FEMME – All For You
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Sun drenched, feel good beats with wobbly basslines and catchy hooks. It’s like texting your ex while you’re trying to have the time of your life at your own birthday party. Happy and sad all at the same time.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) SBTRKT, Yaeji, Can, Bow Wow Wow, Peggy Gou, Peaches, Prince, Bowie and so many more. My musical upbringing was a complete mashup of different genres and alternative pop icons.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “All For You.”
A) “All For You” was written as a love letter to my career in music. I’ve spent most of this year with a power tool in my hand while I’ve built myself a new home and studio in London. It’s an ode to the lengths we’re willing to go to and personal sacrifices we make to keep the wheels on this ride.
Q) What makes the track the perfect Summer song?
A) It makes you want to move! This song is perfect for playing loud, bouncing around in the sunshine with a bottle of something in your hand.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) It usually all comes at the same time. Most of the time I program the beat and bassline. Then, the melody and lyrics kind of reveal themselves as I fill the rest in.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) It’s completely always 100% me. Always has been that way.
Q) What can fans expect from a live FEMME performance?
A) I’m doing a lot more DJing these days, but you’d expect to hear massive bouncy, wobbly beats that will make your booty quake.
Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming in the near future?
A) There’s an EP on the way and so much more music sitting on my hard drive ready for release.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) I like to play anywhere new, get the sense of the scene there and meet some new faces. Playing in London is always so much fun because it’s home and I know it like the back of my hand. I’ve just been awarded a six-week artist residency in China this autumn, which will mean producing/playing and collaborating with people over there. This will be totally new for me and I’ve no idea what to expect!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I’d love to work with Kah-lo as everything she comes up with is gold. Tirzah is also one of my favorite artists that I’d like to get in a room with. I’d also love to get my hands on a Grimes a capella and make a weird little garage banger.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’ve been so wrapped up in my own releases recently I’ve not been listening to much other music, but my go-to at the moment is my Girls Beats Bass playlist on Spotify that I’m always adding stuff to. It highlights electronic music being made by female and non-binary producers and I love discovering new artists for it weekly.
Q) You’re big into DIY fashion. What tips would you have for people looking to create their own clothes?
A) Just do you!
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) As an independent artist I rely wholly on the support of my fans, knowing that there’s people all over the world listening to my music gets me out of bed in the morning.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) All aboard the crazy fun ride. Think you know what to expect from me? Guess again. I’m always morphing and experimenting with my sound and I’m thankful that most of my fans have embraced that and along for the journey.
