DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – Freaks and Greeks
By: Courtney Groom
On Waverider, the Legends are looking through books trying to find something that will help give them the power to touch the Loom. Charlie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) says that it requires three people with the power of gods to use the Loom. Zari (Tala Ashe) asks Sara (Caity Lotz) to use her newfound future vision, or as Zari calls it “Sara vision,” to see if she needs to read the book she’s holding. Sara grabs onto her hand, having a future vision that Zari finds nothing in it.
Gary (Adam Tsekhman) enters bringing in more books and gives Sara a pair of dark glasses. She puts them on, telling Gary to get out of her face, with Constantine (Matt Ryan) agreeing with Gary that Sara should get some rest. Constantine then finds a reference to the Chalice of Dionysus, stating that whoever drinks from it becomes a god for a day. However, Charlie points out that all of the gods’ artifacts were lost when the gods lost their believers’ worship. But Nate (Nick Zano) says he recognizes the chalice from his time in college known as “the Chug Cup” at a rival frat house. Whoever drank from it supposedly became invincible for a day. Gideon (Amy Louise Pemberton) scans social media and confirms that Chalice is at the Sigma Psi Phi Fraternity at Hudson University in 2020.
Ava (Jes Macallan) does the research and learns that every year all of the fraternities compete in the “Chug Challenge” to see which one of their members will drink from it. Ava starts to worry that the college kids won’t accept her. Mick (Dominic Purcell) and Lita (Mina Sundwall) come in and Ava asks Lita to help her with what kids are into in the present. Lita says that her guidance counselor told her to apply at Hudson, but she can’t afford it. Mick tells her to do it, saying that he can make it happen. So, Lita agrees to at least tour the university. Lita tells Ava not to wear her standard garb if she wants the kids to think she’s anything other than cool.
At the University gym the Legends go in dressed as students. Nate figures that since the Sigmas host the game they will find them and then go on to find the Chalice. Ava, dressed as the school mascot, sends Nate and Zari off in one direction and Astra (Olivia Swann) and Charlie in another to find the cup. Astra figures that they should take the Chalice by force, but Charlie tells her that she has to prove that she can work as part of a team since the three Loom users have to work as a team. However, Astra isn’t interested in working for a Fate and storms off.
Mick and Lita take the tour and a rich father, Gene Newman (Brian Calvert), boasts that his son Henry (Elior Desage) is majoring in finance. Mick is not impressed and mentions Iron Heights, but Lita covers saying Iron Heights is an art college. She then tells her father to play along.
As Nate and Zari go through the gym and check out the booths of the various Greek houses, one group of frat brothers challenge Nate to show them what he’s got. He takes the challenges, guzzling a can of beer, and says that he turns to steel. As the frat brothers cheer Zari leads Nate off. They see the Sigmas come in, chanting and holding the cup. Nate calls over Ava and the others.
The Sigmas’ leader, Dion (Drew Ray Tanner), welcome everyone to the Chug Challenges and holds up the Chalice. Nate realizes that Dion was in the Sigmas when he was there and hasn’t aged. Charlie identifies Dion as Dionysus.
Dion says that he announces the 2020 challenges and will reveal the first one tonight at the Sigma rager. Charlie tells the Legends to leave it to her. She calls Dionysus by name and he asks says who she is. They hug and Dion sets the Chalice down. Dion talks about how he’s a lifer at Hudson because the party never stops and they worship him without knowing he’s a God. Astra tries to pick up the Chalice, but can’t move it. Dion realizes that Charlie is there to give one of her “gang” immortality. He says that only a Greek can pick up the Chalice. He lifts it up and leaves. Charlie sees some passing sorority girls and realizes that they have to follow Dion’s rules…join a sorority and win the cup.
The group return to the ship and tell Sara their plan. The Thetas are hosting a pledge social which Charlie and Astra must join. Astra is disgusted with their plan and Charlie tells him that they have to play by Dion’s rules.
Henry talks to Lita about her extracurriculars and she talks about her part-time job. He says that she’ll want to fill out her application more if she wants to get into Hudson. They come to Newman and Henry says that his grandfather donating the building should help get him in to Hudson. Nate runs up to join the tour and says that he’s a professor and is a doctorate at rival university, Brixton. Mick says that Nate is Lita’s dad and tells Nate and Lita to go with it.
Charlie and Astra go to The Theta’s tea party and sit with three other pledges. Astra prepares to take a swig from her flask, as Charlie yanks it away from her and tells her that Astra needs to at least try to fit in. Astra starts acting haughty and the sorority leader is impressed. She decides that they’ll start with Astra’s table. She hands out a paddle and says that anyone holding it has to answer her question. Mel (Lillian Doucet-Roche) gives it to Astra and asks her what she did before she came here. Astra says truthfully that she ran Hell. The leader figures that Astra is ambitious and then has Charlie speak. Charlie talks about how she traveled around the world with friends and Astra says that they’re rejects. When Charlie says that she used to be in a punk band, Astra insults her and says that she’s no different from the sisters she ran away from. Charlie asserts taht Astra was her sister’s lapdog and they fight over the paddle and break it. Mel says that the whole table is exiled and none of them are Theta material.
Charlie and Astra return to the Waverider to tell the others that they failed. The two women argue until Sara and Ava stop them. Zari says that they’ll start their own sorority.
Nate and Lita walks around the campus. He takes Lita to Greek row. He explains that they’re the most influential people on campus and they come to the Sigma house. Nate says that he’s there to party and Lita figures that Nate has a man crush on Dion. Dion comes over and greets them, recognizing them from the gym. Nate mentions that he has responsibilities and Dion invites him to come by later. Lita tells Nate to go inside and party while she does some scouting. Nate agrees.
On the ship Ava calls together the charter meeting of Delta Chi Sigma, Sorority of Legends. Charlie finds an abandoned house and remodels it with magic to look like Constantine’s house. Gideon presents some prospective members rejected by Theta and Ava approaches one of them, Inez Martin (Jennifer Tong). Inez immediately accepts her offer. Another member is potential influence, Lisa Lindhome (Jade Falcon). Zari recruits her and they share videos of a cat and Beebo. The third prospective member is Silvia Hines (Briana Skye), a goth chic from the tea party. Silvia doesn’t see any point in partying. Astra bonds with her and suggests that they win over the masses with the illusion of fun. Silvia immediately agrees.
At the house Sara gives a pep talk to the three pledges and tells them that they’re Delta Chi Sigma. Lisa realizes that Sara is blind. Silvia asks what their motto is. Thankfully, the female Legends come up with a motto on the spot and Silvia figures that it’s avant-garde.
Back at the Sigmas we see Dion tellig Nate that he wanted to mark the occasion with a special stash of IPA that he brews himself. Nate takes a swig and Dion tells him that it’s magic. Nate wavers and Dion asks him why they came there. Nate tells him the truth, saying that they needed the Loom. Dion figures that Charlie is a Loom Faker and if she puts the Loom together then everyone loses free will…and the party.
At the House Sara trains everyone in sorority life and how to win the Chug Challenge. Zari hacks the campus computer to enter them in the challenge and goes to make nachos. Silvia thanks Astra for her advice. Astra is taken aback and then thanks Silvia. Charlie sees the exchange and figures that something is working. Astra says that the plan is working, even though it’s stupid.
Dion, frat bro Nate and the other Sigmas arrive to welcome the Deltas to campus with a party. Charlie figures that “Shotgun Nate” is under Dionysus’s spell. Dion tells them that they’re disqualified, as Nate told them why they’re really there. Astra complains that he can’t change the rules and Dion notes that he doesn’t have to play fair because he’s a god.
The Sigmas leave and Ava, Charlie and Astra tell Sara and Zari what happened. Astra says that she’s taking the Chalice by force or at least make Dion and the other Sigmas suffer. Sara tells her that she can’t do it, but Astra says that she’s done trying to fit in and they all look at her as an outsider.
Lita comes to Mick finding out that he’s at what is now Rory Hall instead of Newman Hall. He explains that he traveled back in time and donated the money for the building. Mick says that he didn’t want to ruin her chance. Lita says that she doesn’t belong with people like Henry. Mick tells her that she’s twice the person they’ll ever be. Lita assures him that he is as well, pointing out that he fought a demon dog. Lita suggests that they find a way to piss of some rich kids. Mick likes the idea.
Astra goes to the Delta house, grabs a flask and prepares to use it as a Molotov cocktail. Charlie catches up to her and tells her that she knows it isn’t right. When Astra says that it’s how she was brought up and can’t change, Charlie tells her that they don’t want her to change and that she can fit in with the Legends.
Putting down the lighter, Astra says that she won’t burn down the house. Charlie says that Astra still has a place with them even as herself. Nate comes by with a keg, still under Dion’s spell, and mentions that Dion said he gets power from his followers. He goes off and Charlie figures that if they take away all of his followers that the Chalice is released from his grasp. Charlie figures that there’s one way to get college kids away from a party: throw a bigger party. Astra is dismayed at the idea, but Charlie takes her along and says that the Legends have to out-party Dion.
The Deltas set up the House for a party, but no one shows. Ava figures everyone is at Sigma and that Charlie did everything they were supposed to, but maybe they should ask Astra what to do. Astra says that they have to take out the competition and she has an idea to bring down Dion.
Charlie goes to Sigma house and Nate sees her. Charlie then takes on Nate’s form. Once Nate suggests to Dion that they go off somewhere to drink and party alone from the crowd Zari hacks the playlist at the Sigma party and cuts it off. She then plays yodel music. Meanwhile, “Nate” takes Dion out to the garage where the booze is stored. Charlie reverts to her own form and Mick destroys the kegs. The kegs explode, depleting the partiers inside of the booze.
Astra and Charlie go into the Sigma house and hijack the party: inviting everyone over to the rager at Delta. Mick tries to lift the Chalice but fails. This means Dion still has his followers. Dion and his frat brother, including Nate, come over and confront Charlie and Zari. The god tells them that as long as he has his followers the Chalice isn’t going anywhere. Bros are bros for life.
Sara comes out and challenges Dion to beer pong. Dion points out that he’s undefeated. Sara says that he won’t be able to hold onto his followers once she demolishes him. The god accepts the challenge and says that if he wins that the Delta house gets shut down. Sara assures Ava that she’s a pro at beer pong and also she has future telling superpowers now.
Charlie announces the rules. Sara and Dion shake hands and then play. Sara uses her future vision and her training to beat Dion. On the final ball Dion loses and his followers leave him. Mick storms in and says that he has the Chalice. Dion salutes them.
Later, the Legends thank Silvia, Inez and Lisa for their help, but Sara says that Delta has come to an end. The three pledges say that they’re going to keep Delta going to provide a space for people to figure out where they fit in. Dion hands over the Chalice to Charlie as she prepares to drink it, toasting Behrad and Astra’s mother. Sara suggests that they should all drink from it and everyone does, except for Zari. The Legends all glow. Charlie says that they did it and now they should go use the Loom. Dion warns them not to do anything that would ruin his party.
Astra says goodbye to Lisa outside the house. Lachesis (Sarah Strange) confronts her. She reminds Astra that she would be in her debt, and now she’s calling in her favor.
