How To Get Away With Murder – Be the Martyr
By: Dustin Bradley
We open the episode with Nate (Billy Brown) in an FBI questioning telling the agents that they should be looking at the Governor as the main suspect In Miller’s disappearance. We then flashback to 24 hours earlier where Bonnie (Liza Weil) shows him and Annalise (Viola Davis) the phone call Miller made to the warden on the day that Nate Sr. was shot. Bonnie thinks that they may have killed an innocent man, but Nate fully believes that Miller had to have been working for the Governor and was covering up his involvement with the shooting. He knows that Annalise and Bonnie may not be on his side at the moment so he takes it upon himself to make sure that he is correct and looks into Miller’s involvement into his father’s shooting. He finds out that Miller or someone slipped the jury at the inquest a document saying that the DNA found on the gun involved in the shooting was Nate Sr.’s and not the guards, but Nate (of course) knows that this must be a cover up. This is what leads him to the interview at the beginning of the episode. He reveals in that interview that he may seem like a suspect, but they should be looking at the Governor because he has a motive and he may have evidence his father’s case was tampered with. He submits to a DNA test to determine if it could even possibly be his father’s prints on the weapon in question.
Before Bonnie leaves Annalise’s apartment, Annalise expresses her worry that Bonnie might hurt herself or that all this stress may cause Annalise to spiral so Bonnie needs to take care of herself and be careful. But Bon-Bon insists she’s fine. It doesn’t matter though because Annalise calls Asher (Matt McGorry) in as reinforcements to keep a close eye on Bonnie at work and to protect his former lady love. He then informs her that Bonnie isn’t the only problem because the other members of the Keating Five know the truth.
Of course, Annalise has to handle this immediately as soon as she gets to the office and informs Michaela (Aja Naomi King), Connor (Jack Falahee) and Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) that everything is under control and they all need to keep their mouths shut including Laurel (Karla Souza) who is missing from their little meeting. And that’s because Laurel is too busy attacking Bonnie in the parking garage at the DA’s office for her exposing baby Christoph to the heinous act that occurred and is worried that he will be scarred for life. Asher has to step in and try and calm Laurel down since this isn’t the place to have this conversation and that she needs to be nicer to Bonnie since she is grieving a big love and stressing out just as much. Bonnie is just mad that Asher told them at all, although he is assures her that they were figuring it out anyway.
To make things worse for Annalise, she also has to deal with Emmett (Timothy Hutton) and the fact that his misconduct case is catching up to them at Kaplan & Gold. His hearing is tomorrow and one of the big bosses wants him to lie to the board and claim that he knew what he was doing the whole time. But neither him, Annalise nor the woman he fell in love with/“victim” of his misconduct Nora (Louise Lombard) want him to admit fault. So, instead they all agree to blackmail the honco who brought on the case and get him to take the fall, which he does so hopefully no more Emmett drama this season and he can just be a nice ally to Annalise.
Bonnie as I mentioned earlier is devastated now even more than ever since she’s learned that Miller was most likely innocent. She didn’t head Annalise’s advice and after work attempts to kill herself in her car by carbon monoxide poisoning, but lucky Frank (Charlie Weber) is there to save her and pull her out of the car. Later on in the night he searches for her again in a heartbreaking scene where he checks areas in the house thinking he will find her dead or injured but instead it turns out she is in his room and before he lays down to cuddle with her. He calls Nate to get him to stop all this before something horrible happens to her.
Before we get to the other main plot line in the episode let’s talk about a few things that happened along the way including Michaela revealing to Laurel that when she was years old she watched her birth mother get shot and murdered, but that she doesn’t really remember any of it. She has only heard the stories about it being true, so she’s sure that Christoph will be okay. We also get Tegan (Amirah Vann) attempting to steal the Nate civil case from Annalise, but she eventually gets suspicious after hearing two different stories from the kids and Annalise herself. So, she makes a call to none other than… Special Agent Claire Telesco (Melinda Paige Hamilton) – also known as the agent she dealt with as the Antres whistleblower and who happens to be running the Miller case. She leaves her a voicemail saying that they need to talk but she’s a little busy right now.
What has Agent Telesco been busy with? That would be Gabe (Rome Flynn) who she calls in for questioning about his voicemail to Miller a few episodes ago. He tells her that he was working with Miller on those Denver files that Bonnie was sure Miller wasn’t looking into. It turns out he was and that maybe why Gabriel came here to begin with. Or perhaps Gabriel is here because the Governor sent him in order to ruin Annalise? Either way it wasn’t on his own like he told everyone, unless it is and he’s playing everyone in order to get the truth about Sam’s death.
At the end of the episode Nate gets called back to the FBI where they give him the results of the DNA results and they are not a match so parts of his theories may be correct and the FBI has someone in custody who maybe able to shed some light on this break in the case…. Gabriel. Of course, Gabriel calls Annalise in to help him out of this mess.
