Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The title says it all. This epic monster makes his way back to the box office and he’s ready to take on fellow iconic creatures Rodan, Mothra and Ghidora. If you were a fan of the recent Godzilla remake, this one will certainly be enjoyed. However, you don’t have to have followed him over the years to find yourself applauding this latest feature film.

From 1954 to now, we’ve followed Godzilla’s trials and tribulations. Here we pick up with Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) having created something called “The Orca.” The invention allows people to communicate with monsters and, hopefully, be able to control their behavior. Unfortunately, Dr. Russell’s daughter Madison (Millie Bobbie Brown) is less than thrilled with her mother’s invention and is still reeling from losing her brother in Godzilla’s previous battle. Plus, Mark (Kyle Chandler), Madison’s father and Dr. Russell’s ex-hubby, is drowning his own sorrows in booze. Yes, as you can see half of the plot to this movie is a little convoluted.

What the storyline comes down to is a battle between those who think they can live in peace with the monsters (Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins) and those who want to rid the world of these bad beasts (Charles Dance). However, does it really matter? We’re here to see these monsters make mincemeat of one another, which was – honestly – the best part of the movie.

Director Michael Dougherty (Krampus) is at the helm of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Of course, the cinematography and make this a standout motion picture. Unfortunately, neither of these aspects can carry a film with not enough intrigue and plotline.

The story of man vs. beast is a tale as old as time. So, if you’re looking for a movie that has a through-line that captivates and keeps you on your toes, then pass this one up. Otherwise, come for monsters and stay for the wake of their destruction.
