Ghosts – Weekend from Hell

The ghosts get comfortable in the sitting room for the Martino Family newsletter from Pete’s (Richie Moriarty) daughter, Laura. Deciding to help Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) feel more included in the group, Sam (Rose McIver) has Jay read the update out loud so they can find out if Pete’s grandson little Pete got the Spiderman retainer. While Jay reads the update, Hetty’s (Rebecca Wisocky) mentioning of hell seemingly coincides with a portal opening and her robber baron husband Elias (Matt Walsh) making a grand return. Out of hell on a 48-hour leave, Elias tries to assure Hetty and the rest of the ghosts that he is a changed man.

After abandoning the newsletter update, Jay heads to the kitchen to make lunch for their guests. Trevor (Asher Grodman) and Sasappis (Román Zaragoza) argue over Jay’s sauce as Jay turns and accidentally walks right through Flower (Sheila Carrasco). With Flower’s power being that anyone who walks through her will become stoned, Trevor, Sasappis and Flower decide to stay and watch what Jay will make for lunch.

Going on his grand apology tour, Elias tries to appeal to Hetty for forgiveness. Reluctantly, Hetty agrees if it means Elias will stop talking. With agreement in place, Elias produces a paper for Hetty to sign but upon further inspection from Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones)…it is a contract that would release Elias from hell and back within the confines of Woodstone. Knowing that Elias has not changed one bit, Hetty refuses to sign his contract.

Checking on Jay in the kitchen, Sam comes into the aftermath of Jay’s high from Flower. Jay does not even remember cooking lunch for the guests but is surprised when their guest Lily (Kimmy Choi) comes in to rave about the chicken dish that he made for lunch. Lily then mentions The Menu Hunter (Paola Della Marva), a critic that likes to feature great food on her platform and coincidentally a friend of Lily. Since Lily was impressed by the food she contacted her friend to come and try the chicken dish. With The Menu Hunter arriving in a few hours to taste Jay’s food, panic ensues when Jay cannot remember what he made. When Sam asks Trevor, Sasappis and Flower about Jay’s process, they are also unable to provide further information.

Curious about hell Isaac, Hetty, Pete, Alberta (Danielle Pinnock), and Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long) listen to Elias explain that hell is all fire, brimstone and Chumbawumba’s “Tubthumping” on repeat. Unfortunately, Sam breaks up the group chat by telling Pete she received another Martino newsletter with some bad news: little Pete is in the hospital in critical condition. Distraught by the thought of little Pete potentially dying, Pete mentions he would do anything to save his grandson. Elias offers an option: if Pete sells his soul to the devil, then little Pete will live. While the others try to advise Pete against this handshake deal, he doesn’t listen and agrees to the offer. It seems Elias has tricked Pete and the rest of the ghosts with a fake newsletter from the “boys downstairs”, all in a ploy to get Hetty to sign the forgiveness contract. If Hetty signs the contract, Pete can go free…but her reluctance is still firmly in place. With a little convincing from her friends, Hetty eventually agrees to sign the contract and save Pete.

Still struggling to remember the recipe, Jay is at his wits end. But Trevor has an idea: if Jay were to get back into the same mindset that he was in during the preparation of lunch, he could remember how to make the dish. Sam explains to Jay that he will need to have Flower go through him once more, something that Flower is more than happy to do to help Jay. However, this hit of Flower manages to only make Jay more stoned and not inspire him like last time.

When Hetty goes to sign the forgiveness contract, another issue arises when the pen does not work. While Elias shows that the pen works, Isaac reads the contract once more and the terms of Hetty’s forgiveness must be sincere. Hetty continues to state forgiveness, yet the pen refuses to work. Isaac proposes that Elias will have to give his own sincere apology tour to Hetty this time.

Elias puts his all into apologizing to Hetty, from admitting that he framed one of their workers for missing dishes to stealing Hetty’s drugs. Seeing that Hetty may not forgive Elias, Pete asks Thorfinn for some self-defense tips. Eventually, the truth of Hetty’s reluctance comes to light: if Elias is set free from hell, he gets to be happy and that is the last thing that Hetty wants. Alberta reminds Hetty that she also gets to be happy and in forgiving Elias she sets herself free from it all. Taking Alberta’s words to heart, Hetty takes the contract and is finally able to sign it. The ghosts rejoice, yet Elias promises to wreak havoc once more. Fortunately, Sam tells Elias that Thorfinn will throw him back into the vault if Elias tries to pull any funny business. With the Elias issue settled, Sasappis comes running in to bring Sam to the kitchen.

Sam comes into the kitchen to find a frantic Jay trying to get another hit off of Flower. Jay admits that moving to a small town and having the spotlight on him for his cooking has him doubting his skills. Sam assures Jay with a reminder that everything he needs is inside of him, he just needs to believe in his own skills. Later that day, The Menu Hunter aka Susan arrives and Jay presents her with a brand new dish to try. As Susan digs into her lamb chops, Elias comes in the dining room to announce that he will be returning to hell rather than be stuck being nice all the time. In one last act of defiance, he walks through Susan as she eats. With Susan, the horny essence that Elias leaves on her causes her to get a little freaky while eating her lamb chops.

With the time for Elias to depart now at hand, the portal opens and Chumbawumba’s “Tubthumping” can be heard. Offering to make amends for his behavior, Elias tries to offer Pete another handshake…which Pete accepts. However, Elias has deceived Pete again as he tells him that he will be going to hell with him. But with Thorfinn’s encouragement to remember his training, Pete uses the self-defense skills that Thorfinn shared with him and Elias is finally sent back to hell. As Pete swears his saw his Uncle Sal through the portal, Trevor starts singing “Tubthumping” quietly.
