Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) and Josie (Kaylee Bryant) are on a spaceship and they’re being attacked by a figure who looks like Darth Vader. Lizzie tells Josie they have to get out of here. Josie questions if they’re still high. Lizzie says it doesn’t matter because Lord Marshall is coming for them. Josie, who is an android, teleports them off the ship and onto another planet. In this reality Lizzie is “Princess Elizabeth Saltzstar” and Josie is her android sister. They start debating why Josie isn’t a princess too until they’re interrupted by Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) who is a scavenger.

Its MG’s (Quincy Fouse) first day back at the Salvatore School and he’s welcomed with open arms. Everyone is thrilled to see him, except for Kaleb (Chris Lee) and Jed (Ben Levin). MG wants to hang out, but Kaleb doesn’t want to talk. And he’s cleared out all of MG’s stuff.

Back wherever the girls are, they’re trying to understand what’s happened. Hope says the last thing she remembers is when they were pandas. Lizzie thinks whatever is happening is a side-effect of the stuff Andie threw on them. Josie’s android archives tells them that shared hallucinations can be common after consuming nightshade (the drug), but sometimes it can lead to spiritual enlightenment. The girls are on a vision quest, so they have to complete the quest and they’ll be back to their reality. But how will they know where to go? There’s a hologram message from Alaric (Matt Davis). He said he’s searching for a weapon that could defeat Lord Marshall. They decide to go find him.

Alaric notices the distance between MG and Kaleb. So, he calls Kaleb to his office and gets him to agree to an assignment in the woods. Only after Kaleb says yes does he reveal that he and MG will be working together. Kaleb is less than thrilled to see MG appear in Ric’s office.

The girls go to a bar and a creature demands a password. They’re threatened with being shot if they don’t give the right password. Lizzie gives the password and they’re allowed inside. Josie and Lizzie are really confused. They want to know how Lizzie knew that. Lizzie says she knew the answer because wrote this story when she was eleven years old.

Alaric sends the boys in the woods to bury Wendigo’s body. MG wants to take this time to talk, but Kaleb is still giving him the cold shoulder. Kaleb tells him to just dig so they can leave. MG asks if he’s angry with him and Kaleb doesn’t want to talk. MG suggests that if he’s not angry then they should camp out, just the two of them. Kaleb nixes just the two of them because he invited Jed.

The girls meet a Han Solo wannabe played by Ethan (Leo Howard) in Lizzie’s fantasy. According to Ethan, the sisters hired him to find their father, but he came up short. Almost. There’s a hermit he thinks might be their father. This conversation is cut short because ninjas attack. Josie asked why Lizzie wrote ninjas into a space story. She was eleven years old, Lizzie reminds her. Not!Ethan promises to hold off the ninjas so the girls can escape. Lizzie kisses him and says he was everything she dreamed of.

Ric goes to visit a healing Dorian (Demetrius Bridges) in the hospital. He brought him french fries and wants to apologize for how banged up Dorian got. Dorian starts to tell him it’s no problem, but then flips the script. He begins talking about how it was his student who went on a ripper bender and Alaric pressured him into helping him out. Alaric is confused but then it makes sense when he sees Emma (Karen David) behind him. Dorian doesn’t want her to know he’s been working with Ric again.

Speaking of Ric, this part of Lizzie’s story revolves around some abandonment issues. Ric Saltzstar left Josie and Lizzie to find the Starsword, but he gave up and is pretty disillusioned. In the middle of Ric explaining his absence Josie remembers something. She abruptly stands and tells Hope and Lizzie they’ve got to leave. She says that she remembers that they’ve had the Starsword the whole time.

Lizzie wants to know how she knows that. Josie admits to reading her diary. Lizzie was starting to have episodes but wasn’t diagnosed as being Bipolar yet so Josie read her diary. She felt like she was keeping an eye on her. Lizzie is furious. However, Hope says this will make getting out of the story easier. Plus, since Lizzie probably made herself the chosen one who can wield the Starsword, this will end soon. They’re interrupted by ninjas attacking.

Lizzie tries to activate the sword, but it doesn’t work. She’s a little annoyed that even in her story Hope’s the hero and passes her the sword. But it doesn’t work for her either. The ninjas capture them. And it turns out that Alaric betrayed them and is now working for Lord Marshall.

While the girls are chained up, they talk more about the story. Hope wonders why Lizzie would have Alaric betray them. Lizzie explains she was going through a lot. She didn’t understand why she was having episodes and felt like Alaric was always neglecting them for Hope. And she reveals that Hope was Lord Marshall, the villain in her story.

At the hospital Emma is tearing into Alaric for endangering Dorian. Emma says that Ric has a pattern. He’s attracted to high-risk situations, and he drags anyone who cares for him along for the ride. Alaric defends himself and says that Dorian offered his help, and he was bored behind the desk. Before she can respond they hear an announcement that Dorian is going into distress. When they get to his room the wound has opened again. Alaric tells Emma the truth about the Wendigo and says if Dorian isn’t healing it’s not as dead as they thought.

In the woods Kaleb and MG have it out. MG says that Kaleb doesn’t even like Jed, and he only invited them to spite him. Kaleb says that a lot changed when he was gone. MG asks if Kaleb’s angry that he left, but Kaleb says it’s not that he left but what he did while he was away. He says it was reckless and could’ve exposed them all. MG reminds him that they used to stay up at night and talk about using their powers to help people. He says that unlike Kaleb, he wasn’t comfortable being Switzerland. Kaleb speeds off and MG chases him. But the fighting stops when they notice the grave that they just dug is empty.

Hope says she gets why if Lizzie’s 11-year-old self wrote a story she’d be the villain. Lizzie explains that when she was eleven, she didn’t understand her episodes yet and it was a few years after Hope came to the school. Josie and Lizzie felt like she hated them, and Alaric seemed to bend over backwards for her. It made Lizzie feel invisible. Hope apologizes to them, but Josie admits they didn’t know what Hope was going through either. In the meantime, they need to know who’s in the armor. Lizzie doesn’t know. She explains that she got frustrated she couldn’t make herself the chosen one in her own story and stopped writing. She thinks they’ll be stuck there forever. But then a younger version of Hope (Summer Fontana) drops from the ceiling and says she’s here to rescue them.

More backstory: Josie told some of her classmates about Lizzie’s story and Hope being the villain. Hope overheard and had a meltdown in the woods and set them on fire. Emma found her and told her to write her own story where she could be the good guy and the twins could be her friend. In younger Hope’s story the bad guy is the Hollow.

In the woods the boys are trying to figure out what’s happening. Kaleb thinks there never was a wendigo and Alaric just created a ruse to force them to get along. But MG doesn’t think Alaric would be so manipulative. Kaleb points out that he hasn’t always been forthcoming. He says he’s over it and leaves.

The girls talk more about the Hollow. Little Hope explains that it possessed her and made her do horrible things. She says that once the Hollow is defeated her parents will come back for her and she and the twins can be best friends. Older Hope tells her that’s not how the story ends. She says the monster might not be her old worst fear, but her new fear. The younger version of Hope is starting to get upset and says she doesn’t want to talk anymore. Older Hope says that’s okay, because she’s done talking. She puts everyone under a sleep spell and heads off on her own.

The Saltzman twins and young Hope are following Hope to Salvatore Castle. Young Hope tells them it’ll take two days to get there on foot. But then General Saltzstar drives up in his car and says he’s had a change of heart. Lizzie comments that, of course, their father would be the hero in Hope’s story.

Kaleb is preparing to go when he’s stopped by MG. MG says Kaleb was right about everything. He says they never would’ve been in such a bad place if he hadn’t left. He’s ready to leave with Kaleb. Kaleb points out Jed hasn’t caught up yet. MG says he’ll be fine walking. Kaleb offers MG the keys and then shows him. Kaleb says the real MG would never leave someone, even someone he disliked stranded in the woods.

Hope reaches her destination. She sees the sword and grabs it, but she’s confronted by Lord Marshall (Douglas Tait).  She prepares to fight.

Fun fact about wendigos: if they’re weak they’ll take human form to find an easy snack. The real MG stumbles upon Kaleb fighting the fake MG. Then, Jed comes on the scene. The two MGs struggle until the real MG sets the wendigo on fire. It seems the first death didn’t take because they didn’t use fire.

Hope fights with Lord Marshall. She says she knows what Lord Marshall is and she’s stronger. Hope drives her sword through its chest. The girls arrive and little Hope says she killed the Hollow. But that wasn’t the big bad in this story: it’s Malivore. She says she finally understands what needs to be done – she has to become the Tribrid.

The boys are roasting marshmallows over the wendigo’s bodies when MG and Kaleb have a heart to heart. Kaleb says he always looks out for MG because he knows he’ll do big things. He just assumed he’d be the one with him when that happens. MG says it still can be. He says this was their first mission and they crushed it. Then, the two boys share a hug, which Jed joins.

Emma and Alaric mend fences, too. Emma apologizes for being so harsh. Alaric admits he does get involved in danger and drag people along, but he has to stay in the supernatural world to be in his daughters’ lives. He does promise to keep his distance from Dorian if that’s what she wants. But Emma points out that she’ll always be a witch, so Dorian will always have a foot in the supernatural world. She has to let Dorian make his own choices.

Back at the compound the girls talk about what they learned. Josie says that maybe her fate isn’t sealed. Hope says her fate has been sealed since the moment she was born. She admits she’s been afraid to become a Tribred because she’s been scared that she’ll be stuck in that trauma forever. But, Hope says, she’s stuck with it either way. Lizzie says she’s sorry she couldn’t see how much pain she was in back then. She points out that she and Josie have grown so Hope can too. Hope says that she feels guilty every time a monster from Malivore comes because she knows she can stop it. Josie; however, reminds her she only became a Tribrid because she faced Malivore alone, they won’t let that happen.

The heart to heart is interrupted by the girls realizing they’re not alone. At first, they think Andie didn’t die after all. But the footprints are too large to be hers. They follow the footprints and they turn out to belong to Ryan Clarke (Nick Fink).
