The episode opens up with a flashback to Germany Circa 1933. A couple hurriedly leaves and a group bursts through the door. The trench coat clad men are armed and among them is Ryan Clarke (Nick Fink). He tells the men to nix the guns. They’re instructed to find “it” and start ransacking the house. Ryan says they have to find it before “de Fehrer” (which means the leader in German) beats them to it.

In the present Alaric (Matt Davis) is giving the students a history lesson. Speaking of that, he tries to get Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) up to speed on the many things that have happened since he sort of died. The agenda today is understanding where all the new monsters are coming from. Best bet is that Malivore wants out of the prison world to follow through on making Landon his vessel.  Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) insists that isn’t going to happen.

Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) is still annoyed about collateral damage that came from the attempts to save Landon. Alaric tries to change the subject to Cleo’s (Omono Okojie) summoning abilities and Kaleb thinks she should be a part of the super squad. The motion passes and Alaric would like to explore the possibility of Cleo summoning a harmless monster that could assist him. In the meantime, he’s going to Mystic Falls High School for the day.

Speaking of Mystic Falls High, MG (Quincy Fouse) has enrolled there. At lunch with Josie (Kaylee Bryant) they talk about wanting to fit in. Josie warns MG to stay under the radar and nix using his vampire powers in public. If anyone figured out they weren’t totally human, Josie says, her dad would make them go back to The Salvatore School. Ethan (Leo Howard) joins them and reveals that he’s been kicked off the football team. MG is thinking of trying out. There’s an awkward silence after that.

Kaleb (Chris Lee) and Lizzie talk strategy and disagree. Lizzie doesn’t want to work with Hope. Kaleb reminds her that Alaric insisted this be a group effort and the last time they ignored his wishes the leprechaun went on a rampage. Lizzie persists that her idea was better than Hope’s and she blames Hope for MG leaving. Kaleb tells her she played a part in that, too. Lizzie breaks the news that MG isn’t temporarily gone as he enrolled at Mystic Falls High. Kaleb says Josie is his only friend there, so he’ll sulk a little and be back in no time. For now, he’d like to summon a pixie as they grant wishes in exchange for favors.

Landon and Hope talk about what happened between her and Lizzie. She knows Lizzie is angry that she pressured Josie into taking her power back, but it never actually happened so she shouldn’t get so bent out of shape. Landon thinks she should reach out to Lizzie as they have a lot in common and he points out that if the situations were reversed Hope would react the same way. Hope doesn’t want to budge but is given an idea. Since she and Lizzie are alike she guesses Lizzie’s next move.

Lizzie recruited Cleo to summon a pixie. Hope thinks it’s a bad idea. This leads to another argument which is interrupted by Cleo. She says there’s no need for her to summon a monster because the monster is already here. There’s a little pink gremlin in the corner. The girls think it’s cute and want to keep it as a pet, but the gremlin (Douglas Tait) isn’t as innocent as it looks and starts wrecking things before making a run for it.

Hope and Lizzie chase after the gremlin and continue to argue. They follow it out to the pool and while disagreeing over how to catch it, the gremlin pushes Lizzie into the pool. But Lizzie blames Hope. Lizzie says that at least when she’s bitchy she owns it and tells Hope to stay out of her way because people get hurt when she doesn’t.

Alaric has a meeting with Dorian (Demetrius Bridges). He wants to know if the artifact Hope wished on when Landon was “dead” is the cause of the new Malivore portal. Dorian is happy to see Ric, but points out they could’ve had this talk over the phone. He’s right. Alaric wants to check on Josie. Dorian says he can be a substitute and hang out for the day.

Subbing as the gym teacher, Alaric’s presence annoys Josie. MG says it could be a coincidence but Josie dislikes being spied on. She tells MG not to give her father anything to spy on and not use his vampire abilities.

Landon presses Hope to make amends with Lizzie. Hope says it’s not an option. Landon asserts again that she should apologize. Hope explains she can’t apologize for something she knows she’d do again. If she’d worked with Lizzie before, he points out, they could’ve found a painless solution. They’re interrupted by an announcement. The gremlin posing as Lizzie makes an announcement about Hope being the threat to the school.

In gym class a football player named Blake (Antonio C. Davis) taunts Ethan about losing his quarterback position. Ethan responds that they can’t all be benchwarmers like him and walks away. They fight when Blake accuses him of bailing on his family. Ric breaks up the fight and sends the other kids to run laps. He kicks one of the balls into the street and Alaric sends him to retrieve it. Unfortunately, this leads to him nearly getting hit by a truck. MG vamp speeds over and saves him from being roadkill. But now they’ve got some explaining to do.

Lizzie and Hope have another argument. Hope is angry about the announcement, but Lizzie is annoyed. She was in the shower, so no matter how much she might agree it couldn’t have been her. Hope doesn’t believe her and points out she’s saved the school multiple times. Lizzie says Hope only wants anything to do with the school when she wants something. Hope blames Lizzie for Josie going dark. Landon and Cleo interject. Cleo says they should believe each other and look for an explanation where they’re both telling the truth. Kaleb enters and shares the gremlin was in Alaric’s office and is carrying a fur. At first they think he killed the gremlin but it’s molting.

So, gremlins feed on disrespect. The more animosity there is, the more it’ll grow. Lizzie suggests they use Landon to trap it which makes Hope angry. But Landon is on board. He says since Malivore wants him he’s the perfect bait and things will only go sideways if Lizzie and Hope can’t work together. Kaleb runs in and informs them that the gremlin kidnapped Cleo. Landon wasn’t the target afterall.

Josie, Alaric and MG talk about what to do about Ethan inside the school. Alaric wants to compel Ethan’s memories away. Josie agrees, but MG feels like they’re prioritizing their needs over Ethan’s. Ethan interjects and says he’d like to keep his memories. He thinks it’s cool that MG has superpowers as they’re the reason he’s not dead. But Alaric insists on compulsion. Only when MG tries it doesn’t work. They realize that Ethan’smother might’ve told him about vervain.

The group gears up for a rescue mission. Lizzie points out they don’t really know how to fight a gremlin. Landon volunteers to stay at school because for once he doesn’t need protection. And he goes on to say that if they keep doing things the way they’ve been doing them Cleo is toast. So, Lizzie, Hope and Kaleb leave.

Ethan’s mother has been sending him vervain supplements. If he took one today in a few hours it should pass out of his system and he’ll be compellable again. Josie and Alaric leave for a father/daughter chat. Ethan says there’s no reason not to tell how about his origin story since they’ll wipe his memory later. At first MG isn’t going for it, but is charmed once he learns that Ethan’s a comic book buff too.

Kaleb, Hope and Lizzie go to a field and Kaleb realizes that Cleo is tied up in a well. Lizzie thinks this is too easy. Why would the gremlin take Cleo just to make her this easy to rescue? She’s proven right when they turn around to find a much larger version of the monster calling them fools. Landon comes to the field and realizes that if disrespect feeds the monster, respect weakens it.

So, MG tells Ethan he’s a vampire. MG says it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Ethan thinks his powers sound cool, except his parents rejecting him. He says his mother has always been incredibly supportive, which is why he doesn’t know how to tell her he was cut from the team. He doesn’t know who he is without the football team. He then asks MG how he’s going to use his vampire abilities for good.

Hope and Lizzie have to try to come to a place of mutual respect. While they do that Kaleb is distracting the monster and Landon is trying to get Cleo out of the well. Hope and Lizzie’s attempts are pretty shallow and Landon says they have to come to a place of genuine understanding or they’re all going to die. Hope says she didn’t mean to hurt Josie, but Lizzie feels like that doesn’t matter because she still could’ve died. Hope says she honestly didn’t know what else to do. Lizzie admits that the way she puts Landon first is sort of what she and Josie do. Hope acknowledges that Lizzie has grown a lot and she wishes she could be as proactive in being a better person.

It seems to be working because the monster is shrinking. With Landon’s help Hope and Lizzie pull Cleo from the well. Lizzie also apologizes for being so cold to Cleo and officially welcomes her to the school. The gremlin is now small and furry again.  The gang have a quick discussion about the creature’s fate. They could keep it in a jar as a pet, but considering how much drama there is at the school the odds are it would become twenty feet tall again. With that said, Hope squashes it.

Landon and Hope talk about everything that’s happened. Landon tells Hope that he really appreciates everything she did to save him, but he can’t be her everything. Furthermore, Landon says that Hope shouldn’t keep caring about him at their friends’ expense. He shares that she’ll always have him. With that said, Hope says there’s something she needs to do.

Alaric takes Josie to the Gilbert house. He’s not going to make her come back to The Salvatore School. He wishes she hadn’t been willing to use dark magic, but he gets that she was just trying to make up for a past mistake. And he’s working on backing off a little. Josie says he doesn’t want him to back off completely. She asks him to stay for dinner and for some relationship advice. He agrees.

Kaleb and Cleo take a walk through the town. He wants to stargaze and check on MG. He can’t bare the thought of MG all alone and wants to patch things up. But when they get to the football field MG and Ethan are laughing and tossing the football around. MG’s not as lost without him as Kaleb thought he’d be. Also, it turns out that MG opted to let Ethan keep his memories. But it’s going to be their secret.

Hope finds Lizzie looking for the portal. Hope offers to help and invites Lizzie to a movie night. Lizzie’s still a little sad because Hope got what she wanted but Lizzie still doesn’t have Josie. Hope hugs Lizzie and she agrees to the movie night. They hope that maybe this is it for Malivore monsters. But as they walk awake a skeleton figure watches them from the trees.
