Legacies – That’s Nothing I Had to Remember
By: Atiya Irvin-Mitchell
The episode starts in The Big Easy (New Orleans) with Josie (Kaylee Bryant). She’s hunting for none other than Freya Mikaelson (Riley Voelkel). For those who didn’t watch “The Originals,” Freya is a powerful witch and Hope’s (Daniellle Rose Russell) aunt. Josie ventured to Crescent City because she needs Freya’s help with a complicated spell, but Freya tells her that maybe she should get a teacher’s help. Josie says it’s on the ancient black magic side so none of her teacher’s would be willing. Freya tries to tell Josie that school kids shouldn’t be playing with those kinds of spells, but Josie is undeterred. As Freya is about to leave Josie brings up that Freya’s forgotten someone, without the detail that it’s Hope.
Back at school we see Kaleb (Chris Lee) and his sister Kym (Ebboney Wilson). It’s Commonwealth Day, which means family and friends are visiting. Kim wants to see some magic, but Kaleb seems to just want his sister out of his hair and says there’s nothing to see. So, of course then a zombie Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) and MG (Quincy Fouse) are fighting and burst through the door. Lizzie magically sets it on fire, but then MG reminds her that they might be able to keep another monster from coming to prevent another Malivore monster. They lock it up instead. Kym is intrigued.
In the square Commonwealth Day in full swing and Alaric (Matt Davis) is apologizing to Sheriff Mac (Bianca Kajlich) for standing her up when she gets a call. Ethan (Leo Howard) and Hope are flirting and get shamed by nosy Councilman Roberts (Paden Fallis).
Then, Lizzie calls for an emergency meeting with Hope under a picnic table. She scolds Hope for not keeping on top of the Malivore portal enough as a zombie snuck on campus. She also encourages Hope to ask out Ethan, so she doesn’t have to worry about Josie getting heartbroken. In that vein she wants to hang out with Hope, which is confusing to Hope. However, Lizzie is just avoiding Josie. She’s apparently not great at keeping secrets. Good thing the girl in question is in New Orleans!
Hope agrees to hang out with Lizzie, which confuses Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) and Landon (Aria Shahghasemi). When they see the girls hanging out Raf gets scared. He’s crushing on Hope and is worried Lizzie’ll tell Hope about their brief gym floor affair last year. Landon promises to be Raf’s wingman.
In NOLA Freya is spelling out the spell work to Josie. She warns Josie that her convictions need to be clear while doing the spell or she’ll ensure the memories everyone forgot are gone for good. On a lighter note, Freya and her wife Keelin have a son and his name is Nik.
While Freya takes a phonecall, Josie looks at a wall of photos. Among them is a picture of Freya and Hope. Freya sees the way she’s eyeing the photo and demands to know who the girl is and well as Josie’s intentions. As opposed to telling her Josie magically knocks out Freya and leaves.
Remember Sebastian (Thomas Doherty)? He’s following a girl in a cloak and dress through the woods. He’s about to go in for the kill and she it turns out to be Kym! She surprises him by spraying him with vervain. Then, Kaleb and MG vamp speed on the scene. They admonish him for feeding on Wayne and Kaleb snaps his neck.
Kym, still eager for more supernatural fun, is annoyed and Kaleb tells her that she’s going home. Kym is pretty insistent that she’s not going anywhere. MG leaves leaves the sibling fight to stash Sebastian’s body and then Kym and Kaleb leave him with some advice: tell Lizzie that Sebastian is not a hallucination.
The annoying councilman from earlier gets his throat ripped out by a monster dressed like a puritan. Lizzie and Josie stumble on what’s left of the body and a word written on the wall of the alley: Croatoan. Who remembers the story of the lost colony of Roanoke from 5th grade? Long story short, there was a colony that disappeared, but the only thing left was the word carved on a tree: “Croatoan.”
Lizzie, Hope, Kaleb, Landon, Kim and Raf convene a squad meeting about the latest threat. It’s decided that Lizzie will guard Landon while Hope hunts the monster and everyone else goes to do research stuff. Lizzie and Hope decline to mention that Hope was in Malivore and they all knew her before.
Speaking of that, an upset Josie calls Caroline (Candice King) for some much needed mom advice. She explains about Landon, Malivore, and the memories and that she doesn’t know what to do.
Rafael and Hope walk through the woods and discuss Rafael’s transition from wolf to human. Rafael explains he feels like he knows Hope already (if only he knew how right he is) and sort of tells her he is in like with her.
Inside Lizzie puts a boundary spell around Landon. Landon asks her about Hope, for Rafael, and Lizzie is tempted to tell him the truth. Instead, she asks him about Star Wars. He’s got strong feelings about Ewoks. Then, the monster (Cheetah Platt) comes, but it’s going after Lizzie and not Landon.
MG’s reading and Kim’s intrigued by the super speed. She remarks that being a vampire seems pretty sweet. This will likely become an issue later. MG assures her that it has its downsides. On the research front the audience learns Croatoans can be summoned by powerful witches and liars are their favorite food. Or just people keeping big secrets.
Sebastian wakes up and tells MG and Kym that the witch who summoned the monster was called Cassandra. They were involved. Another long story short is Sebastian lived in Roanoke and was courting Cassandra, but he was also snacking on settlers. Cassandra didn’t know that and summoned the monster to get to the bottom of who was feeding on the townspeople. As he’s relaying this info to Lizzie over the phone he has to report he still doesn’t know how to kill it.
Sheriff Mac summons Ric to a crime scene. There are two dead bodies and Ric tells the sheriff that it’s for the best that the report say the incident is an animal attack. Sheriff Mac is not having it and brings him in for questioning. Sigh.
Landon and Lizzie run from the Croatoan to where the zombie is being held. Landon has an idea, let the monsters fight it out or tell the truth. Lizzie chooses the former, but the monsters won’t fight. Under duress Lizzie decides to fess up only to be magically silenced by Hope. Landon wants the truth. Hope is not giving anything away and now there’s a zombie on the loose.
Sheriff Mac questions Ric about being at the bar before the murders and picks up on him telling half truths. Between the dead romantic partners and the police reports, she’s having trouble believing Ric’s innocence. In fairness, without an understanding of the supernatural Ric’s life seems pretty sketchy. Mac says she needs an alibi or Alaric is going to need a lawyer. Instead, he plays the now Mayor Matt Donavon card.
Hope is upset that Lizzie was going to tell Landon everything. Lizzie says that things change and that he and Josie didn’t have sex. The monster interrupts by coming for them. Hope has the idea to start spilling secrets and they share the little ones: Hope stole Lizzie’s butterfly clip, Lizzie killed Hope’s hamster, Hope had a crush on Josie and Lizzie thinks she’s cool.
They realize they have to tell the big secret – that Hope’s back. Josie is back, too. She walks into the gym and blasts everyone with a spell. Everyone connected to Hope passes out and gets their memories of Hope Mikaelson back. And the monster is going for Landon!
Also, Sebastian remembers how to kill the monster – there’s a token. Additionally, apparently Cassandra summoned the monster to protect Sebastian and desiccated him to keep him safe, but the monster killed her. He gives MG the token to protect Lizzie.
The Croatoan is dragging Landon back to Malivore when Hope steps in and Landon is mad. How could Hope not tell him? Hope explains he was happier without her. That’s not good enough for Landon. Not for nothing, but this spat is happening while the monster is still attacking. Luckily, MG shows up to give Hope the token to defeat the monster. But a lot is left unresolved. Landon walks away from Hope.
Good news: Matt vouches for Ric. Bad news: Ric needs a sheriff who will look the other way when he uses less than legal methods to deal with supernatural problems. Mac is not that kind of sheriff, so he gets Kaleb to compel her.
Lizzie and Josie have a heart to heart. Josie is upset that Lizzie kept Hope a secret. Lizzie explains she just wanted to protect her and gently points out Josie lied about going to New Orleans. Josie then explains that Caroline told her that everyone deserves the truth to make their own choices, but she’s worried Landon won’t choose her. She and Lizzie promise no more secrets. Speaking of that, MG brings Sebastian by to show Lizzie that he is very real.
At the Commonwealth Day festivities Raf and Hope have a sad talk. Rafael says he had feelings for Hope before and after he forgot her, which is why he needs to keep his distance from now on because of Landon.
Josie and Landon talk by the lake. Josie admits a part of her didn’t want to give the Malivore memories back, but she knew she had to because Hope has a family. She apologizes for being selfish, but Landon reassures her she’s the least selfish person he knows. Unfortunately, he doesn’t know what remembering Hope means.
Speaking of Hope, having had a pretty rough day she’s in the town square watching the families interact and crying. But then she hears someone call her name and turns around to see none other than her Aunt Freya! She runs into her arms and cries.
