Brit Daniels – Jump

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) I would describe my sound as “Commercial Pop,” for sure. Sometimes we like to play around and add darker elements to the production style of my songs, but for the most part it always has a catchy, commercial feel to it! I want to write something that will get stuck in your head and I always try to achieve that with everything I do.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Some of my musical influences are Julia Michaels (FOR SURE). I love everything she writes or puts out as an artist and I love how she writes so conversationally- that’s definitely something I always try to do as well. Sound-wise as an artist, I’d say my influences are Selena Gomez, Katy Perry and Halsey.

Q) How did you settle on covering Julia Michaels’ song “Jump?”

A) I always love everything Julia puts out and the second I heard “Jump” I knew that I had to do a stripped-down cover of it. I loved the fully produced version, but when I listened to the lyrics, I thought that it would be really cool to break it down and do something vulnerable with it.

Q) Talk about the process for coming up with your take on the track, including the beautiful piano intro.

A) I honestly just wanted it as stripped down as possible! The lyrics are so vulnerable and beautiful, so I wanted the instrumentation to have that same vibe. My friend Chase produced it and he thought the chorus needed a little something extra, so that’s where the chorus instrumentation idea came from. But other than that, we just wanted to keep it simple.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) I think the lyrics are so relatable and vulnerable. I think the stripped-down aspect of the song just adds more of that vulnerability, which makes it even more relatable to people.

Q) For your music, what is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) I honestly go into a lot of writing sessions with an idea already pretty thought out and some lyrics already written. That’s typically when whomever I’m working with will build the track, and then we’ll finish the lyrics and figure out the melody from there. It’s definitely a process, but I try to go into writes with some lyrics already completed to give us some more direction. I’ve gotten pretty good at being able to create lyrics without music, but the music is typically needed to finish out a song!

Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) I’m never the one who actually produces out a song, but I have a lot of say in the production of my songs. I always give who I’m working with a very detailed and solidified idea of what I want and I’m involved in the production process from start to finish. I want to love everything about the song, but I also know that production is whomever I’m working with’s expertise, so I do give them freedom to play around with what they think is cool (within the boundaries of the specifications I’ve given them) and then if I like it, we run with it and if I don’t like it we change things. I typically work with producers whose styles I love, so I don’t really ever have to change much – they just get me most of the time!

Q) What can fans expect from a live Brit Daniels performance?

A) They can expect a LOT of energy, catchy songs and a lot of fun!! I want people to leave my shows talking about how much fun they had and the memories they created!

Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming soon?

A) At the moment, I’m just planning on releasing singles very consistently in the near future, but man do I have some great ones lined up for release! I’m so excited for everyone to hear them!

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) I love performing at the Analog in Nashville. It’s a beautiful venue and it just has a cozy feel to it which I love. Also, the sound is incredible. I also love performing at the Back Corner because it has more of a cool, industrial feel to it. Plus, it’s where I played my first ever full band, fully produced outset, so it’s slightly sentimental. Plus, it just has a cool vibe.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) Julia Michaels, hands down. She’s my favorite. But then I’ve always said I’d love to collaborate with Bieber too, so that would still be very cool.

Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) I’m currently listening to new singles by Zedd and Elley Duhé – “Happy Now” is a JAM. Lyrically it’s great and it’s light and boppy. I love it. the Lauv and Julia Michaels Collab, “There’s No Way” is another one that I’m jamming right now. It’s super chill which I like, but it’s still catchy. definitely a cool song. I’m also listening to pretty much anything by Anne-Marie right now. I love her sound and her vibe. I think she’s definitely a strong new-comer who will be a heavy hitter at some point.

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) Social media has opened up so many incredible doors to allow me to connect with my fans, and I’m so thankful for it. I just love that it gives me an outlet to consistently show them what’s going on in my everyday life – on Instagram especially. I try to keep my posts music related, but if you watch my stories you’re bound to see some weirdness from my everyday life and I love that it’s so easy to share stuff in the moment.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) Honestly, I’d just love to say THANK YOU! Your continual love and support really does mean the world to me. I’m so grateful to have so many encouraging fans in my life who express their love consistently and it just makes my heart so happy. ALSO, be on the lookout for all the new things coming SOON!
