Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) It is a mix of pop, electronic music, with touches of R&B and trap. I wanted to make a different sound than what is done in Mexico, and I had already been doing pop and electronic music for a long time in my beginnings back in 2007. So, it was a mix of all these sounds. Now, we seek to make the sound more Latin and stick to our roots.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Earth, Wind and Fire, Bee Gees, Ariana Grande, Kehlani, Drake, The Weeknd and Justin Bieber.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Naranja.”

A) “Naranja” is a vibrant song that makes you want to get up, start dancing and cheer up. When I was making the lyrics, I wanted to make an inspiring song, that you know that there are moments when we feel weak but that you can always get ahead no matter what.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) I think that the rhythm of the song is the first thing they connect with. It is an electronic beat which you can enjoy at home, cleaning the house or exercising or even a night out with your friends and listening in the car.

Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?

A) Making the video for this song was quite an issue. First, the idea was to do it in Mexico City with the production company that had made videos such as “Daño” and “Te Descubrí.” But due to the pandemic we could not square it. The times did not happen and the song had already come out. Then, I wanted to do it in Acapulco, Guerrero, in my hometown, but there were many new cases of COVID, and we decided not to do it for our own safety. I preferred to only release a lyric video with the best moments I had in 2020. This video was released on May 13.

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) Yes, indeed it is the way in which I have settled down best in the past. First, I look for the sound. I give references of how I want the song to sound, and my producers get to work on those ideas, and it is always something original. I don’t like to copy any sound. When I get the beat, I get inspired by the feeling of the song and from then on I know what I’m going to write.

Q) How do you shake off a long day in the studio?

A) I’m a lot of watching TV shows. I can watch “The Office” or “Modern Family” and put it in the background while I’m on my phone digging through my social media. To relax I put on a TV show, and I lie down in the living room with my cat and place a food delivery if I am too tired to cook.

Q) Vlad Diaz lent a hand in production of the song, but how much of hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) In “Naranja” I put all the lyrics. Vlad and I have worked together for more than twelve years, since I was a teenager, therefore we know each other very well in terms of musical tastes. He told me, “I have this beat. I thought of you, and I think it is perfect for what you are looking for now.” We made the song in less than one week in which I finished the lyrics and sent it to him for the final touches. I don’t know much about music production. I’m more empirical and I look more for sounds and melodies.

Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?

A) That’s right. We are working on an album which we hope will come out at the beginning of next year. I have many beats that producers have sent me, and I would like to do them all, but we continue deciding which ones will enter this production.

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) Acapulco is my favorite place for everything. Although, I don’t live there. The shows in my hometown are always more special. I also hope that now that live shows are coming back that I can visit new places such as Guadalajara or Monterrey (in Mexico), and be able to do shows in the United States such as Los Angeles, NY or Houston. Since they are places that I have visited and I love them, I would like to take my music there.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) I am listening to a lot of music in English and my dream has always been to do a collaboration with Drake. He was always an inspiration for me and, in fact, the first single I released with this solo project was a cover/remake of “Passionfruit,” but in Spanish (“Passif”). And that is why I decided to take up music again as a singer four years ago. Although, I wouldn’t mind doing something with Kali Uchis or even Danna Paola.

Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) I’ve been listening to The Weeknd a lot. I’ve listened to him since he was doing hip hop, pop and R&B in the early days and I love his voice. He impresses me with everything he achieved in the last year despite being in a global pandemic. All the styling of the red suit and the concept of him was incredible. I’m also listening a lot to SZA. The song from “Good Days” over and over again. It seems angelic and at the same time super sensual.

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) Being on social media actively and constantly is the best way to connect with fans. Sometimes I have stopped posting for a while to rest, but it is as if I am not doing anything because that’s the way it is, if you don’t post and you don’t keep communication with the people you are out of everything. I like to know what they expect from the project, from the next songs, and it is very funny to see that they also like what I am eating or where I am.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) That I am eternally grateful that they share this journey with me because everything I do is for them. That I hope that my songs are in some way part of their lives or simply that they have heard a song. They are very important to me. And that you can follow me on social media like @dyangmusic to be aware of everything that is coming. Thank you! XO
