We start with breakfast in bed. It’s Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) and Hope’s (Daniel Rose Russell) one year anniversary and Landon brings her pancakes. He has big, romantic plans to commemorate the occasion. Also, she vows her singing in public was a one time thing. But they’re both excited for where the night could take them.

Josie (Kaylee Bryant) is interviewing Ethan (Leo Howard) at the local high school. She’s doing a story for the Salvatore School’s paper about the day in the life of a Timberwolf. Remember that time Josie broke Ethan’s arm at the annual tag football game? He says he’s just happy for a shot at publicity. All your college scholarships go away when you bust your throwing arm. Josie apologizes, but Ethan says it’s not her fault. If only he knew. He tells her to tell Alaric (Matt Davis) he sucks for ghosting them. The new principal is kind of a dictator. Also, they have similar feelings about his mother, Sheriff Mac (Bianca Kajlich) and her father dating.

On her way back to the school Josie witnesses a disturbing scene. The Necromancer (Ben Geurens) was in a classroom pouring blood on the floor to prepare for a ritual. He’s scolded for this by a very confused principal, who he quickly kills. The more human blood to spill the better. Josie, still without her magic, goes running to Alaric to tell him the news.

The good news is MG (Quincy Fouse) isn’t dead. However, he is in quite the predicament. Alyssa (Olivia Liang) has him tied up and seems to have no plans to free him. He tries to make her see reason, with little success. She explains the plan to raise Malivoire and bring back all the monsters. MG is horrified and says the Necromancer is just using her. She knows, but wants revenge and doesn’t have a lot of options. If she walks away she’ll be dead. Alyssa cuts MG’s hand and explains she needs the blood of a vampire and goes to work on the Triad spell.

Ric gathers a bunch of the older Salvatore students. There are monsters on the loose inside and the Necromancer is planning to kill the Mystic Falls High students. Alaric wants them to band together and help X-men style. Jed (Ben Levin), Kaleb (Chris Lee), Hope, Lizzie (Jenny Boyd), Landon and a bunch of other kids we haven’t met say they’re all in.

MG’s day doesn’t improve, unfortunately. Alyssa says that with every monster raised from the dead MG will get weaker. Eventually, MG will die, but Alyssa promises that the Necromancer will bring him back. They can be acolytes together and the spell will make MG love Alyssa. For obvious reasons MG doesn’t like this plan.

The gang arrives at the high school and Sheriff Mac is stressed. She tells Ric they all have to leave this is a hostage situation. But remember the compulsion that allows Mac to temporarily remember her knowledge of the supernatural during life or death emergencies? It kicks in for this situation. Ric apologizes but promises to help. Mac isn’t convinced a bunch of kids can help. But Ric says that they’re all special. He then tells Mac to evacuate the town ASAP.

Landon and Hope are taking a shortcut in the basement up into the school. Hope is grateful for the short cut, but wants Landon to stay behind. She doesn’t think he’s weak. He just can’t rise from the ashes anymore. Landon understands, but there’s a hiccup. There’s a barrier spell: no supernaturals allowed. Although, Landon can go in and get the dark object. Hope doesn’t like it, but tells him to be careful.

Lizzie asks a big favor of Josie. If they’re gonna face Alyssa, Josie needs her magic back. Josie just doesn’t trust herself. She brings up what she did to Ethan as an example of why. Lizzie says saving him from the monsters would be a good way to atone. Also, she’s really worried about MG. She’s starting to see him as more than a friend.

Alyssa is trying to coax MG into playing chess with her. But MG is kind of miffed about the plan to kill and enthrall him. He attempts to reason with her by bringing up her parents. She incinerated her mother and father. He guesses that Alyssa’s parents saw the worst in her and rejected her. Alyssa says that’s not the truth. So, MG asks her what really happened. Alyssa’s parents were loving and just wanted what was best for her, magic or no magic. They saw the best in her. Unfortunately, she lost control and they died. She says it’s unfair that MG’s bad parents are alive and her good ones died. He implores her to prove her parents right. Before she gets a chance to respond Josie knocks Alyssa out with a spell.

Landon stumbles into a classroom and comes face to face with the Necromancer. The Necromancer tells Landon about his plan to raise Malivoire and make Malivore serve him, but Landon says that’s petty and stupid. The Necromancer is annoyed that everyone seems to think that. But he’s still going to move forward. Landon finds himself having a very awkward family reunion with his father (Douglas Tait).

The Necromancer wants to grant Malivore one final act of free-will: ending Landon however he sees fit. Once the Necromancer is gone, Malivore starts to consume him. But Landon proposes an alternative. He says he’ll help him get revenge on the Necromancer.

MG is relieved to see the twins, but knocking out Alyssa didn’t stop the spell. MG thanks them for the assist, but they need Alyssa’s help. He tells the girls to wake her up. Lizzie doesn’t trust her yet MG really wants to give Alyssa a chance to do the right thing.

Landon is pleading his case with his father. He points out that the Necromancer said to end him as he sees fit. That gives a lot of wiggle room. Malivoire created him to be a vessel. He doesn’t have to kill Landon. If he wanted to he could use him to get rid of the Necromancer once and for all.

Alaric finds himself facing off with the sphinx (Babak Tafti). The sphinx calls him a fool and says he’s foreseen the way Alaric dies. That might not bode well. However, Alaric is unimpressed. The conversation is cut short when Mac saves him by shooting the creature and he turns to sand.

At school, the students are being evacuated and Hope runs into Ethan. He says Landon let them out and was headed to the football field. The Necromancer is killing teachers on the football field. He’s using their blood to make a symbol and chanting, but it interrupted. He’s annoyed that Landon isn’t dead when he calls out to him. But, Landon says he isn’t Landon. He’s currently possessed by Malivore. The Necromancer looks a little afraid when he hears that and offers to make a deal. Malivoire pauses.

In the parking lot Jed and Kaleb are competing over who killed the most zombies. Alaric wants the bickering and is ready to call the mission a success. But then the monsters they’re killed glow bright white. This probably doesn’t bode well.

On the football field Malivore!Landon doesn’t want to make a deal. He just wants to kill the Necromancer. The Necromancer gives him points for decisiveness. He’s going in for the kill when he’s distracted by the sounds of flapping wings. The dragon is back and it barbeques Landon’s body. When Hope comes onto the field all she finds are ashes. The Necromancer taunts Hope about Landon’s untimely demise, which makes Hope’s eyes turn raging werewolf yellow.

Mac tells Alaric that Landon and Hope are missing. The Necromancer continues taunting Hope, but she reminds him that every dragon has a soft spot. The Necromancer reminds her he’s not killable. But Hope beheads him and reminds him she can put his head in some very unpleasant places. Just when she’s least expecting it, she turns around and finds a very alive Landon.

At first Alaric is getting a little worried, but then he proposes an alternate theory. If Landon and Hope aren’t in the school or on the field they must be in the prison world. Speaking of that, the Necromancer’s head is confused. But Hope figures out that Alyssa must’ve linked the spells to the ascendant that sent them to the prison world as opposed to an actual death. Now he regrets trusting Alyssa Chang. So, how are they getting home? Hope has an idea to get out of the prison world. Landon kicks the Necromancer’s head across the field and says he trusts her.

MG, Alyssa, Josie and Lizzie share an uneasy moment. They did in fact link the spells to the ascendant. MG wants to have a group hug, but he’s the only one on board. Josie apologizes for killing Alyssa and they get her to agree to come back to school.

Hope has a plan – jumping through the pit in the prison world to get back to the real world. They’re both a little unsure, but it could take forever for someone else to free them. Hope’s blood is poison to Malivoire, so the pit will regurgitate them both. They jump into the pit together. And in the forest, once the Necromancer’s head is reattached. he comes face to face with Malivoire. A Malivore who isn’t tied to him anymore. He runs and the monster chases after him.

Landon and Hope make it to the other side and for some reason Landon still remembers Hope. They’re mostly relieved, but worried no one else will remember them. Before they deal with their problems they share a dance. While they dance they talk about the anniversary they wanted vs what they ended up getting. They kiss and then they decide to have sex for the first time.

Alaric and Mac share a celebratory drink. She’s still taking the supernatural world in stride and assumes she’ll be made to forget it.  But Alaric thinks she needs to remember if she wants to. He needs an ally and even if she dumps him he doesn’t want to take her choices away.

The kids have a celebratory party. Kaleb raps about all the time monsters tried to kill them. Inside MG and Alyssa talk about what happened. Alyssa thanks MG for salvaging what’s left of her reputation. MG feels like he needs to give Alyssa a romantic chance, like he wanted Lizzie, too. Alyssa says she’s always seen him and they share a kiss just as Lizzie walks in.

Lizzie is heartbroken and goes to tell Josie what happened. She feels like she missed her chance and waited too long. Josie understands and she’s got some things to tell Lizzie. She put her magic away again and she wants to transfer to Mystic Falls High. Josie thinks she needs to be a normal teenager for a little while. Lizzie supports her decision.

Landon and Hope snuggle post-coitis. They both feel like it was pretty great as far as first times go. Hope admits she’s really happy and she’s glad they didn’t give up on each other. Unfortunately, Landon starts vomiting black goo. He keeps vomiting until he dissolves completely leaving Hope horrified.
