WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Anxiety Boys is a comedy mockumentary about an aspiring music manager who thinks he’s on the verge of his big break, only to learn dreams don’t come true so easily. When Andrew (Andrew Hurt) gets the opportunity to represent the hot new upcoming artist Xanne Hathaway (played by creator Ben Ball), he dramatically quits his job to pursue his passion. Unfortunately, Andrew quickly learns Xanne is less of a talented up and comer and more of a hopeless wannabe rapper. With a camera crew recording their every move, Andrew has his work cut out for him if he expects to turn a mumble rapper with a vocabulary problem into a legitimate star.

From start to finish, Anxiety Boys is an enjoyable experience. It felt like the perfect marriage between a Seth Rogen/Pete Davidson comedy sketch and a MTV reality show. I was on board almost right away, but what really sold me on the series was the final few minutes of the pilot episode. In an effort to appear more authentic, instead of just not rapping about getting shot, Xanne goes for the more nuclear option. The scene is great with snow falling down, everyone screaming and Xanne begging Andrew to shoot him in the leg. And somehow, despite how crazy the ordeal seemed, I could genuinely picture an aspiring performer in that very situation.

Hurt does an amazing job of playing the straight-man comedy trope against Ball’s more eccentric role, forming the perfect odd couple. Their chemistry and the way they play off one another, while somehow keeping a straight face through the hilarity, is definitely a huge reason why the show is so entertaining.

Anxiety Boys is oddly relatable, with surprising heart I wasn’t expecting. This is a web series that can appeal to anyone. If you’re a comedy fan, love the music industry or you like the mockumentary style, you’ll find a lot to like about it. It’s as creative as it is zany and you’ll have “The Dumpy Walk” stuck in your head for hours. The six episode first season was wonderful and I hope Haunted Wifi plans on getting the gang back together for season two soon.
