LIKA NOVA – Desprevenido
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) It is a sonic mixture between pop driven melodies and powerful harmonies that go along with synths, guitars, great drums and groovy basslines.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Nowadays we just tend to go with the flow. We’ve found a nice place to write songs without thinking directly on influences, but the ones that were relevant when we started this band were The 1975, Tame Impala, Muse, Aterciopelados and Soda Stereo among others.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Desprevenido.”
A) It is a song we wrote about that love that suddenly kicks you. You don’t see it coming and you are right there, helpless and not really sure if you’re ready to take it, but you just do.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) The flow and the lyrics.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The video is the live version of the song opening the concert for Imagine Dragons. ”Desprevenido” means ‘’unaware,’’ so we weren’t expecting this – to be in front of 24.000 people sharing our music. That’s really the meaning we were expecting to give to it.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) We usually write the lyrics after the music and the melodies are kinda ready. Of all the songs we have, maybe in two of them the lyrics and melody were created together.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) “Portales” and “Desprevenido” were 100% produced by us. David Useche is the one leading the majority of the process.
Q) Rumor has it that there is a third album in the works! What can you tease about some themes you’ll be exploring and maybe even a release date?
A) The album will be released at the beginning of 2024, but this year we will be releasing two or three singles that will be part of the record. We explored a lot when we first went to Mexico. We wrote songs with talented people and the places we visited certainly inspired us to look for new sounds and ideas.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) This is not a location in particular, but we loved playing in Lima, Perú. The people there just welcomed us with open arms and were one of the best crowds we’ve ever experienced.
Q) You recently got to open for Imagine Dragons in Bogota! What did that accomplishment mean to you as a band?
A) It’s like a trophy. It is something we will carry along our careers as a big accomplishment. But this is truly a massive motivation to keep pushing bigger things. It is not something we settle for.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) There are many artists that we would love to make music with. But being more realistic, we’d like to collaborate with Bandalos Chinos, Usted Señalemelo or Odisseo – all Latin American bands.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Right now I have two going on loop: CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST: by Tyler, The Creator and NEVER ENOUGH by Daniel Caesar. I found them to be amazing records, full of creativity and great lyrics. I also connect very well with this type of music, so I just vibe with it.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It is the main outlet we have to put out information and releases of our music. Without social media, the band will not be the same and wouldn’t have the same reach.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) We love you! Thank you for connecting with our music and making it part of your life. We promise to keep bringing songs that come straight from our hearts.
