The episode opens with Alaric (Matt Davis) on the phone. He’s making plans to put Cleo (Omono Okojie) back in Pandora’s box. He’s interrupted by Kaleb (Chris Lee). At first he’s expecting Kaleb to fight him on because he and Cleo bonded, but he says instead that he gets it. Cleo made a fake Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) and tried to kill Hope (Danielle Rose Russell). Yet he’d still like to talk to her and get her side of the story before Alaric puts her on ice indefinitely. Alaric agrees.

Hope finds Landon and starts to notice he’s a bit shell-shocked and very attached to his weapons now. Hope is very much trying to go back to the way things were before, but Landon has changed. Landon is not ready to be around people, but Hope’s a little nervous about letting him out of her sight. Those two things aren’t meshing very well.

In the dining hall Josie (Kaylee Bryant) and Finch (Courtney Bandeko) have an awkward breakfast. Josie is excited that Finch is here, but Finch reminds her that she agreed to breakfast and not to enroll. Josie tries to sell her and says the school was made for people like them. Finch corrects her and says the school was made for people like her and Lizzie.

Kaleb goes to Cleo asking for answers. After sharing his tragic backstory he’s feeling more than a little betrayed. She decides that showing him why she did what she did will be easier than explaining. So, she takes her inside her mind. They go to a memory of Cleo’s village in Nigeria a thousand years ago. We see Cleo as a little girl (Trinity Adebayo). She’s playing until her grandmother (Sope Aluko) comes to get her. Cleo’s grandma tells her the story of a monster who lived in the woods. One day the monster came to the village and the villagers made a deal with it in exchange for safety. Cleo doesn’t understand what this has to do with them now.

In the present day Hope and Landon go to Mystic Falls High to pick up Pandora’s box. Landon waits outside because in the prison world a hallucination where he was rescued was inflicted upon him. While waiting a former bully named Dennis (Christian Magby) asks him if he missed being stuffed into lockers.

Cleo’s grandmother has made a deal with the monster. She’ll go with it because she’s a muse like Cleo and their family and friends will be safe. Cleo tries to stop her from leaving, but her grandmother says this is what must happen. Her grandmother leaves and Cleo cries. Cleo then comes up with an idea and runs out to the village. The monster her grandmother made the deal with was Malivore. Cleo offers herself to Malivore in her grandmother’s place.

In the next scene we see that Landon has snapped. He’s beating Dennis and shows no signs of stopping. Hope comes on the scene and is horrified. Seeing Dennis’s blood on Landon she asks him what’s wrong with him.

Kaleb tries to appeal to Alaric on Cleo’s behalf. He says Alaric has it all wrong. Cleo is a hero according to Kaleb since she sacrificed herself for her grandmother. Alaric thinks she might be manipulating him, but Kaleb believes her. He says that Kaleb is too close to Cleo to think objectively about her. Kaleb says the same about Alaric considering his history of sending teenagers to prison worlds. Alaric says that’s unfair, but they do need an unbiased third party to decide Cleo’s fate.

Josie introduces Finch to Jed (Ben Levin). She figures she could use some werewolf friends. Finch isn’t not a people person, so she wants to leave. But Ric interrupts because he needs Josie’s help. Finch is upset at being left alone, but Josie promises the other wolves are nice and she’ll be fast.

Hope is worried about Landon. She finally asks him what happened. Landon said that after they had sex he woke up in the prison world. He was alone and had to learn how to fight and kill and had to fight monsters everyday. The portal she and the twins created was how he got out. Hope wants to know why he didn’t say something if he’d been back for weeks. Landon says it was because she seemed happy with the fake him.

Josie is the unbiased party who’s going to talk to Cleo. She sees the rest of Cleo’s story. As a muse Cleo can create things. That’s why the Necromancer wanted her, so she could make monsters for him to eat. By design he had a hunger that could never be satiated. So, she made monsters for years until she gave him the idea for the vessel. She hoped that the vessel would buy her freedom. Malivore wasn’t so reasonable, so she trapped him and ran.

After seeing Cleo’s story Josie goes to her father to plead Cleo’s case. Alaric feels like Cleo just manipulated Josie, but she points out that Alaric has a double standard in how he treats his students. She reminds him that she nearly killed MG (Quincy Fouse) and she actually killed Alyssa and played with black magic and he never even considered sending her away. According to Josie, Cleo was taken as a little girl so she deserves a second chance.

Landon and Hope are arguing about their relationship. Hope feels Landon should’ve revealed himself. Landon says he did what she did, kept quiet, because he wanted her to be happy. They’re interrupted by a monster who wants Pandora’s box. They join together to fight it.

Alaric goes to talk to Cleo. We learn that some of the monsters Cleo made, but some were sent by Malivore. He’s obsessed with obtaining a vessel and Cleo wants to kill him because she can’t be free with him walking around. She was involved with Da Vinci, so he made Pandora’s box for her. Alaric gives her a choice: she can stay if she wants, but no more trying to kill Hope.

Kaleb and Alaric talk and Kaleb is happy Alaric isn’t going to imprison Cleo, but he has to tell him that Cleo opted to leave and he thinks they’ve got to respect her choice. Elsewhere, Finch and Jed have a friendly wrestling match. They make plans for a rematch the next day. Josie is happy, but comes to apologize. Talking with Cleo reminded her that she does have a lot of privilege due to being the headmaster’s daughter. She tells Finch she doesn’t have to enroll if she doesn’t want to. Finch says she does want to attend and she and Josie officially become girlfriends.

Landon and Hope have a painful conversation. Landon says he’s changed and he has to leave. He’s the son of Malivore and Hope is Malivore’s kryptonite. They were made to destroy each other. There’s no happy ending for them he tells her. Landon wishes things could be different but they need to stay away from each other. He leaves Hope in tears knowing their relationship is over.

Cleo is waiting at the bus station and is surprised to see Landon. Cleo is expecting for Landon to be angry, but he’s surprisingly understanding. They’re both headed out of Mystic Falls. Cleo says she’s going to go find another way to kill Malivore. Landon asks her if she’d like a hand.
