Fox Jackson – Glimpses

Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) I would describe my sounds as fun and energetic. Hopefully something that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s full of influences from all my favorite artists of funk, soul and pop. “Glimpses” is definitely my populist song that I’ve released so far which is really fun because it immediately grabs people as it can be understood quite quickly in its musical motifs and ideas. My other releases are a bit more funk and soul driven, but it’s been nice to exercise something a bit more mainstream.

I would describe it as like eating a chocolate eclair. It’s good every now and again but you don’t want to eat a whole pack every single night. I think that’s what “Glimpses” is to me. It’s sweet, but I will be returning to something funkier.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Every time I get this question it’s always dangerous because I don’t know how long to talk about it because every artist will tell you there’s one million influences that they draw from in making music. I think that’s one of the great things about music as you can take ideas of things you know and love growing up and let that inspire you to create something entirely new that feels like your own.  So, here we go Prince, Anderson .Paak, Tom Misch, Rick James, Pharrell, Nick Hakim, Stevie Wonder, Harry Styles, Kool & The Gang, Earth, Wind & Fire, Shalamar, Leon Bridges and Sam Wills.

All these artists to name a few have inspired me at some point in my journey of crafting music. Whether it’s Prince’s vocals, Tom Misch‘s guitar playing or Stevie Wonder and Pharrell  upbeat, melodies infused with jazz and funk. They have all played a part in my journey of releasing music.

Q) “Glimpses” has already been a huge hit. Did you expect to get such a huge response from it right away?

A) Yeah, I mean I try and not focus on the outcome. I feel like it holds you back as an artist if you’re always looking over your shoulder for streams and wondering what I could’ve done more. That sorta thing keeps me up at night, so once it’s out to the world I try and say it’s not mine anymore and I hope people enjoy it, the way I enjoyed making it. I can’t do any more than just try my best and if people like it, they like it…In saying that, please go stream “Glimpses.” It really helps if you listen to it so then I can keep making more music. Love ya! [winks]

Q) The song is about getting to know someone/falling for them. Was it based on a special experience or story or just the general concept of meeting/getting to know someone?

A) So, it wasn’t based on a specific person, but it was based on my life as a young adult who had just entered the dating scene and was trying to figure out the type of person I want to be with. Still working on that part. [winks]

Q) What was the biggest challenge about writing the song?

A) It’s weird with this song it wasn’t so much challenging because this was one of the songs that came quite easy to me in terms of writing it. I try not to limit myself when I’m writing or judge what I’m putting out until it’s created. I try and let it flow as much as I possibly can because, for me, that’s how I create with the healthiest form. It’s really easy to censor yourself, be too hard and down about the process.

The hardest thing about this song was getting it out into the open. It took a little bit longer than I wanted it to, but I guess good things come to those who wait and I’m really happy it’s out and hopefully enjoying this lovely British weather that we’ve had this year so far. (If you don’t live in Britain, it has been raining nonstop.)

Q) Do you plan on making a music video to accompany “Glimpses?”

A) Yes, the music video is definitely on the way so keep your eyes and ears peeled for an announcement.  As soon as it’s ready to be revealed I will do so. The best way to keep up to date with all my stuff is through my Instagram; that’s normally where I make all my noise and do most of my posting. I haven’t got the hang of threads or Twitter yet so I will just stick to Instagram.

Q) The song was compared to Pharrell’s “Happy.” How does it feel to have it compared to one of the biggest songs in the world?

A) That’s super nice. It’s always lovely to hear that your music sits in the same realm as some of the songs that I’ve looked up to all my life. Pharrell’s “Happy” is a certified classic. You could even say it’s “goated with the sauce.” For people out there that don’t know what that means, it means it’s good. It’s a huge compliment and I can only hope that my music makes people feel the way I feel when I hear a great track.

Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?

A) At the moment I am releasing singles, but I hope by the end of the year I will have a full EP on the way. I’ll probably put out one more single and then the EP will shortly follow after that. So, lots more music and lots more exciting things on the horizon. That’s a promise!

Q) You have also done acting on stage and TV. Are you planning on doing more in the future?

A) Maaybbeee…

I’m always up for getting back into acting, but the reason I left in the first place. It’s just because you have to do so much waiting around and it’s hard to chase parts because that’s the job of your agent. A lot of acting is waiting for the phone to ring. With music I can have full control and drive what I’m doing. I determine how hard I’m pushing and chasing things. Plus, you love it and would not wanna do anything else at this point.

Q) What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?

A) I would just like to say a massive thank you. I often give a big shout out to all my family, friends and fans for just continuing the support. As a musician, what I do I can’t really do it without them. The fact that they stream the songs, come to gigs or just give me support day to day. It means the world to me.

So, thank you!
