Ellevator – The Words You Spoke Still Move Me
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) World’s Hardest Soft Rock.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) We cast a wide net but lately we’ve been very moved by Kate Bush, Spoon, Peter Gabriel, Queens of the Stone Age and Explosions in the Sky.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Sacred Heart.”
A) It’s a love song about how intimacy and deep knowing can make it feel like there’s nothing left to discover and choosing to push on anyway in search of new depths. Ty (guitar) and I got married on a cold spring morning when I was twenty-two years old and he was nineteen years old. There wasn’t much chance to sell each other on our own myths, to be the mysterious stranger from outta town: we wrote our origin story together. Learning to love each other better has been a strange journey and the great gift of my life.
Q) What kind of fan response have you been receiving to this new single?
A) Folks seem to like it!
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) It changes significantly song-to-song. “Sacred Heart” started with a very down tempo, wurlitzer-driven voice memo from Tyler. It went through more fully realized versions than any song we’ve ever written until we discovered what it wanted to be all along: a brash, earnest, John-Hughes-montage rock song.
Q) Chris Walla leant a hand with production on your upcoming album, but how much of a say do you have in the production of your music?
A) We love to collaborate, and Walla is a masterful collaborator. We built a new chapter of this band together: you can hear everyone’s mark on the record.
Q) We’re seeing you perform at SXSW this year. What does getting to perform at this venue mean to you?
A) Austin is a wonderful town and SXSW is a rite of passage we’ve been intending to tick off for years now. It’s an honor to be asked.
Q) Will attendees be getting to hear any new tracks off your upcoming debut album The Words You Spoke Still Move Meat SXSW?
A) Yes! Almost the whole set will be from the record.
Q) What are some Ellevator songs that are fan favorites that you’ll be performing at Esther’s Follies?
A) Even though we only released it last week, we’ve been playing “Easy” live for quite a while. It’s steadily become one of our favorites to perform and it’s such a gift when audiences lose themselves in it right along with us.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I want to write a song with Stevie Nicks.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) Our phones are not a place we love to live, but we’re constantly humbled by the folks who are interested in what we make. It’s not as nice as sharing a drink at the merch table but we take what we can get.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Everything we do, we do it for you. Thanks.
