Legacies – You Remind Me of Someone I Used to Know
By: Atiya Irvin-Mitchell
We open up with a group of boys. Two are nameless and two called Ethan and Dennis. They’re going to vandalize the Old Mill, or at least that’s what Dennis (Christian Magby) wants. The group are on the football and as the new quarterback Ethan (Leo Howard) says the vandalism is kinda juvenile. Dennis the menace disagrees. The boys have a standoff about it until Ethan decides to leave with the other boys in toe. Dennis seems committed to defacing the Old Mill and stays behind, that is until a very large wolf-like creature snatches him.
We zoom in on Mystic Falls High School and Hope (Danielle Rose Russell). She’s lamenting how much it sucks that the love of her life Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) forgot her. And she’s observing that the school has been TP’d when the new sheriff greats her. She briefly questions how about what happened to the school, only to be interrupted by Maya (Bianca Santos) and Ethan who insist Hope’s innocent because she’s a Timberwolf not a Stallion. In case it’s not clear, the sheriff is their mom, but she’s not there for the PTA as she needs to speak with Alaric (Matt Davis).
In the principal’s office the sheriff explains that a boy named Dennis has been reported missing. Being new to the school Ric admits he’s not familiar yet, but he promises to keep an eye out. She leaves and a cloaked Hope says he thinks the new sheriff’s into Ric. Ric brushes the comment off and informs Hope that he thinks there’s a new monster in town. They need a way in, but they’re in luck since it’s time for the annual Mystic Falls High vs. Salvatore School football game.
Speaking of that, Headmaster Vardemus (Alexis Denisof) is giving the kids a rousing peptalk pre-game and hands down a decree. Ric’s no powers rule for the game are no more. He tells the kids anything goes. Kaleb (Chris Lee), Josie (Kaylee Bryant) and MG (Quincy Fouse) are psyched. Landon is just nervous because Vardemus deputizes him as a Quarterback. This should be interesting.
MG goes to Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) as he is worried about this because Landon is not known for being super coordinated. But Lizzie’s mind is elsewhere. She’s focused on finding Sebastian (Thomas Doherty), but worried he could be another monster of the week. MG offers to help, but only if she agrees to play ball.
Landon is freaking out and Josie reassures him. She also casts a spell to help him throw better as foster care didn’t have a football team. The Stallions arrive and Hope is playing ball. She and Landon share a look, which makes Josie jealous. Landon explains he and Hope just shared a milkshake, but this doesn’t comfort her.
Good news! Dorian found Dennis alive. The bad news is the creature that snatched him scared him so badly that he can’t be calmed without compulsion. Long story short, the creature almost kills him. He describes a wolf-like creature, which Dorian identifies as a Chanka – a creature that only eats werewolves.
When Ric reports back to Hope she says they’re lucky it’s not a full moon, but wait! Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) has been in wolf-form all summer. Hope had no idea he used the ring she gave him and wants to go find him immediately. Meaning she’s gotta get out of the game fast.
Speaking of the game the Stallions are using their powers and winning. Ric’s taking notice that The Stallions are cheating. And Lizzie and MG are trying to figure out if Sebastian’s a monster.
The Timberwolves huddle up and deputize Hope to be the QB. On the other side of the field Josie orders Landon to blitz her. She gets blitzed, but manages to score. She limps off by pretending to have sprained her ankle and Landon feels guilty.
Instead of going to the nurse we see Hope venture to Raf and Landon’s old room. Unbeknownst to her Landon follows her and catches her doing a locator spell. He tries to run away, but Hope freezes him. While he’s frozen she explains about the monster and Rafael. She doesn’t share about their history. She just says as a member of the Crescent pack he can turn Rafael human again. Landon insists he’s going with her.
The Stallions are having a huddle up and Josie is super determined to win. Kaleb is too, but in a different way. He says they should ease off their powers in the second half since there’s no need to rub it in. Josie disagrees and Lizzie’s just not engaged. Kaleb pointedly tells Josie that Ric was right about how this game should be played. He was right about a lot of things. There’s a story there about the vote most likely.
The others head back to the game and Ric wants a word with Vardemus. He calls him out on letting the kids use their powers to cheat and Vardemus shames him for “stifling” them. It seems that we have a rivalry.
On the other side of the field The Stallions are bummed, but Ethan steps in and decides he’s going to play and lead them to victory. He ups the Timberwolves score, but maybe a bit too much. Josie gets frustrated. Lizzie sees Sebastian and leaves the game. Vardemus “helps” in the worst way possible by giving Josie a spell, which she uses and completely shatters poor Ethan’s arm. That ends the game.
In the forest Landon and Hope are closing in on Raf. Landon shares with Hope that he’s worried about Landon forgetting about him. Hope tries to comfort him, but is interrupted by a scream which Landon runs towards. Unfortunately, it was a fake-out. The monster can mimic human cries to lure its prey.
Hope tells a confused Landon to turn around because she’s gonna get naked. She half-heartedly explains that she’s also a werewolf and then transforms and leads the monster away from Landon.
After a chase Hope shifts back into human form and finds Rafael. She apologizes to Raf and tells him that she never would’ve left him stuck like this if she had known. Wolf Rafael is keeping his distance from Hope, but then she says the magic words: Landon.
Back on the field things are tense. Ric demands to know what kind of spell Vardemus gave Josie. Vardemus says it’s not his or Josie’s fault that humans are so fragile. Alaric admonishes him for giving his daughter a dark spell. Vardemus bans Ric from the campus and says the kids (Josie and Lizzie included) are safer without him around. Ric punches him and the kids start fighting each other; meaning for the second year the game ends in a brawl.
On a lighter note, Lizzie finds Sebastian. Sebastian tells Lizzie she bewitches him, but she should steer clear because he’s a monster. Reflecting on the past year, Lizzie asks what kind of monster. Sebastian says he’s a vampire, which Lizzie says is fine. Some of her best friends are vampires and they share a kiss. Or do they? MG catches up and from his perspective Lizzie is making out with thin air. What’s happening here?
Elsewhere, Landon is sprinting through the forest. The monster seems to want him now. It throws Hope into a tree and goes for Landon who is saved by Rafael in human-form. The boys share an emotional reunion and Landon jams an arrow through the monster’s heart.
On a whole, the episode ends on a dark note. Ethan is pretty badly hurt and might lose his football scholarship. Josie’s bleeding black blood through her nose. Landon is worried the malivore monsters are back because of him. And Vardemus – he might not just be a witch. We’re given a scene of him in the forest where he bites into the corpse of creature.
