Jordyn Curet – Home Economics
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) What is new this season of “Home Economics?”
A) With the first season we were getting to know the Hayworth family, who they are and how they got to the place in life they are at. With the second season we are now getting to see more of their family dynamics in different situations and following their journey. This also means we are seeing more of Shamiah growing up a bit and how her moms are navigating those changes, which I love! This season also has more guest stars and we have been working on location more such as our season premiere at Levi’s Stadium.
Q) How was your character Shamiah originally described to you?
A) Shamiah was described to me as a sweet and socially conscious pre-teen. She loves her family, especially her moms. She is also into TikTok, musical theater and loves Lizzo and the Hamilton The writers have really stuck to the original description, and I love when I’m reading my script for an episode and learn something new about her.
Q) What made you want to be a part of the show?
A) I really liked how relevant the show is to today’s families. The family structures are more reflective of people we know in our communities and there are stories that everyone can relate to whether it is raising children, relationship struggles, financial problems, etc. Then, it’s all rolled together in a way to also make people forget about their problems and spend a half hour laughing each week. Next, the backbone of the show is family, everything is about family and how we interact, support each other and handle differences. I also found Shamiah to have a lot of characteristics as I do and felt really comfortable bringing her character to life.
Q) You play a part of quite an extended family on the show. Who were you looking forward to sharing a scene with?
A) The entire cast is incredible to work with, and I learn so much from my moms played by Caitlin McGee and Sasheer Zamata. In season two, though, Shamiah has had more scenes with Uncle Connor played by Jimmy Tatro and I have really been enjoying expanding their relationship on screen. Behind the scenes, we crack up a lot working together. He is such a talented actor.
Q) I’m sure it is difficult keeping a straight face with so many comedic costars. Who has the most trouble keeping it together?
A) One thing about working on a comedy is there is a lot of laughter behind the scenes too. It really depends on the scene as to who has trouble keeping it together when filming, we have all had our moments. I think viewers would probably be most surprised to know that yes…Lidia Porto who plays Lupe does laugh when the cameras aren’t rolling! Her character is always so serious, almost secretly judging everyone in the family and their antics, but she is a lot of fun in real life.
Q) This is such a sweet series. What are some standout episodes from Season 2 that you are excited for fans to see?
A) I really loved the first episode of the new season. Shamiah got the opportunity to challenge some of the parental opinions she has grown up with and show her moms she is her own person and does not always see things the way they do. It led to some great moments between them…and, of course, this all goes down at a football game! I cannot wait for everyone to see the Halloween episode this season as well – talk about epic! There’s some great stuff coming up, so be sure to tune in.
Q) You are a part of social media. Do you enjoy the instant fan feedback you receive to episodes?
A) Yes, social media has been a fantastic way to learn how fans connect with the show and us as actors. There is this element of immediate feedback that you get and it adds a whole new level to being a part of a show. I can be busy doing homework or on my way home from set and I know that the east coast is seeing this week’s episode as my phone will start sending off alerts. It makes my heart happy both as an individual and a professional to know people are tuned right into our show. It is a good family comedy, something that we are really wanting these days, and I always love to see how the fans relate with a scene or a phrase. Our fans are awesome! Thank you for tuning in.
Q) What do you think it is about “Home Economics” that has made it such a fan favorite show?
A) I feel the show is such a fan favorite because somewhere we can all relate to the Hayworth family. We see pieces of ourselves in the characters, as well as our own relatives, friends, neighbors…and the storylines are made up of things that families go through. You can watch an episode and be reminded of something that has happened in your own life or laugh while thinking about how someone you know would handle this situation. Families have their differences and the Hayworth’s are no exception, but in the end, family is everything.
Q) What are the other projects you have recently been working on?
A) I have been working on a cool voice over project that will hopefully release early this year. I also love music and have been busy writing, I am hoping to release another song soon.
