Getters – We Are Getters

Q) How would you best describe your sound?

A) Our sound is a collection of what felt good to us in that moment. When this project was in its infancy there were no parameters set around what we wanted to sound like. Shoot, we did not even know at that time that this would become a band.  We would just bring up a blank session and explore a variety of sounds and vibes.  As we began gravitating to the songs that made the EP, it just so happened that we had fallen in the indie / alt-pop side of things.  I think we have set ourselves up to explore an even wider array of styles and it will still make sense.  Music industry vets say, “Pick a lane.”  We do not like following those type of directions.

Q) Who do you consider your Top 3 musical influences?

A) There are not three specific musical influences that impact the way we write or what we are trying to achieve ourselves, but instead let me give you three artists that I really, really like, listen to a lot lately and would LOVE to tour with: Kacey Musgraves, Cage the Elephant, & Third Eye Blind.

Q) Tell us a little more about the upcoming EP We Are Getters.

A) This EP is a collection of songs that quickly grew on the hearts and minds of those involved. What started with no vision has grown legs and is growing right before our very eyes. It is the first of many bodies of work and an exciting introduction to the world.  It has a little bit of this and a little bit of that.  I believe there is something for just about anyone or any mood.  At its core it is drums, bass, guitars and vocals with a little pizzazz sprinkled in.  Best enjoyed with a toe tap or head bob, in the car, with the windows down.

Q) You recently released a live version of “Row.” Why did you decide to create a live version of the song?

A) In all honesty, we had a timing issue with the animated video for our third single “Blindsided,” so we went back to the drawing board on what we could do to keep pumping out content. These days content is king, in the wake of the official “Row” video receiving such a great response, we decided to record it live and release it. It was a bit of a scrambling exercise, but it is always fun to test the limits of how fast we can move.  Challenge accepted; challenge accomplished.  Hope you enjoyed it!!

Q) Which was your favorite song to record and why?

A) My personal favorite track on the EP is the last song, “Prayer.” Our guitarist, Jerry [Nettles], received a voice memo via text with only an acoustic guitar and a vocal and he was so moved by it that he instantly opened a new session and built the song around the voice memo. I came in, added the drumbeat and toyed with the arrangement.  We never even put the song on the grid and synced it perfectly in time with a click track.  The original voice memo is still tucked in the mix.  For me, it is the most raw, heartfelt and intentional song on the EP.

Q) What do you hope fans take away from We Are Getters?

A) Connection, genuine connection. The three of us fell for these songs and we can only hope that fans do the same. There is not much better on earth than the mutual connection between an artist and their fans.  We are very eager to get out and play these songs live and feed off the energy of the crowd.

Q) How has creating We Are Getters helped you personally in getting through this pandemic?

A) This release means a lot to me and to all of us collectively. Personally, I had found myself working a 9 to 5, feeling uninspired and hoping that something would come along and break me out of the mundane existence I was living. Getters provided exactly that, a place to be creative, a space to dream, a breath of fresh air that has rejuvenated my mental health.

Q) Are there any plans to have a listening party or a live performance to celebrate We Are Getters after it is released on June 25th?

A) Certainly! We have some events booked for summer 2022 now but are turning focus to more near-term opportunities. You will start to see our calendar fill up closer to year end.

Q) With nearly two decades of friendship, how has that closeness benefited you during the process of writing and recording your debut album?

A) Jerry and I have been able to develop our friendship to an extraordinary level. We keep it real (sometimes too real) with each other, all the while maintaining a good amount of respect for each other. We have extremely high standards and even higher expectations, so we are always pushing each other to be our best selves.  We strive for the best we can be, build each other up and hold each other accountable when we fail.  Thing is, we are not afraid of failure.  In fact, we welcome it and use it as learning experiences / fuel to succeed the next time around.  Do not forget about Chris [Goodwin]…Jerry and I have each known and worked with him for nearly as long as we have been best friends.  He quickly learned how to fit in with us and is a complete pro when it comes to his contribution, both in the studio and performing live.

Q) What would you like to say to your fans and supporters of your music?

A) Welcome, take a look around. Take your shoes off, relax and stay a while. Let us go on a ride together.  We hope you enjoy the experience!
