not as moral as they thought they were. Madeline tells the room that Weller married terrorist Remi Briggs who attempted to infiltrate the FBI. Nash tells the room that the evidence is undeniable and requests that the Icelandic authorities arrest the team as soon as they land. Weitz reluctantly makes the call as Rich watches everything from his computer lab.
Patterson tells them they can salvage this, declaring that they’re family. Weller tells them that only Jane is his family, and Rich calls Patterson to warn them they’re being framed. The team gets alerts with them being labelled as associates of Dominic. Zapata shows them video of Patterson and Rich paying Kathy. Reade begs Patterson to tell him she didn’t pay Kathy, but Patterson admits they did.
Zapata suggests they hide and work to clear their names and Jane suggests they go after Kathy. Reade questions how they’re going to escape, and Patterson pulls out parachutes. Rich sees that the attack is spreading across the country as Weitz finds him hidden in a vent. Weitz tells him he needs to get out of there, but Rich tells him he can clear everyone’s name if he can crack the Helios file on Dominic’s phone. Weitz tells Rich to take the phone out of the building and that they’re the same before wishing him luck.
The team jumps out of the plane before deploying their parachutes in the middle of the mountains. Patterson suggests they pose as tourists, telling them that they’ll need Rich’s associate Ice Cream (David Clayton Rogers) to give them the elevator password to go below the museum.
Three people approach them and one of them holds up a phone with Ice Cream on video chat. Weller asks for the password, but Ice Cream reminds them he doesn’t know them. Patterson tells him that Rich was supposed to vouch for them, but Ice Cream tells them they’ll operate on his rules.
Weller decides that he, Jane, and Patterson will go to the museum while Reade and Zapata wait for the password. He insists they have to trust each other one last time and the group separates. Jane stakes out the museum while Weller reports that Ice Cream is late and Patterson reports that the authorities know they’ve escaped.
Jane suggests they move, pointing out they can get the password inside. They enter the museum as Ice Cream meets Reade and Zapata, telling them he wanted to meet them in person. Ice Cream asks for the paintings Rich stole in exchange for the password. Zapata agrees, but Ice Cream tells her he needs to hear Rich say it.
Jane, Weller, and Patterson get into the elevator and Patterson activates a panel. Rich argues with Ice Cream about the paintings, but Zapata tells Rich they’re running out of time. He asks to be taken off speaker phone and tells Reade he doesn’t have the paintings anymore. Reade takes him off speaker and Rich agrees to give up the paintings. Ice Cream is excited but tells them he’ll kill them all if Rich doesn’t deliver. Zapata asks for the password and Zapata texts it to Patterson.
Once below the museum, Patterson works to stop the attack. Rich video chats Patterson, telling her she’s making the attack worse. Patterson questions how that’s possible and realizes that Kathy rigged the system. Weller realizes they are on a security camera turning the attack into a global crisis. Patterson resets the system to stop the attack and Rich tells them that the money he put into the ransom account as bait has been transferred equally to bank accounts for each member of the team.
Patterson refuses to leave and stops the attack. As the lights come on, Weitz tells Nash his team is trying to stop the attack. However, Nash insists they’re cleaning up their own mess and shows him the bank deposits. He tells Weitz his team is done and urges him to distance himself from them. Nash gets intel that Rich is still in the building and Weitz tells Madeline she won’t get away with this. Shirley scrambles the signal and Madeline tells Weitz that she owns him. Shirley plays a clip of Dominic’s call blackmailing Weitz.
Rich texts Jane that the cops are closing in and Weller tells Patterson to sneak out of the museum. Patterson is hesitant to split up, but Weller and Jane tell her she can’t get caught. Rich hides Dominic’s phone in the vent as Weitz asks what he’s still doing there. Weitz asks Rich where the phone is and Rich refuses to give him the location. Nash comes in and Weitz shows him that Rich is in the vent.
Jane and Weller run back in the museum as the police approach and barricade the door. Jane holds her gun up and tells everyone to get down. Weller asks what she’s doing, and Jane tells him she’s buying Patterson some time. He goes along with it and fires a couple of shots into the ceiling. As they watch news coverage of their situation, Jane insists they can work their way out of this. The phone rings and Weller demands a helicopter, pizza for the hostages and vegan pizza for Jane.
Madeline tells Weitz he’s out of moves and Weitz asks about her offer to make him president. She reminds him he refused the carrot and now she has to use the stick. Weitz asks what she wants and Weitz holds press conference clearing Madeline of wrongdoing.
As they watch the press conference, Jane and Weller discuss how they’re going to get out. Madeline hijacks the press conference and thanks Weitz for appointing her the head of the new civilian oversight committee. She addresses the team and urges them to turn themselves in.
Jane and Weller are immobilized by flashbangs and taken out of the museum. A flashback reveals Ice Cream telling Reade and Zapata that Jane and Weller took hostages. Zapata asks if he can get them SWAT uniforms and he tells him he can get them SWAT officers for a price. Reade asks what else he wants, and Ice Cream tells Jane and Weller via video chat that their friends took care of them.
Weitz and Nash come in to interrogate Rich, but Rich refuses to talk. Nash promises he will and orders him to be taken to the boat. As a bag is put over his head, Rich tells Weitz that they’re not the same. Ice Cream brings Jane and Weller to the safehouse where they are reunited with Reade and Zapata. Ice Cream mentions that the house has interconnected tunnels underneath and Patterson greets them telling them that she had to wade through a stream to evade police dogs.
Madeline tells Weitz that her father wanted to be president, but the FBI ruined his career, causing him to kill himself. She promises to ruin the FBI, but Weitz argues the team doesn’t deserve this. Madeline insists they work for the FBI and actions have consequences before ordering him to get out of her new office.
Patterson hands the team new id cards and they laugh about the names she chose for them. Weller is surprised Patterson used her real first name and Patterson tells them there’s no going back. She tells them they’re going to need to do bad things to clear their names but tells them they have to work together.
Weller admits he was wrong and that they are all his family. The team agrees to stick together to the bitter end and Patterson puts on music as they talk about what will happen next. They continue to laugh about Patterson’s fake names, and Patterson tells them they can pick the names next time. Weller offers to take first watch, but Jane volunteers as the team continues to joke around.
As Jane steps outside, Nash tells Madeline that they’ve identified Ice Cream as an associate of the team as well as their location. Weitz suggests they arrest them, but Nash tells them the White House has greenlit a drone strike. Weitz protests, but Shirley reminds him he’s a fan of the drone program. Nash tells Weitz this isn’t his call to make and Weitz leaves the room distraught. Nash orders the strike and Jane watches in horror as the safehouse is bombed.
