Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) Swampy Soulful Summer Snow

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) Miles Davis, John Frusciante, Harry Belafonte

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “In Lieu Of.”

A) An apocalyptic love song for the apocalypse

Q) What is your songwriting process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) There’s really no method to the madness. I just open myself to the songs and they arrive. Usually, like little puzzle pieces. Sometimes fully formed, but usually they reveal themselves slowly like a striptease.

Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) I produce it all, kinda by default. I’ve worked with other producers in the past, but this current album I did all on my lonesome.

Q) What can fans expect from a live Kail Baxley performance?

A) Laugh, Cry, Dance, Repeat.

Q) What are some themes you explore on your LP Beneath the Bones

A) The universal themes of humanity, I suppose. I reflect on life through my own lens. We all have a lens and are looking at similar things from a slightly different angle, so unsurprisingly most topics are relatable.

Q) What songs off your LP have you been enjoying performing live?

A) They all have their place really and they all have their moments depending on the mood of the room. It’s a social experiment every time and it makes it really fun. “Born in the Flood” has gotten an incredible response as a stand out I’d say though.

Q) What do you hope listeners take away from listening to your new LP as a whole?

A) That the entire system breaks down without the bees. Protect the bees.

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) It’s more of a crowd than a place. I wanna play for people that wanna be played to and join in with the vibe of the whole experience. I’ve played in abandoned gas stations in forgotten little towns that were more spectacular than some renowned concert halls in major cities because the people made it special.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) It’d be cool if Zoe Kravitz was just in the room and the whole collaboration would just be the grace of her presence. And obviously the RZA.

Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) Khruangbin is what I been fuckin’ with lately. It’s like Neapolitan Ice Cream.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) Let’s make this an us thing. Ain’t no me without us, so let’s take it to the top Johnny…
