The episode opens with Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) sneaking out of bed. After what Wade said a suspicious Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) follows after him. But he’s not trying to raise the dead, he’s just weight-lifting with Jed (Ben Levin). Hope is pleasantly surprised at the innocuous scene, but is still a little curious. Weight lifting wasn’t previously Landon’s thing. Landon explains that since returning from Malivore he’s been having trouble sleeping, he needed an outlet. With that said, Jed and Landon go for a midnight run. At first Hope seems pacified, but then she checks the weights and their three hundred pounds. Even with phoenix powers Landon didn’t have super strength.

Josie (Kaylee Bryant) gets a letter from Lizzie (Josie Boyd) who is apologizing. She tells her the truth about Finch (Courtney Bandeko) and says in order to confront some of her control issues she’s going off to a wiccan wellness retreat. Josie goes to talk to her father about it. Alaric (Matt Davis) says he wishes Lizzie had come clean with her face to face, but he thinks the retreat’s a good idea. In the meantime, Josie volunteers to provide some supernatural assistance so that Ric can learn more about Pandora’s box.

Elsewhere, at a funeral home, The Necromancer (Ben Geurens) is comforting a widow, except he’s in his human form. No mutilated face, no robes and he’s going by “Ted.” As the widow is hitting on Ted they both get a shock as Alaric, armed with a crossbow, and Josie burst in. At the school in the kitchen Hope makes Landon a burrito and he doesn’t get sick. This is a problem because Landon is allergic to avocados, which the burrito was full of. His lack of hives tells Hope that this Landon cannot be the real Landon Kirby. She casts a sleeping spell.

Hope goes looking for Lizzie for help, but she finds Cleo (Omono Okojie). Cleo tells her the Saltzmans have left the building, but offers her assistance. At first Hope declines, but then decides to take Cleo up on her offer.

Ethan (Leo Howard) is feeling better but is still a little sore after the massive beating he took. But he knows he’s not as sore as he should be. He asks MG (Quincy Fouse) how he’s healed so fast and MG tells him more of the truth. He admits that he’s not the only vampire in Mystic Falls and explains that he gave him vampire blood which has healing properties.

When Josie and Alaric confront Ted he insists that he’s just a normal human. And he thinks Josie and Alaric are disturbed. He woke up near the funeral home with no memories and found that he was a good fit for the funeral director position. He’s just a man doing a job not many people are willing to do. Alaric doesn’t believe him and hands him a grenade and leaves Josie to take it from there.

Ted is trying to raise the dead. He’s using the Necromancer’s incantation, but it’s not working. Josie thinks it’s because his heart’s not really in it, probably because he doesn’t believe in any of this. Since there’s no rising happening Josie and Ted have a heart-to-heart. Josie gives them a rundown of their past together and admits that standing up to him feels like growth. And she admits that due to her romantic troubles, dealing with supernatural problems is preferable. Ted tells Josie to tell Finch how she feels. He says everyday he sees people regret not being honest with the people they loved. Finch is still alive. This lovely advice is interrupted by the body coming back to life. In his horror Ted drops the grenade and Alaric throws it into the coffin. Josie protects the three of them with a shield spell.

Hope and Cleo trap Landon in the Tree House with a boundary spell. Landon’s trying to plead his case, but Hope isn’t convinced he is who he says he is. Cleo seems convinced and tries to get Hope to call the whole thing off, but Hope says she doesn’t know Landon. She says they need to start with Landon’s blood. Landon agrees and offers to draw his own blood, but when he does it isn’t blood in the syringe it’s Malivore mud.

Ted doesn’t want to be the Necromancer again. He’s actually pretty happy with his human life and asks Josie and Alaric to respect his decision. Alaric says they can’t because he really needs to chat with Leonardo Di Vinci because he made Pandora’s Box. Ted explains from what they’ve said the Necromancer is pure evil and he has no desire to be that person again. Alaric says that people don’t change. Ted wants to try.

So far Landon is passing the truth orb’s test, but the problem is if the person holding the orb is saying what they believe is the truth it won’t glow red. There is another option. Hope’s blood is toxic to Landon, so if she injects it into Landon they’ll know if it’s the real him. Cleo thinks it’s a bad idea. However, Landon agrees and part of his arm starts melting when he drops her blood onto it.

After getting a crash course in the supernatural, Ethan decides he wants to be a vampire.  MG says no way. Ethan doesn’t understand why since if he was a vampire he’d be stronger and faster and could help a lot of people. He could even help with the Salvatore School’s enrollment woes. But MG tries to explain that being a vampire isn’t about what you gain, it’s about what you lose. He can’t turn Ethan. Ethan says okay and for a moment it looks like he’s dropped the subject. But Ethan points out that he still has MG’s blood in his system, so he doesn’t really need MG to agree. When MG tries to stop him Ethan shows him that when he wasn’t looking he got MG’s daylight ring, so MG’s trapped in their hideout until sundown.

Hope is still torn. She’s a little worried that Malivore might’ve followed through on making Landon his vessel. One or the other, she says she’s gotta figure out what’s going on with him. Hope asks Cleo to go get Alaric for help. Although, before she goes she tells Hope that she wishes her circumstances were different. Once she’s gone Landon wakes up and says he remembers everything and he’s not who she thinks he is. Hope tries to leave, but they’re sealed inside the treehouse.

Not!Landon and Hope circle each other. Hope reminds him that her blood can still kill him and if he kills her she’ll just get stronger. Not!Landon says he’s not Malivore and he’s sort of counting on the latter thing happening. Elsewhere, MG is feeling pretty guilty. He says that heroes are supposed to help people, not kill them. He says he doesn’t deserve a name or costume. He eyes the hoodie Ethan left behind and gets an idea.

Ted and Alaric talk about their current situation. Alaric says he needs to talk to Da Vinci’s ghost to protect his students. Ted feels genuinely bad about the things his former self did so he gives a peace offering. The peace offering is Leonardo Da Vinci’s ghost. The only problem is that he only speaks Italian. Neither Ted nor Alaric can speak Italian.

Hope and Not!Landon fight and Hope tries to get information. While cutting off a few limbs. Landon, who isn’t Landon, says the real Landon is dead and if she’d just accepted that they wouldn’t be hear. They continue to fight and Landon’s shirt is torn, revealing a word Hope carved into her sculpture on his shoulder. Malivore didn’t make him, she did.

Ethan is standing on a cliff and contemplating jumping, but he’s stopped by MG. MG covered by the hoodie is on fire and vamp speeds across the water up to Ethan. Alarmed Ethan tackles him, puts the fire out and gives him back his daylight ring. He and MG then hug because MG is seriously shaken after burning in the sunlight.

Alaric recruits Jed to try and translate, but his Italian is limited to food. As Jed is leaving after being dismissed, Cleo comes in and tells him about the urgent situation with Landon. He goes for his weapons and when his back is turned Cleo talks to Da Vinci’s ghost. Alaric is confused about how Cleo and Da Vinci know each other, but she’s not inclined to explain. She spells the axe away from Alaric and seals all three men inside Alaric’s office.

Hope figures out it was Cleo all along. Landon explains that it’s been a group effort. He is a combination of Hope’s sculpture, Cleo’s magic, and Landon’s remains. Not!Landon tries to appeal to Hope. He’s immortal and she could be too, if she activates her vampire side. She’d never have to worry about losing anyone ever again. Hope says hard pass and feeds him her blood and he melts.

Then, Hope comes face to face with Cleo who stabs her in the belly with the axe. A few fun facts, Cleo is the artifact. When Hope opened the box to make a wish Cleo was released. Cleo wants Hope to become a fully triggered Tribrid so that she can defeat Malivore and she can finally be free. It would’ve worked, Cleo said, if Hope hadn’t been so stubborn and would’ve let Landon go.  As Cleo goes in for the kill she’s stopped by the masked figure that’s been lurking around the school.

Alaric and Ted have another talk. Ted has been reading a grimoire and discovered a spell to dispel other spells…but it requires human sacrifice. Alaric thinks Ted is going to try and kill him and says he knew it was all an act. Ted surprises him by stabbing himself in the chest. Alaric holds him while he’s dying and tells him he’s sorry. Ted says he just wanted to make amends for the things he did in the past.

Later in the car Ethan apologizes to MG for what he did. He no longer wants to be a vampire and promises that moving forward he’ll be content being MG’s sidekick. MG; however, says that it’s not Ethan’s fault – it’s his. He should’ve listened to Alaric about compelling him, but he was so desperate for a friend. Ethan tries to assure MG that they are friends and not just because he wants to be a superhero. MG turns to Ethan and says they’re not. He’s compelling him. He tells Ethan that they’ve never been friends, that he should forget everything that’s happened between them these past few weeks and that he’ll never try hurting himself again. He tells Ethan to go to sleep and as he leaves mournfully he says Essential could’ve been Ethan’s superhero name.

Josie goes to Finch and declares her feelings for her. She says she doesn’t care that Finch is a werewolf and tells her she should give the Salvatore School a shot since being there could help her. Finch doesn’t entirely agree to change schools, but she does kiss Josie. So, Josie at least she’s willing to give a chance.

Alaric gets to the treehouse and Hope has the masked figure chained up. They warn the figure not to try anything, but it only takes Hope’s necklace with the Mikaelson family crest out of its pocket. The figure takes off the skull mask and it’s Landon.
