Ghosts – Alberta’s Descendant
By: Jennifer Vintzileos
This week at Woodstone there is a new guest that arrives: Alicia Walker (Ashley D. Kelley). As Sam (Rose McIver) goes to check her in with Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones) and Alberta (Danielle Pinnock) making commentary, Alicia admits that she came to Woodstone because of Sam and her Alberta podcast. Alberta’s ears perk up at this, but even more so when Alicia tells Sam that Alberta is her great-grandmother’s sister. Eager to learn more about her family, Alberta begins throwing out questions to Sam, who is silently trying to figure out how to approach this Q&A.
In the kitchen Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky), Sasappis (Román Zaragoza), and Trevor (Asher Grodman) are watching over Jay’s (Utkarsh Ambudkar) bubbling pot of “secret ragout” when Nigel (John Hartmann) walks in. Upon hearing the word “secret”, Nigel alludes to Hetty and Trevor’s tryst, unbeknownst to Sasappis. Nigel and Sasappis leave the kitchen, giving the two horny non-lovebirds a chance to talk. Trevor seems unphased by Nigel’s threats, but Hetty is reluctant for their little dalliances to become public knowledge.
With questions finally ready to go, Sam and Jay sit with Alicia to ask her about herself, they find out that Alicia is a lawyer…this makes Alberta very proud. Although Alicia admits to being single, she is very interested in Alberta’s past and brings up a story of Alberta’s colorful history. Being a descendant and having knowledge of Alberta’s past, Jay suggests that Alicia do a podcast episode with Sam…and “Creepy” Todd (Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll). With the ghosts eager never to see Todd again, Sam still agrees to the podcast and gives him a call.
To find out what it will take to keep Nigel quiet, both Hetty and Trevor confront him in the library. In exchange for his silence, Nigel asks for Trevor to switch rooms with him. While Trevor is not on board with this agreement, Hetty asks for some time for them to think over Nigel’s proposal
Upon getting the call, Todd arrives with bells and whistles to Woodstone. But when he meets Alicia, the ghosts begin to notice that Todd and Alicia are flirting with one another…much to Alberta’s dismay. Alicia is “hot for Todd,” so to speak. Later, this sends Sam and the ghosts into discussion over Todd and Alicia’s budding flirtation. But Alberta barging into the discussion with knowledge Todd and Alicia’s dinner date plans causes a problem for Alberta and she pleads with Sam for her to stop them. Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long) suggests “cod-blocking” the couple, a term that he picked up from watching copious amounts of reality television. Pleading with Sam that this is her chance to be a parental figure since she never got to have children of her own, Sam agrees to help.
Meanwhile, Hetty and Trevor go to discuss the gameplan of what to do about Nigel. But Hetty has already made up her mind: Trevor needs to agree to the deal and give up his room. Trevor is confused as he thought Hetty has only been role-playing with him up until this point. But realizing that Hetty seems to be embarrassed by Trevor and wants to keep their relationship a secret indefinitely, Trevor breaks off their tryst and goes to talk to Nigel.
At dinner, Todd and Alicia seem to be hitting it off. Alicia is interested in Todd’s stories about being a historian while Alicia shares that she wishes she could pursue a career outside of law. Todd encourages Alicia to pursue her dreams, which pushes Alberta to plead for Sam to come in and wreck the date. Taking her cue, Sam immediately steps in and begins to tell Alicia about Todd’s Alberta tattoo, the toenail clipping he has, and his current residence/museum at his mother’s house. Todd tries to salvage the date, but the damage has been done: Alicia calls it off and Todd retreats to his room. Yet one part of their date remains: Alicia is now determined to make a go of her dream career of being a singer, which upsets Alberta.
Walking into the library, Hetty sees that Trevor has taken residence on the couch. Unable to convince Nigel to keep quiet, Trevor went through with the trade after all. When Hetty asks why, Trevor explains that he did for her…so she would not have to go through any embarrassment. Trevor then kicks her out of the library.
With Alicia’s law career on the line, Alberta is hysterical. However, Flower (Sheila Carrasco) questions why Alberta can’t be happy for Alicia’s choice. Pete (Richie Moriarty) and Thorfinn attempt to give Alberta parenting advice, which seems to fall a little flat.
Realizing what needs to be done, Hetty addresses the group and decides to come clean about her and Trevor….who is surprised that she is being open about it. As Hetty’s antiquated sexual euphemisms go over everyone’s heads, Trevor makes it clear that the two of them have been hooking up for three months. While Flower is curious about their third and Isaac applauds Hetty for finding her “stable boy,” Nigel realizes that the trade is off. On his way out, Hetty can’t help herself and gives Nigel one last dig before his departure to the library. Meanwhile, Trevor gives the group a play-by-play of how it started.
The next morning, Alicia gets ready to join Sam and Todd for their podcast. While Alberta is still trying to tell Sam to convince Alicia to stay in her career, she changes her tune when Alicia starts singing “Someone To Watch Over Me.” While the living only see Alicia singing, Alberta joins her descendant in singing the harmony for Sam and the ghosts to witness. Later with the podcast underway, a potential new clue to Alberta’s death is revealed: “T” may be Alberta’s sister Reese…short for Theresa.
